Chapter 918: 004 Officially Visiting
Avery Graham wrapped herself in her clothes and slid into her slippers for a trip to the restroom, only to realize upon returning that this hotel suite truly had everything one could need.
"I’ll brew a pot of coffee, just give me a moment," Avery suggested to Bernard Taylor, who nodded without objection.
When he was abroad, he often stayed up late working overtime, relying on coffee to stay alert.
Avery headed to the kitchen to make coffee, which was fully equipped, though anything she used would need to be paid for. She checked the prices beforehand—quite expensive indeed.
"It’s okay, just go ahead and brew it. Use anything you need, and if it’s not enough, we can always call room service," Bernard said, leaning against the door frame, having noticed Avery’s hesitation.
"You said so yourself." With that reassurance from Bernard, Avery didn’t hold back and used whatever she needed.
Bernard did end up calling for room service, ordering some snacks and desserts.
As Avery finished brewing the coffee and was reflecting on how such delicious coffee deserved to be paired with equally delightful desserts, she saw that Bernard had already arranged a variety of tempting treats before him. Was he somehow a mind reader?
It was like he always knew what she was thinking and had everything prepared in advance.
Back when she had served as his nurse, even though Bernard often called her foolish, his colleagues would say that she was like a worm in Bernard’s stomach, intuitively knowing and preparing whatever he wanted.
At that time, she considered it just professional sensitivity, but now she couldn’t simply attribute Bernard’s understanding of her to work instincts alone.
"Try it, the coffee beans may not compare to those in my shop and are pricier, but they’re still of high quality and incomparable to instant coffee," Avery offered as she poured a cup for Bernard.
Bernard stirred it a couple of times with a spoon, took a sip, and found the coffee very well made, smooth, and melting upon entry.
"It tastes much better than what my secretary makes," Bernard complimented.
"How could I dare compare myself to your secretary," Avery replied modestly, raising her cup, "Well, in lieu of wine, let’s use coffee instead. Cheers to you and thank you for taking care of me tonight. Also, I wish you a smooth journey and a prosperous future tomorrow."
Avery wanted to add something about finding a beautiful wife, but then thought better of it and didn’t bring up the topic.
"Thank you," Bernard also raised his coffee cup and clinked it with hers.
Avery smiled sweetly, her cheeks still flushed with the residual effects of the alcohol, her face glowing alluringly under the light. Bernard discreetly averted his gaze.
That night, the two of them chatted about everything under the sun, and Avery ended up brewing three pots of coffee.
At dawn, Avery saw Bernard off to the airport and watched him board the plane before heading back to her place. Giselle Browman hadn’t returned home yet, so she changed clothes and hurried to her shop.
She distributed the Spring Festival bonuses and gifts and posted the holiday notice—business would resume on the eighth day of the new year.
Since Avery hadn’t arranged the New Year’s Eve dinner in time, she gave an extra five hundred money in each red envelope, and the staff were delighted with their gifts.
After finishing these tasks, Avery left early.
She called Michael Auclair as she left the Cake Shop, but his phone was still off. Without overthinking it, she went for a stroll in the mall by herself, knowing she would be bringing Michael back to meet her relatives during Spring Festival and they would definitely be driving to her old house.
The journey from G City to her old house was several hours’ drive, and with many family members to consider, there was a lot to prepare. Although it was Michael’s first visit and traditionally he should handle the preparations, Avery worried that his efforts might not suffice and her mother might find it embarrassing. She had wanted to discuss it over the phone with him, but now she decided to just handle the shopping herself.
The shopping list for the elders mainly included high-end packaged health products, teas, and wellness items; for the slightly older elders, typically cigarettes and wine for the men, and cosmetics and chocolates for the women; and for the children, lots of snacks like the "Wang Wang" gift packs. Soon, Avery’s hands were full, unable to carry any more.
Luckily, she had driven there, and the mall had carts, so she could push her purchases directly to the parking lot downstairs. This shopping spree had quickly added up to over ten thousand in expenses.
