Chapter 903: 001 Long time no see
Forget it, there wasn’t much impact on her, and she didn’t want to argue with the woman anyway.
"Fine, 18,000 USD, do you want to transfer it or pay in cash?" The woman didn’t bother being polite with Avery Graham either.
The cola stain could actually be washed off at the dry cleaner’s, and a cleaning would only cost a little over 100 USD. The coat wasn’t as expensive as she claimed; she just wanted to vent her dissatisfaction on Avery by extorting some money from her, considering it a way to soothe her own resentment.
She didn’t think that Avery would willingly pay the 18,000 USD anyway, so maybe they could have a fight, and she could scold her. That way, she’d get to release her anger.
"Are you certain your coat is worth that much?" Avery wasn’t a fool; she wasn’t just going to hand over whatever was asked. Since she found herself in this situation, it was right to compensate, but there was no reason to be extorted like a simpleton.
Being extorted was one thing, but being played with was something she wouldn’t accept.
"What? You think it’s not worth that much? Let me tell you, a poor girl like you that has no money, have you ever seen luxury goods? For this coat, I’m not asking you for 100,000 or 80,000 USD, because I know you don’t have that kind of money. 18,000 is the absolute minimum; otherwise, this matter won’t be considered settled," the woman said while looking at Avery with disdain, clearly not taking her seriously.
She had seen many women who didn’t recognize value, easily deceived by a little persuasion, convinced that they couldn’t afford the luxury items she was familiar with.
"Not settled? So, lady, are you planning to sue me? Alright then, I’ll see it through with you. I don’t have 18,000, but I do have 1,800. Take it or leave it," Avery wasn’t someone who could be easily bullied. She had been conciliatory before because she felt at fault, but now, with the woman bullying her, there was no reason for her to continue swallowing her pride.
"By the way, I’m Avery Graham, here’s my phone number. Think it over and call me," Avery, thinking of something, put down her cola, took out a sticky note from her pocket, wrote her phone number on it, and handed it to the woman.
The woman didn’t accept it but instead grabbed Avery’s collar and said imperiously, "Let’s get this straight now, you’re not leaving until things are clear."
The woman was already taller than Avery, so Avery looked somewhat like a little chick being held up by her.
Bernard Taylor came out of the restroom, ready to settle the bill, when he saw what was happening. His mother had set him up with a blind date, and he had agreed to meet her for a lunch. He didn’t feel good about the lady, so he had been quite aloof throughout the meal. However, the lady seemed rather interested in him.
He didn’t expect that she would suddenly get into a dispute with Avery.
He didn’t care to settle the bill and walked straight over to the struggling women, "What’s going on?"
Hearing Bernard’s voice, Avery was surprised; she hadn’t anticipated running into him here and that he would take an interest in the altercation involving her and another woman.
"Bernard Taylor, you’re just in time. This woman stained my clothes, and I asked for compensation, but she’s playing dirty tricks, trying to get away with giving me only 1,800 USD. Do you think this coat I’m wearing is only worth 1,800?" the woman said to Bernard, feeling superior. Her family was well-off, and it wouldn’t be a cheap coat worth just 1,800 USD.
Even if she would wear clothes that cost a thousand or so, on a date, she wouldn’t wear such cheap clothes. Of course, she hadn’t expected Bernard would take her to such an affordable restaurant for the meal.
Watching the office workers in black suits and uniforms coming to eat, she truly was unhappy.
She had been on many dates before, but it was the first time she’d been invited to a place like this. She accepted because it was Bernard Taylor, but a place like this had far too many low-class poor people like Avery.
"I guess I’ve offered too little, but I do not believe your coat is worth 18,000," Avery shot back, not willing to back down. So Bernard was her backup, huh?
But so what? She wasn’t afraid. Did they really think that having a man there would make such a difference?
Bernard, who had originally looked at Avery, turned his gaze back to the woman. The woman’s face turned slightly red, and when she spoke again, she lost her previous arrogance, "I just thought this woman’s tone was bad, so I asked for an extra 6,000 USD, just to teach her a lesson, nothing more."
As the Powell Family’s young lady, she didn’t need to extort money from anyone.
"I’ll take you shopping later; let’s go pay the bill now," Bernard said without further ado, not showing particular warmth towards Avery.
"Okay," Mona Cervantes said softly, nodding. It could be considered a blessing in disguise; Bernard had even offered to drive her home earlier.
As long as it wasn’t going straight home, even going shopping together would be nice.
"Let’s go then," Bernard nodded and took the lead.
Mona hurried to keep up with his pace, walked a couple of steps, turned to look at the somewhat astonished Avery, "Consider yourself lucky today. If I run into you again, you won’t be so fortunate. Avery Graham, isn’t that right?"
"..." Avery was speechless; she hadn’t done anything wrong. Besides, it wasn’t intentional in the first place. She thought only ill-mannered commoners would stoop so low, never expecting that even a seemingly noble lady would resort to such behavior.
Really, it’s not about class or status; it’s about whether one has quality or not.
Just what was the relationship between Bernard and this woman?
Just a moment ago, he had acted like he didn’t know her at all. Forget it. Anyway, she couldn’t afford to pay for the coat, and if someone else was willing to foot the bill, that was fine by her. She could save over 10,000 USD - that’s the size of a square meter of living space!
Being poor, she had to be cautious moving forward. Some people simply weren’t worth provoking.
