Chapter 186: Chapter – 165 - A Video Call With The Kings
Zachariah’s Point Of View
"My King, I bring you some unsettling news..." Jaymehsyn sighed, as he pushed open my office door.
If I could, I would have told him I didn’t want to hear any bad news. I honestly didn’t think I could handle it. The past 5 years were now a blur. Everything happened so fast, and the Kings and their Duhtchies were thriving.
Until around 3 years ago, when things started to get concerning. There was trouble brewing in every Duhtchy with a Mafia King ruling. And it wasn’t a coincidence.
At first, it started off slow. Some small complaints about their treatment in the Duhtchies, or some skirmishes in a hotel or casino.
But then, at the tail end of the 2nd year... Things had begun to escalate. Armed robbery was on the rise, Omega abuse and abductions were being reported, and all of that had fused into one major problem.
There were turf wars happening by some unknown gangs. Like some cheezy Mafia movie. The problem was that they never approached any of the Kings head on... They started with sections of their Duhtchy’s businesses and commercial districts.
"Sir? Are you listening?" Jaymehsyn said, pulling me from my thoughts.
I looked up from my desk and noticed that he was now seated in the chair across from me, a face full of concern.
"Sorry Jaymehsyn... I just can’t seem to get out of my head lately. What’s the unfortunate news? I must admit that I do not wish to hear it..." I sighed, gripping my skull.
I could no doubt feel a headache coming on...
"Haah... Well, I must also admit that I wished I wasn’t the one who had to relay such news. So, we’re even." He chuckled.
"Ugh... Now I want to hear it even less... Go on, before I lose my nerve..." I grumbled, massaging my temples.
"Well... It’s this..." He sighed, placing a tablet down atop my desk.
I slowly looked at the screen, and my eyes gradually began to bulge.
’Those detestable, ungrateful, power hungry, useless pieces of shit! How fucking dare they!’
This was a slap in the face.
’A DIRECT SLAP IN THE FACE TO ME!’
The job of a Monarch was not a small one by any means. Had my father not prepared me and his legacy so meticulously perfect, I would not have had the strength nor courage to do any of this.
The Duties of a Monarch were overwhelming. Monarchs were the caretakers of the Kings. As such, they are the ultimate overseers of each Duhtchy ruled by a King, as well as their own Duhtchy. They must at all times, ensure that life is not one riddled with strife.
They must ensure that the Kings are not ruling their Duhtchies by fear and oppression. They are the accountant of each Duhtchy, as well. They ensure that there are no discrepancies in their fundings, nor their profits.
All Duhtchies must stay in the green by the year’s end. Any negative annual profits will be investigated, thoroughly. The Monarch had the final say in the rules and laws passed in each Duhtchy with a King ruling.
Because to that end, the Monarch was the intermediary for the Government, and the Kings. As long as the laws in the Duhtchies didn’t affect the population at large and The Procreation Crisis,
they were pretty easy to get approved. However, this was not something that had been acquired easily. The previous Monarch, my father Ahrexander, had fought tooth and nail to secure this power. Wars had been waged, lives had been lost greatly– on both sides– and finally, a Blood Seal contract and Peace Treaty had been signed.
The way the government went about flexing their muscles and puffing out their chests now, was ominous.
’Did they find some kind of loophole in the contract? Did they find out about Lady Chastaine and Danhiel, and now they wanted revenge?’
Unfortunately, I had been very thorough with how we handled everything. But even if I hadn’t, the rules were null and void when I had been among the captured. Lady Chastaine had known exactly who I was, and done nothing about it.
"Jaymehsyn, we will host an emergency meeting. We’ll do it over a video call. The Kings are much too busy to come here personally. Also, Danhiel had found out about our last meeting effortlessly. We cannot risk that happening again." I said, standing up from my desk.
"We will begin in one hour. Please make the necessary arrangements, Jaymehsyn." I declared.
"At once, my King." He bowed dutifully, before making his hasty exit.
I slowly walked further into my office, towards a large, black Curio cabinet. Inside, were my father’s ashes and memorabilia. But at the far back, beyond the large picture of my father, lay a door.
I gently pushed it, and it opened with a soft, clink. Inside was a safe with all my important documents. After putting in the keycode, I removed the thick manilla envelope, and shut it all.
My job was to mediate, and protect the interests of the Kings.
’And I will not fail them now... This might turn into a war, but the least I can do is make sure we don’t strike back blindly...’
As I was sitting in my office chair reading over everything I had been taught, my door opened once again.
Jaymehsyn walked in, looking much more composed than before. I couldn’t help but smirk. He had always tried to carry himself with a certain air about him when dealing with the Kings, and it seemed that that wasn’t going to change anytime soon.
"My King, I have made all of the necessary preparations. They are ready for your words..." Jaymehsyn said, propping up a tablet onto my desk.
To my surprise, all of the Kings were already present and accounted for. Once again, I had found myself in awe of how reliable Jaymehsyn truly was.
"My fellow Kings, I appreciate that you were all able to attend this meeting." I said, trying to restrain my nerves.
This meeting would be the most challenging thus far, I owed it to them to ease their worries.
They all greeted me formally, each one looking sad and fearful of the ominous future ahead of us.
"I imagine you are all aware of the new Edicts that the Legislator Branch has enacted. Even if you haven’t seen the news yourselves, I have no doubt that Jaymehsyn informed you."
They all nodded seriously, and I began to process my next words. Until a soft, anxious voice broke the silence...
"I’m so sorry that my actions put you all in a tough position. I must admit... I never anticipated such a strong and straightforward attack. It seems that I was being a little too optimistic..." Tristan said, looking well and truly contrite.
"This is not your fault. We have done nothing wrong, and laws are being twisted in their favor." Lyukhe said sternly.
"But because of me... You guys will be–"
"Let me be clear about something Tristan. It is as Lyukhe says. This new attack is indeed a breach of the contract we have with the federal government. It was done intentionally, to get our attention. You are not at fault." I said, softening my tone to put him at ease.
He solemnly nodded his understanding, and sat back against Ferdinand’s chest. Ferdinand and Sylvester looked at him with worry filled gazes. It was heartbreaking to see, but it only steeled my resolve even more.
"As you are all aware, my job is to protect your interests. You also know that I have always taken that job very seriously. When you all came to free me from Lady Chastaine, no one had broken any laws. As such, what you may not know, is that as per a clause in our contract with the government... ’In the event of the Monarch’s capture; The Kings are allowed to retrieve them, as long as it occurs within a Mafia occupied Duhtchy. If it has occurred in a Duhtchy under direct government control, a petition must be submitted to the Judicials Branch’... You all know the details assisting the legality of our actions, I imagine." I paused, looking at each of my Kings.
"Looking over the documentation I have received from each of you annually– as well as quarterly– I can clearly identify a rise in conflict and hardships inside each of your Duhtchies..." I said, noticing the utter shock consuming their faces, which then morphed into blazing anger.
’It would appear that I will need to explain in further detail...’
