Chapter 185: Chapter – 164 - All Hell Breaking Loose
Xander’s Point Of View
"Hey, Xander. Did you see it?" Xavier asked, walking into our office and striding over to my desk.
He plopped down in the chair across from me, a grim look on his face.
"See what? What’s wrong?" I asked, confused.
"The new Edicts from the Legislator Branch. They’re damning as hell." He sighed.
I looked up from the documents I had been reading, bemused. I had been stuck behind my desk for the past week, barely able to sleep at all. Even though our Duhtchy wasn’t particularly struggling, there had been a strange increase in violence and theft in the past 3 years.
More and more businesses were petitioning for our protection, but at the current rate things were going, we wouldn’t have the manpower to spare. Xavier knew that I basically never left this office all week, so his question seemed more rhetorical than anything else.
"What are you talking about?" I asked, focusing on the paper in front of me once again.
Xavier snatched the document from my hands, and then placed his phone down on my desk in front of me. My eyes widened as I read the information in front of me. This was serious. The federal government had basically declared war on the Kings. It was unheard-of.
The government was getting ballsy, and the only reason I could think of for them to do this was...
"Tristan..." I mumbled.
"Yeah. Looks like they are going to try to take us all down to get to him. Which means one of two things: Either we weren’t careful enough after the Siege of Chastaine, or someone squealed." Xavier replied.
"Or both. This seems too brazen to happen on a what-if. There are many reasons why they’ve never confronted us before. A great number of Duhtchies would collapse without the Kings. They would need to find a suitable replacement, or we’ll have more Whastelahnd’s on our hands..."
It was strange that they had chosen this route. I couldn’t understand what they would stand to gain by taking on all of the Kings. It just didn’t make any sense.
"It’s strange, right? They’ve never been this bold before. Since we didn’t sign the contract, we don’t have much to worry about for our Duhtchy... But we won’t have a choice if we are ordered to protect Zach..." Xavier sighed.
"Yeah... We should definitely contact Zach and get his thoughts abou–"
My words were cut off as my phone began to ring. I pulled it out of my desk drawer and placed it atop my desk. I stared at the private number in confusion.
"What the fuck? Who the hell would call us privately?" Xavier said.
I shrugged my shoulders, but made no attempt to answer it. However, when my phone rang twice more, I hesitated. It was blatantly obvious that the call was not an accident. Xavier looked up at me, worried. I was starting to get an ominous feeling, and clutched my stomach.
Once the ringing stopped, I let out a slow, shaky breath.
’Nothing good could come from answering that call...’
Just as we started to relax, Xavier’s phone began to vibrate across my desk. We inadvertently stared at each other, Xavier swallowing audibly.
"I’m going to answer it." Xavier said, finally breaking the tense silence.
"Put it on speaker..." I nodded.
He agreed, and then answered the call slowly.
"Hello?" Xavier said, his voice deep and threatening.
–Hello. Is this, Xavier?
"Who wants to know?"
–My, my. You Mafia Kings sure are unwelcoming.
"Says the man calling from a private number?" Xavier said with a glare.
–Right, Right... My name is Shaihffer. May I have a moment of your time?
Xavier and I went stiff immediately. It wasn’t everyday that the Director of the Judicials Branch called you. In fact, this was the first time ever. It never bode well when they reached out to anyone.
"Never thought I’d see the day where I’d get a call from the Judicials Branch. Must be pretty serious..." Xavier drawled with a confidence I certainly didn’t have.
–Well... If I’m being honest, I attempted to call your brother first, but he didn’t pick up. He must be awfully busy...
The way he said that sounded completely as if he knew that we were together, and my ignoring was intentional.
"Well you got me now. How about we quit beating around the bush, and speak frankly. Contrary to your tone, we are both extremely busy at the moment."
–Of course.
He said with a chuckle. However, despite his words, a long silent pause ensued afterwards.
"I’m listening." Xavier said, dryly.
–Is it true that the Kings are spearheading their own Omega facilities?
"Excuse you?" Xavier said, tone darkening.
–We’ve gotten word that a good number of new facilities were popping up all over Delgahtowe. However, the owners and information pertaining to said facilities, is basically nonexistent.
"I’m sorry man. I’m not sure I understand what you’re talking about. Our Duhtchy has no such facilities, and I was not made aware of some major group planning." Xavier said nonchalantly.
–Oh? I’m sure I can jog your memory. Think back to when you and your fellow brethren attacked Lady Chastaine’s Estate. I’m sure you could connect the dots then.
I ground my molars, my anger boiling to its limits. I looked up at Xavier, and he wasn’t doing any better.
"Nope. Not ringing a single bell. I’m not sure what else you want me to say. However, I am curious about something..."
–... I’m not here to satiate your curiosity, boy.
"I just find it ironic– and not at all coincidental– That new laws have been passed, The government is going to war with its citizens, and the Director of the Judicials Branch is calling me and asking about these ’Privately Owned Omega Facilities’. Looks like the government has been busy..." Xavier sighed.
–Oh? Such accusation in your tone.
"Sir, I’ve told you what I know. If you don’t have anything else to talk about, I need to get going." Xavier said, reaching for his phone.
–Haha! Last question... How’s your Duhtchy doing boys? Dealing with violence and theft must be extremely tiring. Don’t hesitate to reach out. We’d be more than happy to assist. I’ll be in touch.
*Click*
Shaihffer chuckled as the call disconnected. My blood ran cold, and my anger spilled over. He had basically confirmed that he knew we were both listening, and that he had a hand in the strange influx of bullshit going on in our Duhtchy.
"What a bastard! Do you think he’s behind all of this?" Xavier asked, pointing to the stack of documents atop my desk.
"That’s what it sounded like to me. Looks like he’s trying to twist our arms about the Kings." I replied.
"Like sowing discord amongst us? To what end?"
"Who knows brother... But we can be sure of one thing. It will definitely get worse before it gets better. Assume there are spies everywhere, and the only thing we can do is protect ourselves and our Duhtchy."
"Right..." He replied uneasily.
I could understand his concerns, but it was clear as day that they weren’t going to play fair, and they clearly had ways to break the rules. If we asked for help we would appear weak, and if we took them head-on we would lose.
"Well, you know I can always help you two. What are friends for? It’s lonely without you boys around now..."
I suddenly remembered what Gaibe had said to us and winced. He would no doubt come to our rescue, but the problem was that he had agreed to create a rehab facility. We would put him in danger if he tried to help us.
’Well it’s clear that they will put our backs up against the wall... How long until all hell breaks loose?’
