Chapter 978: Chapter 538: The Treasure of the King of Persia_2
Clarence Hughes suddenly wanted to accompany them as well.
He envied Sean Knight even more—having people like Elijah Hastings and Lincoln Harrington faithfully following him, while he himself had to toil exhaustively just to retain talent for the school.
However, Clarence didn’t harbor any resentment towards Sean Knight. After all, he had researched Sean’s past before extending an invitation.
Sean, a commoner by birth, had worked his way up to where he was without becoming an upstart; he even set up a fund when confronted with someone like Clarence.
Here he was, a billionaire, who would personally come over for such a trivial matter.
In foreign countries, some might call it a hobby, an excitement.
But Clarence preferred to think of it as "a pure heart", implying that even after becoming wealthy, Sean hadn’t been blinded by money; he was still doing philanthropic work for the common people.
Therefore, while Clarence envied him, he didn’t feel jealous.
This was someone else’s opportunity, the fruit of their struggle and hard work.
If Clarence didn’t have such magnanimity, he couldn’t possibly engage in his current endeavors.
After all, if he had been solely focused on personal gain, given his background, he would have been rich by now.
The second day, after breakfast, Hassan greeted Sean and then hurried off to take care of his business.
Zack brought one pickup truck, saying it was ordered by Elder Hassan for Sean and his group to use.
Another person from the tribe, a mountaineer, came along and took Clarence to the outskirt of the village for target practice.
Sean and his group, meanwhile, left the tribe in the car and headed towards their target.
The road was bad, with potholes patched up here and there. It seemed to have been repaired by people, but at its core, it was an unsurfaced road, at best layered with sand and soil. Grooves formed by the erosion from rain or floods, even if filled with soil, would quickly be carved out again by the passage of vehicles.
As such, the car kicked up loose soil along the way, raising clouds of dust, and from afar, it appeared like a dirt dragon swiftly advancing forward.
The pickup truck was quite old, and, driving in such terrain, its suspension, sealing, and noise reduction systems were all severely degraded.
So the passengers inside the car were choking and jolting miserably.
If he hadn’t been afraid of startling others, Sean really wanted to take out one of his cars from his spatial realm to drive—this vehicle was far too uncomfortable. Even with all the items they had transported yesterday, it hadn’t been this uncomfortable.
Fortunately, the distance wasn’t too far. Seeing Sean’s discomfort, Zack slowed down the car—in the past, who cared that much? The only concern was to drive as fast as possible to the destination.
The car passed two mountains and a wasteland, and then ascended a highslope. At the top, the view opened up.
The car stopped on top of this highslope. Looking down from there, one could see a vast wasteland far away.
Occasionally, one could spot small patches of Oasis on the wasteland, but most of it was bare with little grass. Sometimes one could see stones and the messy trails of cars that had passed through.
In the center of this wasteland, there once stood a city, now reduced to ruins.
It was completely in ruins—hardly any intact houses remained.
Sean and his companions got out of the car.
"We were once on a mission on the border." Elijah suddenly spoke, "From the mountains, we looked down at a River Valley Plain that had a similar ancient city. But that one was left with only a basic square outline. Who knows how many years old that city was—
This place... it’s a bit tragic."
"It was bombed." Upon hearing Elijah’s words, Zack shook his head and said, "Back then, the Americans claimed that some of ’the United States’ soldiers were hiding in this city and proceeded to bomb it..."
"Direct bombing?" Sean was somewhat surprised, "Without any prior warning? This clearly looks like a residential area, doesn’t it?"
"Heh," Zack said with a sarcastic tone, "When the Americans bomb a place, how could they possibly give advance notice? After bombing, all they have to say is ’it was a mistake’... Moreover, they claimed it was bombing ’the United States’... Thousands of lives, gone!"
Sean shook his head.
Just seeing this city refreshed his awareness of the Americans’ shamelessness!
"This was an ancient city, in the time of the King of Persia, it was a significant town. The town had many historical relics, and after the bombing, the American army rushed in—"
Zack paused for a moment before continuing:
"Anyway, by the time the Americans left, most of the historic relics were destroyed, the cultural relics had almost been looted, and the people were either killed or fled, almost none remained.
Later, Cultural relic traffickers and speculators under the protection of hired mercenaries also came over, scoured the place once more, and when the original inhabitants who fled lined back after the war ended, there were hardly any intact houses left, and the original historical sites were levelled to the ground."
Now, Sean understood why Clarence Hughes wouldn’t come here; seeing such a scene would really take a toll on one’s mood.
"In the past, every year, there would be one or several groups of people coming here to search for treasure—after all, this had been a residence of the King of Persia.
No one is sure where the King of Persia’s treasure was scattered, and ultimately, who found it remains unknown. Thus, all these people are trying their luck, but aside from the visible cultural relics, no one knows who got their hands on the real treasure.
In our tribes, we always speculated that the treasure was probably excavated and taken away by a special unit of the Americans stationed here."
