Chapter 957: 531

Looking out, it was more like a large village than a tribe.

It seemed that two to three hundred families could live in this village.

"There are three smaller villages nearby, also part of this tribe," Clarence Hughes explained to Sean Knight, "The entire tribe’s population is about three thousand people."

The village was full of mud huts. Some trees were planted on both sides of the road, finally introducing some greenery to the view. There were fields nearby, planted with wheat and other crops.

To the north of the village was a mountain gorge, with a small river that hadn’t completely dried up. The river water was not abundant, but it was the village’s lifeline.

As a group of people walked into the village, the villagers peered curiously at them from their single-story houses.

The children were barefoot with faces turned dark from the sun, their eyes filled with curiosity.

The women were wrapped up tightly, some with even their eyes covered.

"The customs here don’t allow exposing women’s skin," Elijah Hastings whispered softly.

Under the leadership of Hassan and Elder Carman, they arrived at a relatively intact courtyard inside the village.

Inside the courtyard, Sean Knight could see some machinery the use of which he didn’t know.

Some of these items had rusted and were just lying there.

"These are things brought back from that base. We don’t know their use, but it seemed wasteful to leave them, so we hauled them back here," Hassan explained, noticing where Sean Knight’s gaze fell.

Sean Knight glanced around; the courtyard was quite large with about twenty rooms, and now many people were inside.

Quite a few people were carrying guns—AK-47s, which are among the most produced and modified automatic weapons in the world.

There were also a few carrying M16s, as well as a collection of other assorted weapons; Sean even caught sight of a Type 81 rifle.

These people were accustomed to carrying weapons. Sean wasn’t concerned; he had seen these online and had expected them upon his arrival.

Dinner was served in the large courtyard. Although the village was not wealthy, they tried their best to provide Sean Knight with a relatively lavish meal.

"Mr. Knight, I know that China is rich in supplies and you are well-traveled," Hassan said apologetically during the meal:

"As you’ve seen, our own food supply is not yet self-sufficient. If it weren’t for some trading with the outside world, we couldn’t sustain our lives.

So, this is all we can offer you as hospitality. I hope you don’t mind..."

"No, no, no, I’m very satisfied," Sean put down the mutton he was holding and said, "I appreciate your sincerity and I will do my best to cooperate with the village and make money together."

Sean’s words, translated by Clarence Hughes, made everyone, whether Elder Cameron, Hassan, or others in the village, very happy.

They could tell that Sean was talking about cooperation, not help—there was a big difference.

"I told you, with our boss coming over, you would definitely be satisfied!" Douglas Cooper muttered to Clarence Hughes.

Elder Cameron and the rest of the village didn’t feel as strongly.

In the past, the people from the Old Lighthouse had met with the tribal residents too. Their condescending attitude, acting like they were saving the tribe, made the elders very unhappy.

It was true they were poor. It was also true that they wanted to improve their lives, but they didn’t want to do it by losing their dignity.

But to have a better life, they had no choice but to not resist.

To their disappointment, the high and mighty lighthouse army didn’t bring good times, and most of the promises they made weren’t fulfilled!

Later, the Old Lighthouse left, and the United States decided to try trading with China.

These tribal areas were remote and didn’t have any special local products to offer, so they hadn’t felt the enthusiasm of Chinese netizens.

Now that Sean and his team had arrived, and with Sean’s extraordinary identity, his willingness to sit down, eat the food provided by the tribe without disdain, and engage in equal cooperation, his attitude alone was already far superior to those from the Lighthouse before!

The elders felt so, and Hassan’s feelings were even stronger.

He was someone who had left the tribe and seen the wider world.

He knew what the identity of a billionaire like Sean represented.

Such a person, in the Western World, would never come to a place like theirs.

But he came. And not only that, he came with sincerity, proposing cooperation.

Even if it was for the things in that Lighthouse base, he had at least come in person.

Hassan thought to himself that the tribe must cling to this big tree—at any cost, as long as they could hold onto Sean, with his wealth and influence, he would undoubtedly attract more Chinese merchants.

The tribe’s good days would then come!

Hassan’s calculation was loud and clear, and the look he gave Sean became increasingly friendly and eager.

After having dinner, Sean was taken by Elijah and the others to rest.

The resting place was inside this large courtyard. There were armed men on guard both outside the courtyard and on top of the college wall.

Clarence Hughes said:

"It’s somewhat better now. Before, the village’s night sentries would go out for several hundred meters, and there were many of them. Every household had a loaded gun, ready in case someone came to attack..."

The village had no regular electricity, but the courtyard had some solar panels, which could be identified as coming from China by the writing on them.
