Chapter 958: Chapter 531: It Really Is a Hospitable Place
Sean Knight speculated that it must have been brought over by Hassan during business dealings.
"Boss, this is the room you’ll be staying in. It was cleaned up today by people sent by Elder Hassan," Elijah Hastings said, "There aren’t any entertainment facilities here, but it’s quiet at night and you can sleep well."
"They have provided you with weapons, too?" Sean’s sky eye caught a glimpse of half-new automatic rifles in the room next to where Elijah and the others were staying and he asked.
"Yes, the location of that base is quite far, and with our looks, we tend to attract the attention of strangers," Elijah explained. "So, they’ve equipped us with guns as well."
Sean nodded, it seemed like the tribe’s sincerity was indeed substantial.
Nothing happened that night.
Early the next day, before Sean had gotten up, he heard someone knocking on the door.
He thought it was Elijah. Without using sky eye, he opened the door only to find it was a girl with a veiled face.
The girl looked to be about sixteen or seventeen, slender, blinking her big eyes curiously and somewhat nervously at Sean.
In the girl’s hands was a basin filled with clear water and a towel laid on the side. Sean immediately understood that she was there to help him wash his face.
Although there was a river behind the village, the River Water was scarce, making clean water quite precious within the tribe.
It seemed that the tribe took his presence very seriously.
Just as Sean was about to decline the girl’s attendance, Clarence Hughes appeared next to him and pointed at the girl, telling Sean:
"Mr. Knight, this girl is named Zena Fitzgerald, the prettiest girl in the village. She has been sent by the Elders Council of the village to attend to you. If you refuse, she might be misunderstood as providing poor service, and she could likely be stoned to death."
Sean thought to himself, is there such a practice?
However, when in Rome, do as the Romans do, he then didn’t say much and gestured for Zena to come in.
Without uttering a word, Zena came in and began helping Sean with washing up, squeezing the toothpaste, and tidying the Bedding.
Breakfast was relatively simple. Sean remembered the Zhaikou Milk Tea Powder he had purchased when he returned to Xinjiang and decided to share it with everyone to drink.
After breakfast, Sean said to Elder Hassan:
"When can I take a look at that base?"
"Since Mr. Knight is here, why not take a tour first and get familiar with this place?" Hassan didn’t expect Sean to want to start working immediately and was a bit surprised, "We also have some Historic Relics around here. They might not be famous, but they have our traditional features."
When Hassan mentioned Historic Relics, Sean remembered the things that had been destroyed by the United States, and he shook his head, saying:
"No, I’m here to solve problems. So, I hope to start working as soon as possible; that would put my mind at ease."
Hassan and the others were naturally pleased that Sean could get to work right away, so they arranged two cars, and with Hassan leading, they went to the base.
"The better cars in the village all came from the base." On the car, Hassan was not at all secretive, "The Lighthouse Brigade did a lot of bad things here, but the things they left behind are quite good, they just consume too much oil."
The roads here were too bad, and supply replenishment was not easy, which was why Hassan made such a comment.
The base was quite far from the village, and by the time they arrived, it was almost Noon.
The base was built in a relatively flat area of a mountain Valley, with Bunker Observation Points built on the surrounding high ground, including one toppled steel watchtower.
The base covered an area of at least three Football Fields, and the reinforcing steel bar and concrete buildings looked very sturdy. At a glance, one could distinguish the residences from other buildings such as the garage.
At this time, all the doors of the base were wide open; the doors had disappeared and nothing much was visible inside.
Anything even slightly useful had been taken away. Even things that didn’t seem useful, like the items in the courtyard of the village, had been hauled away.
Sean surveyed the base from a high point on the western side. To the north of the base was a Garbage Dump, where a pile of slag that seemed like mining waste caught Sean’s attention.
"Drive over there; I want to check it out," Sean pointed to the location.
Hassan was a little puzzled. Sean had come all the way to the outskirts of the base, not to look at the base, but to see that garbage. What was so interesting there?
Approaching the pile of slag, Sean got out of the car and went over, picking up a piece of Ore to inspect.
"Mr. Knight, have you found something?" Hassan asked, at the same time recalling the words of Elder Cameron from Last night.
"Isn’t Mr. Knight a bit too young to find those things?"
Cameron’s concerns could be understood by Hassan.
The elders of the village were individuals who had emerged with many years of mountain life experience and were appointed for their merits.
Young people of Sean’s age in the village were the main Labor force, but they were not valued—they were still in the stage of being educated.
After all, despite their strength and energy, their skills, experience, knowledge, and worldly wisdom were no match for those of the Elderly.
Such people could not bear great responsibility.
But the people Clarence Hughes had brought were all of this young age. Could they be up to the task?
Finding things in the mountains truly required experience.
Hassan was on good terms with Clarence Hughes and naturally would not speak ill of him. Clarence was insistent on collaborating with Sean, so there must have been a reason for it.
On the surface, Hassan firmly supported Sean’s undertaking, but in reality, he was under pressure too.
If Sean and his team could not demonstrate results, then although Hassan wouldn’t lose his position as an elder, at the very least there could be some restrictions.
Therefore, he was very attentive to Sean’s actions.
Sean picked up a piece of slag and counter-asked the people who had gathered around:
"Do you know what kind of mine this slag is from?"
Everyone shook their heads. No one was an expert in this area.
Hassan asked:
"Mr. Knight, do you know what kind of mine this is?"
Sean tossed the slag aside, dusted off his hands, and said casually:
"A golden mine."
"What?"
"How is that possible?"
