Chapter 918: 518
Sean Knight and Lincoln Harrington exchanged glances before finding places to hide.
In their eyes, as long as they stayed hidden until the gunfire ceased, they could cross the border with ease.
However, contrary to their hopes, the gunfire grew closer, heading straight toward their hiding spot.
Sean Knight raised his body to look in that direction and saw a group of military personnel chasing about seven or eight people in various clothes toward them.
Sean Knight glanced at the area in front of him and thought, this is bad!
The area in front of them was precisely the easiest place to cross the border. Not far away was a forest, good for hiding; this side was relatively high ground, slightly lower than the iron wire mesh, which also made it easier to climb over.
So, the pursued people were heading this way—or perhaps their plan had always been to run here.
Watching as these people were mere several tens of meters away from reaching them, Sean Knight reluctantly said to Lincoln Harrington,
"Put away the gun, and let’s run together! Let’s cross now to avoid getting caught in the crossfire..."
Lincoln Harrington looked at the people running towards them and knew they had no other choice.
Both men stood up and ran toward the iron wire mesh, startling the people behind them.
"Bang, bang, bang!"
The approaching soldiers in military uniform didn’t expect there to be people hiding in front, where the shots were meant to be a scare tactic, hoping to make those people stop. But Sean Knight and Lincoln Harrington took a few steps and reached the iron wire mesh!
The men in military uniforms knew they had to start shooting immediately or they’d be in trouble, so they began firing in this direction!
Sean Knight and Lincoln Harrington, agile and employing tactical movements, quickly crossed the iron wire mesh and ran toward the forest!
Curse words filled the air behind them; these two had put everyone in jeopardy!
They knew they would have to fight for their lives or else remain there forever, so they all summoned their last bit of energy and ran towards the iron wire mesh!
"Bang, bang, bang!"
The soldiers continued to run and shoot while shouting.
Though most bullets missed their mark, there were still one or two people hit, who screamed and tumbled to the ground.
As Sean Knight and Lincoln Harrington approached the forest, they heard someone shouting from within,
"Come over here, hurry up!"
The two men were startled!
Then Sean Knight saw that inside the forest, there were about seven or eight people with guns waiting, calling out urgently with arms raised, "Hurry, you’ll be safe once you get here!"
Sean Knight and Lincoln Harrington exchanged another glance, and both understood.
It turned out those crossing the border were being met on the other side!
It was only their premature rush that had disrupted the operation!
The people behind them had begun to climb the iron wire mesh, and the pursuing soldiers had no qualms about shooting directly at the mesh!
The armed individuals in the forest also began firing back at them, startling the soldiers, who immediately took cover and performed tactical maneuvers.
This delay gave those climbing the iron wire mesh a chance to catch their breath, and they hurriedly sped up. Except for the last one who was hit by a bullet while climbing and fell down, the rest made it through.
However, there were only five left.
The five dashed into the forest, no longer caring about anything else, and the soldiers, knowing they couldn’t stop them, ceased fire and lay in wait for them to disappear—they, too, were afraid of being shot at.
Once the five ran into the forest and heard the absence of gunfire, they all sat or lay down to catch their breath, no longer moving.
The gunmen didn’t rush them. A girl with freckles moved forward proactively and handed out bottled water.
Sean Knight and Lincoln Harrington received some as well.
"You two are quite something, managing to bring your package with you while crossing, not bad; you move well. How about it, consider working with us?" a bald man carrying an automatic rifle said to Sean Knight and Lincoln Harrington, admiration evident in his eyes.
This bald man seemed to be the leader of the group, wearing a once-white T-shirt that had turned yellow from sweat stains, with muscular tattoo-covered arms on both sides, giving him a formidable strength.
At his side stood a lean young man with a submachine gun in his hand, but his gaze was far from friendly.
"No thanks, we have things to attend to," Sean Knight shook his head, "We’re lucky to have made it over, and we thank you for your help."
"No need, no need," the bald man said, accepting Sean Knight’s refusal with some regret but without pressing further. He waved his hand. "We’re paid to do this; it’s part of the job."
After distributing water to everyone, the freckled girl advised those lying down before returning and looked at Sean Knight and the others curiously, asking,
"Where are you folks from? How did you end up here?"
"We are Chinese," Sean Knight explained. "We were doing business here and then got caught in the hostilities."
"Chinese, huh? I thought you were Japanese..." the lean, tall man remarked with an unkind jest.
Lincoln Harrington looked at the man and responded coldly,
"The most unacceptable thing for Chinese is to be mistaken for Japanese. I expect you to take back that statement!"
"What if I don’t?" the tall, thin man provocatively retorted.
Lincoln Harrington took a step forward, and several of the lean man’s associates promptly surrounded them.
"Ducey, take back what you said," the bald man intervened. "I understand the Chinese people’s feelings; don’t joke about other nations."
