Chapter 905: Chapter 513 Perilous Road_3
Sean Knight peeked out and scanned the sky; he always sensed that something up there was watching them.
Even Sky Eye, powerful as it was, couldn’t see that high.
His actions made Lincoln Harrington tense as well.
Elijah Hastings, Lincoln Harrington, and Sean Knight were all very clear that once Sean thought there was danger, it meant there truly was danger lurking around.
Lincoln wasn’t as easygoing as Sean; he had already drawn his gun—a weapon Sean had given him upon entering the frontier.
Lincoln was incredibly impressed with Sean’s ability to procure weapons at any time.
He was about to aim the gun at Peter Smith when Sean suddenly shouted:
"Danger! There’s a bomb-drop from the sky! Jump out of the car!"
Without hesitation, he opened the door and leaped out!
Lincoln didn’t hesitate either; he immediately yanked open the opposite door and jumped down!
Peter Smith was terrified!
But he instinctively trusted what Sean had said, after all, up in this land’s sky, there were many drones.
No one could guarantee there weren’t drones above dropping bombs!
Peter jerked the steering wheel hard to the left, driving the car off the carriage-way. He didn’t wait for the car to crash into the trees; he had already rolled out!
The next moment, there was a "boom" on the highway—an explosion!
Sean and Lincoln had already rolled down to the bottom of the carriage-way and found cover, looking up at the sky warily.
Sean had already spotted it: a drone hovering tens of meters in the air. It was the one that dropped the bomb.
And now, it seemed to be adjusting its position, ready to drop another bomb—this was a small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), not very advanced, the type used as toys Inside China.
It could carry two small bombs.
Of course, enough to kill a person or two.
Before Sean could speak, Lincoln had already raised his gun and fired at the drone!
"Bang!"
The drone’s wing was clipped off, breaking its balance, and it wobbled down.
Finally, it fell into the wilderness tens of meters away and then exploded with a "boom!"
Sean checked the sky again and seeing no other drones nearby, immediately got up with Lincoln and pulled up Peter.
"Hurry up and get the car out, we need to leave fast!"
It was only then that Peter reacted; he got back in the car, which had not completely stalled, and the three of them managed to get the car back on the road and then sped off as fast as possible.
By the time the other two drones arrived to search, there was no trace of the car.
Over the next several days, Peter started following Sean’s advice, making detours, resting mostly during the day, and driving at Night.
Indeed, this reduced a lot of dangers—
At one point, they hid the car and watched another speed past.
When they resumed their journey, they found that car abandoned at the roadside, with the inside torn apart and bloodstains on the ground, but no people in sight.
Looking at the ground, Lincoln said:
"There are bullet shells, over a dozen people came here; it looks like they took the people inside away."
Peter’s face immediately darkened.
He had seen the news; he knew where those who were taken went without saying.
Sean clapped his hands and said:
"Let’s go, we need to leave here as quickly as possible. We shouldn’t wait for those people to make a comeback. Check the satellite map to see if there’s another road nearby; the road ahead might be impassable."
Following the satellite map, they took an alternative path.
Although the Road was difficult and devoid of human habitation, they encountered no further dangers.
"Bang!"
The rough Road was unfamiliar to Sean, who had grown accustomed to the ubiquity of asphalt roads in every village in China.
It felt like a return to twenty years ago.
Then they had a flat tire.
Fortunately, all three were quite competent and quickly changed the tire. Sean then suggested:
"Let’s take a break. We should be fairly close to our Destination."
Peter said:
"We were supposed to arrive today, but the detour will add another day’s journey."
Then he added, with relief:
"Luckily, we changed our route, or else we might have been captured and turned into cannon fodder by now!"
There was no sign of human life nearby: what used to be vast farmlands was now covered in wild grass.
Reflecting on the sight while eating their Self-heating Food, Sean and his companions couldn’t help but feel emotional.
"No wonder our Ancestors said ’Better to be a dog in times of tranquility than a human in times of chaos," Lincoln indicated towards the vast fields and said:
"Back home, the farmers would lament such fertile Land going to waste, wouldn’t they?"
"All right, let’s focus on our task and stop worrying for others," Sean finished eating and shook his head: "It’s too much to handle."
"Boss, I always feel there’s an ambiguity in your words," Lincoln tidied up the empty boxes and buried them in the ground, picking up Sean’s as well.
"Can’t let others hear that; they might get the wrong idea," he said.
"I didn’t say anything, though," Sean chuckled, "From here on out, we need to be even more careful."
"Lester Francis said there are others interested in ’those items’ not just us. Once we reach the place, I’ll find you a more powerful Weapon; the moment anything seems off, just shoot!"
"Don’t worry, boss. Here, I don’t have such a high moral burden, surviving is what matters most!" Lincoln knew what Sean was hinting at.
If you show mercy here, you’re just waiting to die!
The car started again, and Peter Smith became even more silent.
A few hours later, as it fully brightened up, the silhouette of the city was clear in the distance.
Peter pulled the car over and said to Sean:
"Mr. Knight, I’ll drive to this point and wait for you. I won’t bring the car into the City; it’s too conspicuous. The rest is up to you. I’ll hide the car nearby and wait for your return."
Sean and Lincoln were surprised, but they quickly understood.
"Okay, hide well, don’t get captured while waiting for us; that would be bad," Lincoln nodded casually, "In that case, we won’t come to rescue you."
The half-joking words made Peter’s expression awkward, and he had no reply.
With their gear on their backs, Sean and Lincoln headed into the city.
Peter watched their retreating figures, theoretically feeling that he should be safer than they were. But at that moment, he felt as though the danger was solely his own.
Hopefully, it was just a mistaken feeling!
