Chapter 904: Chapter 513 Perilous Road_2
Sean Knight closed the box and signaled that the man could leave.
The man nodded and left.
Lincoln Harrington helped Sean Knight stow the box properly.
"Lincoln, could you arrange a meeting with William Smith to see if they can join us? Tell him the reward will be substantial if he can make it."
Lincoln immediately made a phone call to William Smith.
In fact, Sean Knight wanted to call Elijah Hastings and Douglas Cooper as well, but later thought better of it.
The situation over there was quite urgent, and from what Lester Francis had said, the city was still some distance from the combat area and not so dangerous.
If it were that dangerous, Sean Knight would not consider going.
After a while, Lincoln came back to report to Sean Knight:
"Boss, William Smith and his squad have already embarked on a mission. However, he also said that even if they weren’t on a mission, they wouldn’t go. Their squad, though already small in numbers, would still be too conspicuous there.
Once targeted by military police, there’s a ninety percent chance they’d be captured and sent to the battlefield. So, they definitely don’t want to go and advise us not to either."
Hearing this, Sean Knight thought it over and then said:
"Let’s just go, the two of us. Fewer people, smaller target, and easier to resolve any issues that arise."
After the decision was made, Sean Knight called Lester Francis:
"Mr. Lester, I have received your earnest money. We will depart Tomorrow, and I hope you can provide the necessary assistance."
"No problem. I will give you suitable identities here and provide a driver who understands the local language. However, you will need to handle any troubles you encounter on the road yourself.
In normal times, I do have some influence, but currently, nobody there listens to anyone, so please Mr. Knight, be extremely cautious. Safety first!"
The employer’s sincere mention of "safety first" showed genuine concern.
The Second Day, Sean Knight met the young man who was to be the driver, who introduced himself as Peter Smith.
"I once attended university in Kyiv and had a girlfriend there, but we split up later due to certain matters," Peter was talkative, proactively sharing details about himself:
"This time Mr. Lester has paid me a lot of money, otherwise, I definitely would not have agreed to this."
Sean Knight appreciated Peter’s frankness.
From his appearance, Peter was a handsome young man, capable of attracting Beautiful Girls; it was nothing surprising.
Peter was driving an off-road vehicle, which was already stocked with some Supplies.
Sean Knight and Lincoln Harrington purchased some additional Supplies and loaded the car, then Sean Knight called Lester Francis again.
"Mr. Lester, we are setting out now, but be prepared for possible communication interruptions along the way."
"I wish you a safe journey. I will keep both your Rooms reserved for your return," Lester also showed generosity, "I believe you will return safely, with good news."
After hanging up the phone, the trio set off.
They headed southeast, not particularly hurrying.
That day, they reached the frontier, where the security checks were strict.
Peter didn’t involve Sean Knight or Lincoln, but managed the procedures at the checkpoint himself; somehow, he successfully got the car through with a bit of negotiation.
Naturally, Sean Knight kept Sky Eye open, remaining alert, and noticed that Peter had handed over a stack of money to the officials.
The checkpoint was in a remote location with few passersby, which was probably why Peter passed through so easily.
"From here on, we’ll try to take routes with fewer people," Peter said while driving, "I’ll handle all communication since I’ve lived here before and can make a more convincing case.
I hope you can stay quiet, since we certainly don’t want to be conscripted, right?"
Sean Knight and Lincoln both nodded in agreement.
It seemed Peter was quite aware of what he was getting into.
Initially, traveling on country roads was smooth. Not all areas were in chaos.
But as they delved deeper, the journey became more challenging.
Especially near areas affected by conflict, where roads had been blown up, villages burned down, and the remnants of tanks and armored vehicles were scattered nearby.
When they encountered such places, Peter would floor the accelerator and speed through.
Later on, they occasionally faced similar situations, until Sean Knight made a definitive decision:
"We’ll continue to take longer detours from here on out and should stay further away from Combat Areas."
Peter was initially stubborn, thinking that Sean Knight and Lincoln did not understand the area like he did since they hadn’t been there before.
However, Peter clearly overestimated his capabilities.
It was like someone who had ruled the Swimming pool for years, thinking he was an excellent swimmer, but was utterly ignorant of the Sea and waves he was about to face.
The next day, they drove on a deserted highway. This was also a country road, in relatively good condition, but the occasional craters punctured the peaceful atmosphere.
"Peter, this place is too exposed; I suggest we find some Tree Shade, stop, and wait for nightfall before continuing," Sean Knight said, noticing that Peter had no intention of evading and continued to drive at high speed.
"Mr. Knight, there’s no need to worry so much," Peter said. "If we keep driving for over an hour, we’ll enter a Forest, and once there, we’ll be safe!"
