Chapter 853 - 496
Chapter 853: 496
With an energy boost, Elijah Hastings only needed a brief rest before he returned to normal.
Douglas Cooper had already arrived with his gun by their side as Elijah recounted his recent encounter to Sean Knight.
"...When I got here and saw the scene of those temples in the distance, I knew I had found the place. Just as I was about to send a signal, I saw a monk walking towards me..."
Thinking back on the scene still left Elijah full of trepidation:
"Seeing the monk approaching, I thought it was better to ask him about the Temple and then send the signal. The monk looked quite thin, and he didn’t move very fast. As he walked over, I went up to him to ask about the Temple, but I didn’t expect that..."
Elijah paused, his eyes fleeting with confusion, then said:
"He spoke a language I couldn’t understand, and then it was like he was chanting scriptures. Next, I smelled a faint, pleasant odor, and then I felt a bit drowsy, wanting to lie down and sleep... I knew in my mind that this wasn’t right, but I just...I just..."
Elijah didn’t finish his sentence, but Sean knew what he wanted to say.
For someone with as strong a will as Elijah, ordinary hypnosis wouldn’t have had any effect.
It must have required very powerful measures to be effective.
To be able to make Elijah feel drowsy upon meeting him, that old monk was formidable!
A sudden thought struck Sean about the odor Elijah mentioned, he sniffed the air and then laughed.
"The old monk tricked you. He didn’t just use hypnosis, but also combined it with medicine powder. Otherwise, you might not have fallen, and could’ve killed him instead."
Sean saw that the rifle was beside where Elijah sat, with the fuse already off.
If the dosage of the powder used by the old monk had been slightly less, it might have been him lying on the ground now.
Elijah thought so too. He hadn’t let down his guard at the time, but the old monk hadn’t used combat arts, and Elijah had carelessly fallen into his trap.
Who could expect to pass out just because a monk recited some scriptures and they smelled something?
"From now on, we shouldn’t split up. Let’s move together," Sean pointed towards the expansive Ruin Site of the Temple and said, "At least we can look out for each other as a group of three. That old monk is suspicious; he might have accomplices!"
What Sean suggested was exactly what the others were thinking.
This old monk was too unorthodox!
In all the folk corners of the country, they had faced danger, but they always came out on top.
But this was the first time they’d been bested by a monk!
They had to recover their position!
This thought brought everyone’s alertness to its peak.
The three formed a Combat Group in a Triangular Formation and slowly made their way towards the Temple’s location.
The Temple Gate was already in ruins, with grass and shrubbery growing on either side. The road that was usually too poor for grass to grow on was now covered in a thin layer of Plants.
The damp environment here was ideal for plant life; looking around, some trees inside the Temple had grown incredibly high into the air, while some nearby buildings had weathered or even collapsed.
"There are no signs that anyone has come in here!" Arriving at the Entrance of the Temple, Douglas Cooper carefully observed the original path and noticed that the green moss-like Plants didn’t show signs of being trodden upon.
Sean activated his sky eye and scanned around, then pointed at the side of the Wooden Door that had already collapsed and said:
"There are, look there, and there’s a bit of Wood Chips rubbed off..."
The Wooden Door had long since rotted, becoming very soft. Any passage through here, even a slight touch, would bring down a piece of debris.
"It really is..." Douglas, carrying his Gun, went to take a closer look, bent down to pick up a fragment, and said:
"Boss, your eyesight is impressive!"
"We need to be careful; this old monk might just be a master..."
By Sean’s assessment, the old monk had to weigh upwards of fifty kilograms.
Now stepping on the green moss yet leaving almost no trace—unless he was deliberately deceiving them to confuse Sean and his companions—there was also a possibility that the monk had Kung Fu skills.
Whether it was Yoga or something else, the fact that this guy also knew hypnosis meant they had to be even more careful!
"No matter what he knows, he surely can’t be immune to swords and guns!" An irritated Elijah, carrying his rifle, moved forward, "I refuse to believe that, even with a stream of bullets, he can still jump around lively?"
This was something Sean believed to be true.
The three men entered the Temple, with Sean directing the way as the Combat Group cautiously advanced.
No one dared assure that in such a vast area of the Temple there was only one enemy, nor dare they assume that the monk wouldn’t have other sinister plots, so they truly didn’t dare speed up.
Even with his sky eye, Sean was extremely cautious. He jumped onto the College Wall and saw that this part of the Temple must have had over 100 rooms, Courtyards within Courtyards, along with some strange buildings.
Fearing an ambush or encirclement, Sean simply hopped on the wall to indicate directions; his sky eye allowed him to see the old monk’s footprints clearly, making directing quite effortless.
"Stop!" Suddenly, Sean shouted for a halt, and Elijah and Douglas, who had extended their distance and were advancing with their guns, immediately stopped.
"Boss, what’s wrong?" Douglas asked, puzzled, looking up at Sean on top of the wall.
"There’s an ambush—" Sean’s expression was stern as he looked towards the Ground ahead:
"Do you see it, one and a half meters Ahead, isn’t the Soil quality a different color?"
