Chapter 852: 495

Cheryl Suweton and Haruda Tomoko did just that; after eating, they lay in their tent, trying to get some sleep.

Sean Knight didn’t expect the two women to be of much use in this operation, so he left Gru Devon and Lincoln Harrington behind to watch over the tent and protect the women.

The three of them spread out to both sides of the lake and along the shore, searching for traces of the temple.

Previously, Sean Knight had asked Gru about the temple, but his knowledge was limited to hearsay, having never been there himself, which is why Sean Knight didn’t ask him to join the search.

The lake covered almost a few thousand acres, roughly comparable to the reservoir behind Sean Knight’s village.

Under normal circumstances, it would take half a day to walk around the lake.

But now with two people together, Sean Knight felt it would take roughly two hours.

If they could find it earlier, maybe they could return sooner.

Anyway, today was just for scouting; even if they found it today, Sean Knight did not plan to explore it.

The small lake was a drinking spot for many wild animals; near the water, one could see animal paw prints, hoof marks everywhere, and some birds circling low over the lake surface, occasionally plunging into the water and emerging with a fish in their beaks.

What surprised Sean Knight was that some waterfowl had just captured a fish when they suddenly sank into the water and did not resurface.

There were actually big creatures in the lake that could eat birds!

While enjoying the lake views and walking around it, Sean Knight moved quickly — mainly because the scenery wasn’t interesting enough to make him stop and take a closer look.

Sky Eye activated, the lake was pretty deep, but no suspicious buildings and the like were discovered closer to the shore.

Occasional sightings of solitary metal utensils in the lake let Sean Knight know that people had indeed been active here before.

So, they continued to look for traces of human activity.

Having Sky Eye was like cheating.

Seeing metal items in the lake and sunken man-made goods, such as wooden boats, Sean Knight realized that the further he walked in this direction, the fewer things there were, so there was only one possibility: this side was not where the temple was located.

After all, the closer to the temple, the more one would expect the traces of human activity and the more things that should have sunk in the lake.

But now it was the opposite, which was very telling.

Sean Knight simply turned back — he had started from the campground, facing the lake and walking clockwise from the left. Elijah Hastings walked counterclockwise, while Douglas Cooper searched the forest along the shore.

Now, as he returned and moved towards Elijah Hastings’ direction, Sean Knight guessed that Elijah Hastings’ side should be the focus and the most likely place to discover the temple.

However, Elijah Hastings had not sent out any signals, which puzzled Sean Knight.

Gru and Lincoln Harrington were a bit confused to see Sean Knight circling back.

Lincoln Harrington stepped forward to ask, but Sean Knight waved his hand and went towards the lake.

Because of some shrubbery near the shore, they couldn’t see where Elijah Hastings had gotten to.

With Sky Eye activated, Sean Knight could see the traces of where Elijah Hastings had walked.

The number of animals coming this way was clearly higher than where Sean Knight had previously walked.

This made Sean Knight wonder if it was because there was once a temple here?

Passing through the shrubbery and crossing a little brook, Sean Knight gradually noticed a path covered in dwarf grass emerging by the lakeside.

That’s right, it must be here!

Thrilled, Sean Knight stepped onto the path and strode forward.

And then he saw a collapsed shed by the roadside, shoes lost in the grass, and... huh?

A bayonet!

Sean Knight recognized it; it must be a bayonet from a Type 38 rifle!

The bayonet was rusted beyond recognition and the tip was broken off.

It laid discarded in the grass by the roadside, likely still bearing traces of blood.

Whether it broke during combat or was broken afterwards, it was impossible to tell now.

But with this bayonet, Sean Knight suddenly felt that the treasure Haruda Tomoko had mentioned might indeed be worth searching for.

After all, Japan owed a lot of debt, and now any bit that could be recovered was worth it.

Filled with excitement, Sean Knight continued forward, only to see a figure.

Or rather, two figures, but Elijah Hastings was swaying at the moment, then suddenly sat down on the ground, and finally collapsed completely.

The other was a monk; seeing Elijah Hastings fall, he began to bend over, reaching out to touch Elijah Hastings’ head.

"Stop!"

Sean Knight was startled; if the monk pressed down, Hastings might not die, but he’d surely no longer be himself, right?

He couldn’t believe that Elijah Hastings would easily be convinced to lie down willingly by the opponent!

That guy must have used trickery!

Even as he shouted, an automatic rifle had appeared in his hands, and with a distance of two hundred meters, Sean Knight could also be called a sniper!

However, as he aimed, the monk smiled at Sean Knight, and suddenly his figure faded and vanished!

Sean Knight didn’t believe for a moment that a person could truly vanish into thin air!

He immediately activated Sky Eye, and sure enough, the monk was still in sight, but had retreated a couple of steps, attempting to get away!

"Bang!"

Sean Knight immediately opened fire!

The monk, who had been watching all along, saw Sean Knight armed and naturally became scared, turning to run.

It was precisely this run that allowed the monk to dodge Sean Knight’s shot.

Seeing the monk escape, Sean Knight didn’t fire again; he was more concerned about Elijah Hastings’ safety and quickly got up to run over.

Reaching Elijah Hastings, Sean Knight saw his eyelids closed tight, his eyeballs spinning nonstop, indicating he was still trapped in a nightmare or illusion and hadn’t awoken.

Looking in the direction where the monk had run, there indeed was a large building complex.

Monk Temple!

Sean Knight swept a glance, saw no sign of the monk, and knowing there wouldn’t be any immediate disturbance or danger, he began vigorously shaking Elijah Hastings awake!

Elijah Hastings, having been mesmerized by the monk, awakened with Sean Knight’s shaking.

Seeing Sean Knight, Elijah Hastings’ first words were:

"Boss, be careful, there’s a monk... dangerous!"

Sean Knight nodded at him, aware that this treasure hunt might indeed be troublesome.

This monk was no simple character!

At that moment, Douglas Cooper and the others, having heard the gunshot, also ran over.

Seeing the temple building on the other side and Elijah Hastings sitting on the ground, Douglas Cooper also raised his gun.

Who dares to mess with the boss or the leader?
