Chapter 834: Chapter 489 Talking about Feelings Hurts the Pocket_3
So he gritted his teeth and continued to walk inside.
The road he had chosen, originally thought to be a broad road, turned out to be a narrow sheep lane that was damnably blocked now and then!
If it weren’t for the simple map he carried and the earnest words of his Grandfather before he passed away, Haruda Tomoko might have turned around and walked back by now.
But thinking about the possible size of the treasure Grandfather had described, Haruda Tomoko seemed to regain her strength, straightened her backpack, and continued forward.
Sean Knight turned his head and glanced at her emotionlessly, continuing on ahead.
This lady probably had never experienced anything like this. Her idea of a treasure hunt probably wasn’t much different from a picnic at the waterfall a few days ago, right?
She had some tough times ahead!
Sure enough, as they continued further inside, the ground became muddy.
In some places, stepping down would immediately cause water to squirt out.
Everyone’s shoes were getting wet.
It was only then that Sean Knight noticed that the guides were all wearing leather boots, which although warm for walking here, at least kept their feet from getting uncomfortably wet.
Haruda Tomoko was wearing those impractical but good-looking travel shoes, walking with one deep step followed by a shallow one. Not paying attention, she stepped in, and when she lifted her foot, the shoe got stuck.
"Ah—"
Watching as the shoe quickly got submerged in the yellow-brown water with unknown bugs floating in it, Haruda’s long-suppressed fear and frustration erupted. She screamed and fell backward, sitting on the ground.
The movement of the water startled more insects that had been resting on the surface to fly up into the air.
The whole group stopped in their tracks.
The guide in front turned back to look, with a hint of disdain in his eyes.
The guide at the back went forward to help Haruda Tomoko up and fished her shoe out of the water, shook it off, and placed it in front of her.
"Put it on and let’s hurry," the lead guide said sternly, "According to our schedule, we need to reach the first ruin site by today. At this pace, we won’t make it even by nightfall!"
Sean Knight frowned as he watched Haruda Tomoko slowly weeping and changing her shoes. Seeing that the guides weren’t moving, he said to Douglas Cooper:
"Douglas, carry Miss Chika’s backpack."
Douglas Cooper responded:
"Alright."
He stepped forward, took Haruda’s backpack, and lifted it.
Twenty-some kilograms, no need to carry it on the back, holding it was enough to walk.
For him, this weight was really nothing.
Haruda Tomoko looked gratefully at Sean Knight, thanked Douglas Cooper, then stood up.
Although her feet still felt uncomfortable, without the backpack, she could at least keep up with the team now.
The deeper they went, the denser the trees became, and the more difficult the path was to navigate. The guides also had to discern carefully before confirming the direction to head in.
Compared to the struggles of Haruda Tomoko, Sean Knight and his group were relatively at ease, and it was almost like a leisurely walk for them.
With their physical fitness and experience, walking here was basically effortless, and they even had the leisure to observe the tree species and wildlife in the jungle.
And speaking of which, there were quite a few precious trees in this jungle.
I had heard that the domestic supply of rosewood had been depleted, leading many people to turn to India to source this wood.
It was just hearsay then, but now I’ve discovered that indeed there are plenty of good woods here.
There are rosewood and phoebe zhennan, which is quite rare indeed.
Moreover, the age of these trees is no small matter, with some being hundreds of years old.
Sean Knight thought to himself that this Dutt Rivera was truly sitting on a mountain of treasures; he just wondered whether Dutt realized it or not.
It then occurred to Sean that he had never asked what Dutt’s family business was with Japan, could it be wood?
With these thoughts, Sean and his group, following the guide, kept walking, resting only for half an hour in the middle to grab a quick bite before continuing on their way.
Although they kept moving, the distance they covered wasn’t long, mainly because there were no roads, and the guides worked hard, cutting through the shrubbery with machetes to make paths for those behind them.
They occasionally had to watch for and avoid dangerous animals that might appear on the path, like snakes.
Finally, at nightfall, they arrived at a ruin site that had long been abandoned, now overtaken by vines and shrubbery.
Standing in front of the ruin, the leading guide said:
"This is the first ruin site, and it’s the closest to the outside. During the war, this was a divine temple housing many monks, and the nearby villagers would come here to worship."
Now, there was no trace left of the temple’s former splendor, only broken walls remained, with even the tallest building not exceeding two meters, essentially covered in green.
"Tonight, we will camp here," the guide stated. "Start setting up the tents now. I hope everyone works together, otherwise, some will have no choice but to camp in the open."
As he said this, he put down his backpack, took out items from inside and began to set up a tent.
Sean took out a solar-powered lamp and went off to hang it up in the tree-top.
Suddenly, a plethora of flying bugs immediately swarmed towards the light, and soon there were countless insects buzzing about, even some large moths joined in the fray, fluttering their wings.
Outside the ruin was a relatively flat area where they pitched the tents, Sean prepared a quick-setup foldable tent for Cheryl Suweton, which just popped open when the straps were released, requiring no assembly. All that was needed was spreading a moisture-proof pad inside and securing the tent from the outside.
Haruda Tomoko watched enviously as Cheryl swiftly got her single-person tent ready, then bowed her head to deal with her own.
Even though she had been trained before coming, setting it up was not as smooth as she thought it would be.
She turned her head to look at Douglas Cooper, who had helped carry her backpack, only to find he had already set up his tent and started to prepare food.
The savory scent wafted over, and Haruda Tomoko suddenly felt like a failure!
No, she had to keep going!
The final victory was sure to be hers!
Haruda Tomoko encouraged herself while working on her tent.
Luckily, she had some basics down, and it wasn’t very difficult, she ultimately got it set up.
By then, Sean and the others had already started their hot meal.
Several guides gathered together, chatting in low voices as they ate.
Sean couldn’t understand them, nor did he care.
What he was most concerned about now was whether there were any good items inside the ruin.
Sean was already considering whether to take the opportunity under the cover of darkness to explore the ruin site.
After all, they had already arrived, and it was inconvenient during the daytime; would it not be easier at night?
