Chapter 824: Chapter 486: Joyous Foes Come One by One_2
Joanna is not a particularly self-centered person, and she really cares about James’s feelings. Add to that her father, Robert, owes Sean a large sum of money—this emotional debt makes Joanna somewhat uncertain in handling her relationship with James.
Joanna also knows that Sean is a busy man, and each year he can only spend a short time with her, which seems to be getting even shorter, so she especially treasures the time they have together.
However, things do not always go as one wishes; Sean had to leave New York after staying for less than half a month because of urgent matters.
Heilemann made one phone call, which Sean ignored, but what surprised Sean was that soon after, Heilemann came to visit him personally.
This time, Heilemann’s attitude was very sincere, showing none of his former arrogance.
Unfortunately, Sean was not swayed by his performance.
Sean saw clearly that, no matter how polite or humble Heilemann acted, what he was really after was the money in Sean’s pocket.
What Sean somewhat failed to understand was why Heilemann had changed his attitude.
Later, the information that Kathy gathered unraveled Sean’s doubts:
"Because those more chaotic regions of the world, especially the desert areas, everyone is reconciling and doesn’t need ammunitions as much.
Times are tough now; everyone knows that wars are not easy to start, and a large number of merchants are investing in construction in Africa, so they’re aware that solely relying on war will just make Africa poorer.
They want to opt for the cheapest possible weapons, while in the Middle East, the powder kegs have mellowed since the two countries least likely to reconcile have done just so. Moreover, they’re now digging into the pits the Americans had laid for them.
So the desert region’s preferences for weaponry have also diversified, and as for other places, those willing to spend money on expensive American weapons are just a couple of suckers left.
Now that items are hard to sell, it’s a buyer’s market. Someone like Mr. Knight, who owns a big Island and has a certain market demand, is naturally the object of their flattery.
Hayman actually saw this coming a while ago, which is why he contacted here in advance. It’s just a pity that deep down, he can’t lose the arrogance of the Anglo-Saxons, thinking that you folks here are inherently second-class citizens and giving you this trading opportunity was already showing enough face.
He didn’t expect that you’re not like the other people he’s met, those who are desperate to fit into the white person’s upper circle, and do not follow his lead.
As a result, he’s at a loss now."
With this explanation, Sean just smiled. He knew such prejudiced views weren’t something that could be solved overnight, nor did he have the inclination to go out of his way and thanklessly tackle such problems.
Isn’t it better to earn your own modest living and live a simple life? Why bother with so much else?
Heilemann actually had some understanding of China’s traditional stories, or at least someone in his staff did. Just when he planned to continue courting Daniel Walker, he was informed that Daniel had already left New York for India.
Indeed, James left New York for India, but not to avoid people like Heilemann; he went there because Cheryl called him.
James hadn’t been in touch with Cheryl for a while, and their relationship was somewhat delicate. To say it faded was not entirely true, but neither had made any effort to reach out to the other.
Sean’s intention was for Cheryl to calmly reflect on this relationship. After all, investigating his situation was quite easy; a simple investigation would readily cast him in the image of a scumbag to outsiders.
Sean also felt that Cheryl was with him mainly because he had saved her life. The idea of repaying a life-saving debt with personal commitment wasn’t uncommon, so Sean felt it was necessary to give Cheryl some time to think.
Several months of contemplation went by, and Sean didn’t expect Cheryl to suddenly make a phone call—and the call wasn’t about discussing their romantic issues.
"I’ve taken a job to help someone find their ancestor’s lost treasure," Cheryl said over the phone:
"The situation is complicated, and I need your help."
Cheryl didn’t mention a reward and Sean didn’t hesitate, particularly after Cheryl gave a detailed introduction that her employer is a Japanese woman whose ancestors were among the military officers who invaded India. At that, he became even more determined to take on this job.
This time Sean brought Elijah and his two other men, flying directly to New Delhi, India on Gulfstream piloted by Charles Young.
When Douglas learned they were leaving New York for New Delhi, his expression was unusually excited.
This surprised Sean a bit.
"Haven’t you been mixing well with Mr. Madden, Diana, and the rest, becoming one of them? I see you actually enjoy working at the Container Terminal every day. Why such a face now?" Sean asked.
"Even sea cucumber and abalone can grow tiresome if you have too much. Besides, handling containers every day exposes you to all sorts of bizarre items, some of which really make one want to vomit.
"Boss, you have no idea. A few days ago I even found two highly decomposed bodies and had quite a session with the police. I’ve realized this job isn’t that great, I’d rather stick to my old trade and be your loyal bodyguard."
