Chapter 704: Chapter 444: Whose Peach Blossom Has Arrived
The convoy set off from a war-torn country, going through a neighboring nation’s corridor to a port by the sea.
There were five vehicles in the convoy. When they saw Sean Knight’s two cars speeding towards them, they became cautious and stopped immediately.
A middle-aged man wearing glasses stepped out of the lead car, waving a five-star national flag to demonstrate his identity.
"Don’t be afraid, we’re compatriots!" Sean Knight lowered his car window and said, "Don’t worry!"
"That’s good!" The man put away the national flag and cautiously glanced at the pickup truck behind them.
"We’re all fellow countrymen." Sean waved back, and Lincoln Harrington and Douglas Cooper in the rear car also lowered their windows to reveal their unique Chinese faces.
"Are you also pulling out?" The man finally felt at ease and greeted them warmly, "Going to the capital?"
"Yes." Sean got out of the car and began chatting with the man, "You just withdrew from that region?"
"Yes! When the fighting broke out, our project had to halt. We don’t know what it’ll be like when we go back after the war ends." The middle-aged man with glasses smiled bitterly and extended his hand:
"Hello, I’m Christopher Hughes, the manager of an oil project there. Most of the people in this convoy are from our project department and their families."
"My name is Sean Knight, I’m on a trip." Sean reached out his hand, "Since we met, it’s fate that we, Chinese people, have come across each other here, it’s not easy!"
"Yes, so...together?" Christopher asked tentatively.
"Together, let’s benefit from your presence," Sean laughed, "More people will make it easier to deal with any issues we might come across. At least it will scare off others!"
"That’s true. Of course, the national flag plays a big role too! We had two plans when we evacuated." Christopher, taking the lead, shared his experience with Sean, "When we crossed the border, we told them we were Chinese. We showed our national flag to the border guards.
At that time, I heard that their general had furthered his education in our country, so I thought we should be able to make it out. If not, we would go to the warship.
Unexpectedly, as soon as they saw our national flag and heard us speak a few words, they let us through."
Christopher’s face showed irrepressible pride.
Sean could empathize with that feeling.
It was like when the old master in South Africa was invited to the front row for a premium treatment on a bus after a nuclear explosion - when a nation becomes strong, the common people in the country may not experience it so clearly, but Chinese people abroad feel it the most.
"Would you come back in the future?" Sean asked.
"Of course." Christopher bitterly smiled, "I’ve invested most of my life in this place. I just hope the warring parties have a long-term perspective and think about how to develop after the war, instead of destroying our infrastructure. So, when we come back, some things may still be useful."
"Are you confident?" Sean asked again.
"About 60-70%. After all, everyone knows that the Chinese people working here are here for construction, common development. Those capitalists only think about zero-sum games and don’t understand win-win situations."
With that, Christopher waved his hand and said,
"Alright, we’ll continue our conversation when we camp. Join our convoy... take the rear, cover our backs, what do you think?"
"Sure. At least a few of our guys have served in the military, so covering the rear shouldn’t be a problem."
"Great!" Christopher’s eyes lit up, "I’m so happy. Although nothing has happened on the road, it’s been nerve-wracking as no one can guarantee there won’t be thieves around. With you joining, we’ll have added security!"
When Christopher heard that a few of them had served in the military, his smile became much more sincere.
It couldn’t be helped; for the Chinese people, the three words ’People’s Liberation Army’ had such a strong positive energy.
Especially during times of great disaster and calamity.
Otherwise, society wouldn’t have so many people hoaxing others under the banner of being a soldier. Many veterans even proclaim themselves as such after retirement and starting their own businesses.
The off-road vehicle and pickup truck joined the convoy, which continued to move forward.
Christopher explained the situation to the others in the cars through the walkie-talkie, and also mentioned that there were veterans in the newly joined cars, which reassured many people in the convoy.
However, the convoy stopped again after just over an hour.
One of the cars had broken down.
The convoy parked by the side of the road, with no repair shops in sight in this remote area.
Several people got out of the cars, some gathered around to watch, while others stretched their bodies.
Sean and his friends also came over to see if they could help.
"The tire blew out!" Someone immediately identified the problem.
"It’s not just the tire. The engine has problems too." The driver frowned, "I’m a newbie, I can’t diagnose any problems, I’ve never changed a tire before..."
Christopher came over, looked at the vehicle, and said:
"Let’s get everyone off the bus first and rest a bit, eat something. All drivers, come over and have a consultation to see how to fix this. After all, three shoemakers are worth one Zhuge Liang!"
Obviously, Christopher had some prestige. As he spoke, the drivers from all the cars gathered around.
The driver with the problem opened the hood, and a wave of heat surged out.
"Come, everyone, have a look." Christopher said, "By the way, this new guy is named Sean Knight. Come on, everyone, get acquainted. It’s fate that we met each other. When abroad, we Chinese people must unite.
