Chapter 1399: Chapter 679: Good People are Truly Rewarded!_3
After traveling several hundred kilometers, when the convoy was about to take a rest, Sean Knight’s sharp ears picked up a "bang," and the lead car suddenly swerved, and then made an S-turn, coming to a stop at the side of the road.
The tires had been blown out!
"It’s an ambush!" Sean Knight shouted into the walkie-talkie, and then the team members immediately grabbed their guns and jumped out of the cars!
Three burly Russian men had just scrambled up from underneath the carriage-way, guns in hand, intending to rob the convoy, when they were taken by surprise!
Sean Knight and his team were stunned too. Were there so many robbers?
The two groups were face to face, and the assailants, with bullets already in the chamber, had two of them shooting immediately, while the third, seeing the number of people, turned and ran!
"Shoot! These men have blood on their hands!" Sean Knight roared, his hand moved, and a pistol appeared, firing the first shot!
Then, with "bang bang crack crack" shooting sounds, the two men fired a couple of shots before they were riddled with bullets!
The one who fled into the forest only made it about twenty meters or so before he was caught by team members.
And then, he was pushed to the ground and dragged back.
Time for some questioning.
Viola acted as the translator while Lincoln Harrington conducted the interrogation, and soon enough, the scoundrel spilled everything he had done.
They had ambushed at least seven groups, killing seventeen people and raping three women, whom they killed after the act.
Not just Russians, but people from several other countries as well.
"Put him down," Sean Knight gestured dismissively, "He’s beyond redemption, full of evil deeds."
The team members found the bodies nearby—they had already started to decompose, some were left with only skeletal remains, gnawed on by animals.
They were not buried.
Burying these skeletons was akin to accumulating some virtue.
Sean Knight and his team continued on their journey, eventually arriving in Tomsk.
Tomsk is a state in Siberia, with its capital also named Tomsk, and it is one of the first six special economic zones in the Russian Federation, with a population of 600,000.
The friend that Peterof had spoken of was in Tomsk.
After resting in Tomsk for one day, Sean Knight and his team finally found Jack Kurya, Peterof’s friend.
Jack had received a phone call from Peterof a few days earlier, so when Sean Knight and his crew arrived, Jack was extremely hospitable.
"Peterof and I were comrades in arms on the battlefield, together we fought in Chechnya..." Jack took Sean Knight to an office in the city government’s building, had someone pour water for Sean, and then said:
"Back then, he took a bullet for me and had to leave the army due to his injuries. I ended up here."
Peter Smith sat down, crossed his legs, and said, "He called me, told me you did him a big favor, so his favor, he’s using it for you.
Tell me, young man, how can I help you?"
Before Sean Knight could reply, Jack added:
"Actually, we currently have policies here to attract investment. If you decide to invest, I can offer you the most favorable conditions..."
Sean Knight thought that this was finally getting to the point.
"So, if I invest, how much land can I get approved?" Sean Knight had Viola ask the most direct question.
He had brought two boxes of wine and quite a few things from China for Jack.
Initially, he hadn’t used money because he felt that since Peter Smith had a favor to call upon, he should at least see how much it was worth.
He was still not entirely sure yet.
"That depends on how far from the city you plan to invest," Jack pointed at a map on the wall and explained, "The closer to the city you are, the more expensive it will be, and the smaller the piece of land that can be approved.
The further from the city, and the more remote the area, the cheaper it gets and the larger the portion of land that can be approved."
"Then I’ll take a look around first," Sean Knight thought for a moment and said, "I’ll scout the nearby areas, and once I find a suitable place, I’ll come to visit you."
"No problem!" Jack said with a smile, "Feel free to come to me!"
Of course, he was happy, first to repay a favor, and second to attract investment—it was a double blessing.
Despite Russia’s vast natural resources, they’re valueless until they can be transformed into something useful.
Otherwise, what can a natural forest yield in a year?
Moreover, with the wars affecting their ability to export oil and gas, Russia’s economy, though it has profited from selling resources to other countries, cannot withstand such pressure.
Therefore, attracting investment is both a personal achievement and a political success.
Leaving the building, Elijah Hastings and Lincoln Harrington, who had quietly followed Sean Knight, were puzzled. Elijah asked:
"Boss, are we really going to look around?"
"We need to scout around; otherwise, how will we know what’s good?" Sean Knight said, "We need to find a place that’s relatively accessible, yet sparsely populated, with plenty of animals... at least suitable for building some facilities, and so on."
Sean Knight actually wanted to use his Sky Eye to see if there were any overlooked places nearby.
In essence, it was the principle of not unhooding the hawk until the rabbit is seen.
After all, although money came easily, it wasn’t free.
After reuniting with Douglas Cooper and spending two more days in the city, Sean Knight began touring the nearby areas.
Since they were primarily looking for a suitable site and resources, Sean Knight didn’t bring many people with him; some team members stayed behind.
With abundant educational resources and a high number of international students, Douglas Cooper found a translator among the Chinese international students for the remaining team members, and then the three of them accompanied Sean Knight as he explored the larger area.
It must be said that due to Russia’s expanse and sparse population, although the city’s infrastructure was decent, barely a dozen kilometers out of the city, it became virtually uninhabited.
Sean Knight and his team toured the vicinity, as if they were on a vacation.
However, Sean was anything but idle, he occasionally had Viola inquire about any ancient battlefields, old Russian barracks, or former mining areas nearby.
After all, it’s been several hundred years since Russia took over this area.
Who’s to say what treasures might have been left behind?
In less than three days, Sean Knight indeed discovered a treasure trove!
