Chapter 1259: Chapter 633: War, It Has Nothing to Do with Me
"Drive the Car away and change location," Sean Knight suddenly said to Elijah Hastings, who was preparing to get out of the car.
"Boss, what’s up? Is there something going on?" Elijah Hastings had planned to get out of the car and take a look, after all, this place was once the platoon leader’s haunt, and there might be traces left behind.
"There are followers nearby." As soon as Sean arrived, he activated Sky Eye and then noticed at least three groups of suspicious individuals watching this place.
Coming to the rescue was okay, but he couldn’t put his own people in jeopardy.
"Let’s go!" Elijah Hastings immediately said to Lincoln Harrington, "Leave here first and then we’ll talk!"
Lincoln Harrington had restarted the car while Sean was speaking, and immediately took a detour to drive away.
"Slow down. Later, when we turn the corner, drop me off," Sean said. "I want to see what these people following us are up to."
"People are following us?" Douglas Cooper was surprised from behind; he hadn’t noticed anyone or any car following.
"Quite far," Sean explained. "I’ll change my appearance, so they won’t suspect me. You guys continue on, and we’ll stay in touch by phone. Of course, it would be best if I were wrong."
Ahead was a forked road. As the car turned the corner, Sean quickly opened the car door and jumped out, then pulled up his hood to cover his face. When he took it down again, he had assumed a local’s countenance.
Three minutes later, a bicycle ridden by a child passed by.
After Sean got out, Lincoln and the others sped up and left the area. The child cycled around for a while but failed to find anyone, so he had to return to the ruins.
Sean also circled back to the vicinity of the ruins and discreetly activated Sky Eye to observe from a distance.
He noticed that the child had a companion; when the bicycling child returned, he whispered a few words to his mate, then continued on his bike in another direction.
The three groups watching the place were all very covert, and Sean didn’t know if they were aware of each other’s presence.
After hesitating for a while, Sean decided to follow the child.
This area was a civilian area, with more single-story houses than buildings. Sean followed the child through twists and turns to a Courtyard.
The small yard entered the Courtyard, didn’t come out for a long time, Sean opened up Sky Eye, and found that while there were quite a few people inside, there were no Chinese faces.
He noted the address and then returned to the ruins.
It wasn’t until night that Sean had figured out the identities of the other two groups of people.
Actually, one group was the local Violent Agencies, representing the Government.
The other group was a local armed gang. But this gang wasn’t of the underground kind, they were tacitly acknowledged by the government—at least they had a public office building, with personnel and weapons, and those people also wore military uniforms, but those lurking here were plainclothes to avoid attracting attention.
With three forces watching, Sean had to be cautious.
"Where are you now?" Sean called Captain Hastings.
"The boss, we’re just lingering nearby. Where are you? We’ll come to pick you up."
"That’s fine, get to the place where you dropped me off." Sean chose a location familiar to both sides. "I have something important to tell you."
Sean had disappeared for most of the day; without a doubt, he had made an important discovery.
Several minutes later, Sean entered the Car, and this time Douglas Cooper was driving.
"Here’s the situation. There are three groups monitoring the area. One of them is a government agency, people from a Semi-military Department. Another is a local violent gang, armed elements, and the last group consists of civilians, probably undercover agents from the opposing country lurking here," Sean relayed the situation, and the expressions on the faces of Elijah and the other two turned grave.
"So basically what we can confirm now is that your platoon leader, or rather the location he’s in, must have important intelligence, information, or goods; otherwise, these three groups wouldn’t be paying attention."
Sean continued to analyze:
"And from the current situation, what they’re looking for hasn’t been found yet, so they’re all still watching. Since they’re watching, there’s a high likelihood that your platoon leader and his men are still alive."
"As for the specific location, we probably need to find that out from these three groups."
After Sean went over the situation, the Car fell silent.
"Captain Hastings, should we continue searching?" Douglas reluctantly asked.
He was all too aware of how unpleasant his tone sounded as he spoke those words.
But it was something he had to say.
"If we’re going to rescue, the key might be tonight," Sean looked at the complex expression on Elijah’s face, thought for a moment, and made a decision for him:
"When those three groups are resting tonight or are fatigued, we’ll go look at the ruins, and I’ll also take you to see the civilian gathering areas. Let’s see what clues we can find."
"Okay," Elijah let out a sigh. "Since we’re here, let’s investigate first. We can’t just leave because it’s difficult—even if we can’t rescue them, we at least need to know why."
After deciding on the next plan, the Car drove to a secluded spot, and the four men used the self-heating food in their backpacks to address their hunger.
To avoid detection, all four rested in the Car until midnight.
"Let’s go, drive to the ruins," Sean initiated. "This time, you keep watch, and I’ll go down to search."
"Boss, let’s see how it goes. If they’re still keeping an eye out there, then we’ll stay in the Car. If they’ve pulled out or let their guard down, then we all go down," Elijah suggested.
