"It’s not that it’s less deep," Sean Knight corrected him, "the depth is the same, it’s just that the proportions on the online maps aren’t so exaggerated. If we were to scale it down, it would just be the shape of a shallow, large plate. Now this comparison is just to highlight its depth, that’s all."
After this analysis, everyone understood.
Still deep, but not as terrifying as the pictures online.
As soon as the golden mine issue was resolved, Sean took Elijah Hastings and the others away from Mongolia, heading for Lake Baikal.
In ancient China, Lake Baikal was called the North Sea, the place where Su Wu herded sheep. Sean initially did not believe there were ancient city ruins there.
After all, from ancient times to the present, it has always been a land of bitter cold; even the golden tents of the nomadic tribes were not usually built there, so how could a city possibly be constructed?
Of course, he had his doubts, but since Cheryl Suweton called him over and the distance wasn’t too far, Sean naturally didn’t decline.
Having not seen Cheryl in so long, Sean still had some faith in this sunny and cheerful Little Princess.
Lake Baikal was formed 25 million years ago by the collision of the Eurasian and Indian plates, initially as a saltwater lake. Geologists hypothesize that there used to be an open sea there, which later became a lake due to crustal movements, but the water remained salty.
Originally, many animals in the lake were marine creatures, accustomed to saltwater, but later, due to the continuous influx of freshwater from rivers, the water in the lake eventually became fresh, and the original marine creatures, such as seals and sharks, also grew accustomed to fresh water.
Of course, some geologists argue that these creatures originally lived here, and there’s no such thing as a transformation from marine life.
Anyway, it’s something from tens of millions of years ago, left for the experts to discuss.
This is an important fishing area in Russia, with numerous fish species inside.
The nearby residents are the Mongolian Buryat, after all, this is located within the territory of the Federal Republic of Buryatia of Russia.
Sean and his team, driving four cars, navigated to the location given by Cheryl and discovered a newly built campground by the lakeside.
Cheryl had been in constant phone contact with Sean and, seeing them arrive at the camp gate, immediately rushed over excitedly.
As soon as Sean got out of the car, Cheryl threw herself into his arms, looking up for a kiss.
Sean and Cheryl kissed, while Elijah Hastings and the others parked their cars at the camp entrance.
"Sorry, the camp can’t accommodate so many people," an abrupt voice said, and Sean and Cheryl separated to look towards the source of the voice.
The speaker was a tall, handsome white man wearing glasses, reminding Sean at first glance of a real-life Captain America.
Not at all effeminate, a bit scholarly, but also somewhat muscular.
His statement was directed at Elijah and the others who were carrying their backpacks intending to walk into the camp, but his eyes were fixed on Sean’s group.
"This is the team leader of the research team, James Vincent," Cheryl introduced to Sean, "the director of this expedition. My former company hired him for his rich experience. He became famous for discovering what was thought to be Atlantis relics."
Atlantis?
In the past, Sean might have doubted its existence, but now it was not so easy to say. After all, just the matter of energy alone was something modern science couldn’t explain well, so Sean didn’t doubt the man’s professionalism.
But his gaze was unfriendly, which made Sean somewhat uncomfortable.
After Cheryl whispered the introduction to Sean and was just about to explain to James, Sean loudly said:
"Elijah, let’s set up another camp nearby. There’s plenty of space here; a few extra camps won’t matter."
"Alrighty!" Elijah immediately led the others with their bags to scout the area, then started work less than fifty meters upwind from the original camp.
The Chinese military personnel, even when retired, have top-notch practical skills.
Clearing shrubbery, setting up tents, digging drainage ditches, installing iron wire mesh for protection, constructing smokeless stoves, designating garbage areas, and even drawing water from a nearby river source for everyone’s usage.
Both Cheryl and James were somewhat stunned watching their efficient operations.
"Let’s go for a walk along the lake and you can fill me in on the details," said Sean, ignoring James and pulling Cheryl away to start walking.
"I didn’t believe it at first either," Cheryl explained as they walked, "until I saw a video sent to me by that person. The video was from a local fisherman who’s also a live streamer, diving down to a certain area, where he discovered traces of man-made structures underwater, first a huge stone statue.
This statue was very large, about three to four meters high, carved very simply, in an ancient style. That’s when I believed it..."
As she spoke, Sean remembered that when he rescued his brother Oscar Knight, he’d gone to the Outer Northeast and encountered a huge stone array. That place didn’t seem like something ordinary people could construct.
Could there really have been a land of giants in ancient times?
"Where’s the video?" Sean asked.
"It’s in James’ possession," Cheryl replied. "He bought the video from the original owner for a large sum of money, then recruited the camp’s staff and experts with it. It’s also what drew me here."
"How far has the progress reached now?" Sean inquired further.
Now the two had reached the lakeside, but there was no way to go down.
The terrain was a sheer drop from where they stood to the water, about twenty to thirty meters below. To get down, Sean noted, they would need to walk a considerable distance.
"Why is the camp here?" Sean frowned, "Why not find a flat area where we could move directly down to the lake?"
"I’m not sure about that, we’d have to ask James," Cheryl shrugged, then swiftly changed the subject, "Dear, shall I come to your tent tonight?"
Sean looked at her and saw the longing in her eyes.
