Chapter 1175: 604
The inside was filled with dozens of sharpened reinforcing steel bars sticking upwards. Falling into that would mean sure death or severe injury.
After marking this trap, several people continued forward.
They had basically approached the range of the Surrounding Wall when Sean Knight and his team stopped.
Noises could still be heard from the Living Area, but they had subsided significantly. Now, only a handful of lamps remained lit.
Checking the time, Elijah Hastings exclaimed:
"These guys have some real stamina. They mined all day, and they’re still up causing a racket at this hour."
"Anyone still up and making noise at this time probably isn’t a miner," Sean guessed. "How could real miners have such energy?"
The two of them chatted like this, and the other two team members didn’t interrupt, just listening and observing their surroundings.
Lights were extinguished one by one until, aside from two lighting lamps hoisted to illuminate the entire area, the rest of the mining area darkened.
The whole area quieted down, the big iron door of the mining area was locked tight, and the shops outside had long since closed, with street vendors nowhere to be seen.
After waiting for over half an hour, Sean whispered:
"Let’s go, let’s take a look inside. I’ll take the lead."
"Boss, let me do it!" Elijah responded, "I have more experience. You just cover the rear."
With that, he walked forward with his silenced pistol in hand.
"Be careful, there’s a tripwire ahead," Sean couldn’t help but warn.
Elijah had already crouched down, carefully observing the tripwire and noticed that if disturbed, it would immediately pull a bunch of cans, making a noise.
The only option was to step over it.
They all carefully stepped over the tripwire, and then they saw an iron wire mesh.
Elijah took out his multifunctional dagger and combined it with the sword sheath to cut through the iron wire and squeeze through.
From there on, the path was essentially clear.
Noticing shallow, somewhat blurred footprints on the ground, Sean knew that someone would come to check, but not every day.
The night brought a wind that swept through, chillness striking in waves. The wind, laden with sand, stung their faces.
In such weather, those inside the houses were even less likely to come out.
After descending into the mining area, Sean and the others stuck close to the wall and headed straight for the Living Area – the only guards were in a booth at the Entrance, currently focusing on the area outside the big iron door.
Hearing their intermittent chatting, Sean knew these guards were relatively relaxed.
Probably because it had never happened, nor had they ever imagined someone might attack from the rear mountain, they were not vigilant in that direction.
The four of them reached the edge of the Small Building, and Elijah stopped, waiting for Sean’s command.
Sean kept his Sky Eye active, searching for Edward Shermer’s whereabouts.
The Mobile Board Room housed miners, several to a room, and most were sound asleep by now, with the occasional person on their Mobile Phone.
Two-story buildings housed Management staff, technicians, and a few unfamiliar faces.
There were indeed Japanese present!
Sean had already guessed the truth of the matter – these Japanese hadn’t dealt with him in Brazil or in Japan, so they had come to rob his home.
Heh!
However, he would let them live for another two days. After finding Edward, they would settle accounts.
Keeping Sky Eye active, he scanned from start to finish, until at last, in A Storage Room, Sean saw the narrow Spatial Realm where Edward was curled up lying on the Ground, covered with a thin carpet, tossing and turning now and then.
Looking at his face, Edward was unshaven and looked very haggard. Next to him was a small table with a dinner plate that still had leftover Food.
It seemed he was under house arrest.
Not too bad; at least he hadn’t betrayed them.
After thinking for a moment, Sean said:
"Let’s go to the back."
Edward’s Room had no windows, but the Room next to it did, which was an office.
Leading his men to the back of the building, he pointed to the window on the Second Floor:
"Go in through here. There should be no one inside. The very last house on the left outside – take a look inside."
Elijah immediately took a team member, used a human ladder, and climbed up.
The windows were locked from the inside, but this wasn’t a problem for them. Once inside, they silently entered the hallway.
Sean continued searching inside with his Sky Eye.
Then he saw in the last Storage Room, a vast safe. Inside the safe were gold bars, perfectly cast.
However, the golden bars weren’t numerous, just tens of kilograms.
He also spotted another safe in the Room where the Japanese were staying, storing tens of kilograms of golden bars.
Sean became somewhat suspicious and looked back at the hefty safe, noting signs of tampering on it, but due to its enormous size and heft, it had not been breached.
He roughly understood why Edward had been placed under soft detention.
A few minutes later, sounds came from upstairs, and when Sean looked up, he saw Elijah and the team member lowering Edward down.
Seeing Sean, Edward’s face showed a look of surprise. He was about to shout but then covered his mouth.
"Edward, there’s no need to say anything; I pretty much Understand what happened," Sean spoke softly:
"Later, our men will come and clean up this place. We’ll get you to a safe place first."
Edward breathed a sigh of relief, clearly exhausted.
Two team members helped Edward leave, with Sean in front and Elijah at the rear; they quickly retreated from the mining area.
"Alright, signal to Lincoln Harrington and Douglas to get our people over here," Sean said. "Split into two teams: one stays here to clean up, and another goes to In the Town to capture Antony Carter."
Sean knew that if they only focused here, Antony was likely to escape.
So, moving together was most appropriate.
Sean estimated that by the time Lincoln’s men arrived, it would be around 2 to 3 in the morning – the best time to act when everyone was in deep sleep. Next would be the capture.
He sent a team member to take Edward to the car, while Elijah sent the Signal to Lincoln and his team.
Wolf Clan howls could still be intermittently heard in the distance, but that did not affect Sean and his team’s mood.
The net was closing!
