Chapter 97: Chapter 4 Siege
"Knight Captain Hasimodo had set up the classic ’Eagle Wing Tactics’."
Most Knights were stationed on high ground on both flanks. The Ghouls could only charge uphill, which inevitably slowed them down due to the incline.
Each flank had a Knight equipped with a shotgun, a firearm with formidable close-range power that could easily knock back the slowed Ghouls.
The main source of lethality was the laser rifles, which sintered wounds at high temperatures, speeding up blood loss and death for the Ghouls.
Since attacking the high ground was not easy, the Ghouls, being creatures with basic hunting instincts, naturally chose to break through the narrow passage in the center of the flanks first, where Knight Langri was positioned.
Though Langri appeared isolated, he possessed the strongest weapon in the team—a flame sprayer. The super high-temperature flames generated by military fuel could quickly incinerate any target within three meters ahead.
The naturally fire-fearing Ghouls, when faced with this weapon, were nearly perfectly counteracted.
Thus, neither the ’wing’ direction of the high ground nor the ’beak’ direction of the flame sprayer were actually easy to breach.
If all went as expected, the Ghouls would first get damaged under the flame sprayer, then be forced to switch their attack to the flanks. As they climbed, they’d suffer significant losses and eventually be exterminated or flee.
This was the ideal situation.
Of course, given the significant disparity in numbers between enemies and allies, casualties were possible.
Hundreds of Ghouls charging the high ground couldn’t all be repelled by the shotgun; a Gatling gun might have a better chance.
However, the first mishap occurred immediately... The Ghouls didn’t attack the central narrow passage as Hasimodo had anticipated but instead made a wide arc toward the edge of the right high ground.
Hasimodo quickly looked that way and was shocked to his core—he saw two mercenary girls running frantically, with the Ghouls relentlessly pursuing them, closing the gap rapidly.
"Lorent, Roger! Overclocked Shooting, intercept!" Knight Captain reacted instantly, urgently commanding enhanced firepower on the right high ground.
Overclocked Shooting was a mode that increased the firing rate of laser rifles at the cost of accelerating their wear.
Indeed, under the sharply increased firing rate, about a dozen Ghouls couldn’t withstand the assault from the side and turned to fiercely pounce toward the right high ground.
However, for the massive army of Ghouls chasing the two mercenary girls, this was merely a trivial loss of forces.
"Aske! I’ll haunt you even as a ghost!!!" Medea’s furious scream echoed explosively through the Mind Channel, as the leading Ghoul almost caught up to her. Medea could even smell the nauseating stench of death behind her.
"Don’t be afraid," Aske responded, pulling the sniper rifle from his back—a weapon he had picked up during their last hunt for Fengkexim.
"Miel, get ready for staggered suppression," Aske kneeled on one knee, aiming the rifle ahead.
"Copy," Miel answered from the tree.
Rhythmic shooting sounds began to rise over the plains. Two sniper rifles—one from the tree, another from the ground—fired accurately and steadily.
Whenever a Ghoul was about to catch up to Medea and Thira, the next second its head would explode from a sniper shot, its body flung backward mid-air.
"Hasimodo, am I seeing this correctly? That’s staggered suppression!" a Night Watch Knight exclaimed over the channel.
Staggered suppression was a shooting tactic used by teams of marksmen.
Shots that hit induced rigidity in the enemy, causing their charge to falter or even be pushed back.
Therefore, when a large number of enemies charged at a sniper squad, the shooters needed to fire at targets progressively from nearby to far, regularly creating rigidity to suppress the overall speed of the enemy’s charge, preventing them from closing in quickly.
While this tactic might sound simple, it was incredibly challenging to execute.
The first issue was shooting accuracy; determining which enemy was closest in a brief moment and hitting them quickly was a true test of a marksman’s reflexes.
The second issue was coordination. For the staggered suppression, several marksmen needed to synchronize their shooting. However, a common problem was that two marksmen might almost simultaneously hit the same target.
This wasted an opportunity to create rigidity. Deciding which target would likely be shot by a teammate and which one to hit oneself required significant tacit understanding among the team.
What the Night Watch Knights saw at this moment was such an unbelievable scene.
The Ghouls, being Undead Spirits, lacked vital spots, making them hard to be killed instantly by a sniper rifle.
However, their method of attack included pouncing, briefly leaping into the air during the assault.
Once hit by a sniper rifle mid-jump, their entire body would be flung away by the bullet.
The army of Ghouls instantly caught up to the running girls, the closest one powering its hind legs, ferociously lunging at the girls’ backs.
In the moment it left the ground, its forward motion suddenly halted and then bizarrely flew backward.
As the second Ghoul passed beneath it, it roared viciously and leaped forward aggressively.
