Chapter 100: Chapter 6 Please Make a Mistake

"The ghouls on that highland have been dealt with," Jialwen looked toward the highland where Peggy and the others were, just in time to see Thira and Medea simultaneously strike, killing off the last ghoul.

He turned his head back and asked the Knight Captain for instructions, "Should we take action against these ghouls?"

Hasimodo fell into silence. Under normal circumstances, he wouldn’t have given it much thought and would have directly ordered the knights to go and exterminate them.

However, this time around, the original tactics had fallen through, and for some unknown reason, the ghoul army went mad and turned to attack the mercenaries following behind them.

(The Knight Captain did not yet know that the ghouls had turned around because of Medea’s use of Desire Manipulation)

Under normal circumstances, these mercenaries would have been surrounded and devoured by the ghouls, and the Night Watch Knights would naturally have had no psychological burden to step in and avenge the mercenaries.

After all, involvement in the Undead Mutant meant that casualties among you mercenaries were inevitable. It wasn’t the duty of the Night Watch Knights to protect you, was it?

However, this small Mercenary Group had not only not suffered any casualties, but had also managed to eliminate most of the ghouls on their own.

The remaining Corpse Ghosts were even corralled by them, used for training the two hand-to-hand combat warriors.

The other side had displayed such an obvious state of ease, and the Night Watch Knights, who hadn’t put in much effort, if they forcibly intervened now, it would simply be a flagrant disturbance.

Snatch monsters... Hasimodo lifted his head speechlessly. As an elite Night Watch Knight, it had always been them who stepped forward to slay the undead and rescue humanity from peril.

Since when had they fallen so low as to compete with external Mercenary Groups for monsters? When did these mercenaries outside becomes so strong? Are you all monsters?

"Let’s just watch for now," after a long silence, Hasimodo could only say awkwardly.

As Night Watchmen, destroying the undead in front of them was their sacred duty; but as elite Night Watchmen, their dignity made it impossible for them to stoop to such petty behaviors as monster snatching.

So what to do? Just stand by and watch!

"What are we watching?" Knight Lorent, who didn’t know how to read the room, asked cluelessly.

Hasimodo sighed and said,

"We watch to see if they make any mistakes. If there are any, then we will intervene and kill these Corpse Ghosts."

Oh, oh, oh, oh, the Night Watch Knights suddenly came to an understanding.

After all, it’s practical training, eh? If you make mistakes, then we Night Watch Knights will step in to save you, and by the way, exterminate these ghouls; it would then be completely justified.

Ten minutes later.

The Night Watch Knights, holding laser rifles, shotguns, and flame sprayers, watched Eleanor boredly as she continued to battle with the Corpse Ghosts.

Hurry up and make a mistake! Why haven’t you made a mistake yet! Ah, how frustrating!

"I’ve smashed it to death! Aske!" Sigrdrifa called out.

Aske lazily fired his gun, drawing another ghoul over for Sigrdrifa to practice with.

"Shall I also take a shot and draw these ghouls over?" Knight Roger said with a wry smile over the communication channel, "Then we can pretend we’re acting in self-defense and quickly exterminate these ghouls."

"And how would you explain firing your gun?" Hasimodo sighed and asked.

"Uh, what if it went off accidentally?"

"You, as an elite Night Watch Knight, would accidentally discharge your firearm with it in hand?" Hasimodo countered, "Don’t you think accidental discharge is an even more embarrassing situation?"

Knight Roger fell into an awkward silence.

Waiting another five minutes, Knight Roger couldn’t hold back and said again,

"I have another idea: I’ll get close pretending to watch, and take the opportunity to attract the ghouls."

"That could work," Hasimodo nodded. Standing too close and drawing ghouls to oneself was indeed an acceptable excuse.

After all, these undead monsters, like ghouls, have varying abilities among them, and if you claimed to have misjudged the scouting range of this particular ghoul, then that was also a plausible explanation.

So Knight Roger quietly moved forward, pretending to want a closer look, edging towards the direction of the ghoul group.

However, Eleanor performed a Two-stage Charge, leading the group of ghouls in the opposite direction.

Knight Roger stared, dumbfounded, and hurriedly moved a few steps forward.

Then Eleanor, with her back to him, delivered another 360-degree Iron Cutting, sending the ghouls flying even farther away.

Roger gritted his teeth and started running forward.

"Please halt, Knight Sir, over there!" Eleanor could only shout to warn him, "Be careful that these ghouls turn to attack you!"

I want them to attack me! Knight Roger cried internally.

Now that the other party had said so, if he insisted on moving forward, it would be clear that he was up to mischief.

Knight Roger could only stop sheepishly and cast a pleading look behind him.

The other Night Watch Knights all helplessly faced-palmed, wearing expressions of complete dismay and speechlessness.

"I think we should just be upfront about it," Knight Jialwen suggested, "Tell them, our creed as Night Watchmen is to destroy the undead, and before these ghouls are completely laid to rest, we can not turn and leave."

"No way!" Knight Captain Hasimodo immediately rejected, "Yes, the creed of the Night Watch is to eradicate the Undead Spirits. So let me ask you, who eliminated most of the Ghouls? Was it us, the Night Watch Knights?"

"As members of the Night Watch who failed to play a main role in this battle. The enemy defeated the majority of the Ghouls, and we have to ask them to yield the remaining stragglers. Who really are the Night Watch Knights here? And who are the mercenaries picking up leftovers behind?"

"No matter what you think, I, Hasimodo, cannot lower my face like that! Whoever speaks out is disrespecting the honor of Morning Star Team 3!"

Knight Jialwen turned his head in speechless frustration. Is this really a problem with us, the Night Watch? These foreign mercenaries were already very powerful, right? It’s all because you, Sir Knight Captain, underestimated them from the start, leading us to this awkward situation!

Of course, everyone present understood that it was only because Hasimodo had spoken too harshly too soon, adopting such a high-handed attitude that when they first met, he belittled the other party without merit.

In the end, the other party did not bother with him and merely flexed their muscles a little, preemptively killing the Ghoul horde right in front of the Night Watch Knights.

This made all of Hasimodo’s previous contempt and mockery turn into foolish, ignorant, and arrogant babbling.

Now wanting to communicate with the other party on an equal footing, the other Night Watch Knights might manage, but the Knight Captain was genuinely afraid the other party would not give him a way to step down gracefully.

If the other side would simply go "hmph" and casually say "You also fought well," given Hasimodo’s proud character, he might turn around and leap into the sea to drown himself.

Sigh. Jialwen sighed, turning his head only to see the other mercenary girls, who had been holding their strong positions, now coming over with laughter and chatter.

It seemed he had no choice but to use an indirect approach.

Knight Jialwen cast a surreptitious glance, scanning the faces of each of the mercenary girls.

A red-haired beauty, she seemed a little too cunning, pass.

A mysterious girl wearing a mask; covering her face means she doesn’t want to socialize, pass.

Two underage girls, I really don’t want to deal with brats, pass.

A fierce-looking pretty girl from the East? Better skip that for now.

A young woman with chestnut curly hair, those vestments... should be a nun, right? She would probably be easier to talk to.

Thus, Jialwen set his sights on Nora, approaching her with a hearty laugh:

"Hello, ladies, pardon the interruption."

"What can I do for you?" Seeing that he was addressing her, Nora also asked softly and politely.

"It’s like this..." Knight Jialwen explained the whole situation from beginning to end, and finally requested, "...so, we still hope you can help convey the message to your Squad Leader. After all, these are real Undead Spirits. Even just for practical training, it’s quite dangerous for you."

The girls exchanged looks; they hadn’t expected Aske to dare use a horde of Ghouls as practice targets for Eleanor and Sigrdrifa. From Jialwen’s tone, it seemed this also gave the Night Watch Knights quite a headache.

"Heh." Before Nora could speak, Peggy scoffed with a disdainful "I knew this would happen" expression, laughing coldly, "Aren’t all of you Night Watch Knights supposed to be elites? How could you let so many Ghouls slip through to the rear? After we’ve almost finished killing the Undead Spirits, you come out to meddle and pick up the scraps, isn’t that inappropriate?"

Damn it... Tears streamed down Jialwen’s face. Sir Knight Captain, why do I have to bear these jeers and mockeries that you’ve brought upon us?

"Aw, come on, Sister Peggy, don’t be like that," Mia also giggled with her eyes narrowed, the little girl held grudges as well, "The Knight who brought us in said it’s in a hyena’s nature to scavenge behind the lion, and you can’t chase them away, right?"

"Alright, both of you cut it out," Nora scolded with a frown, which eased Jialwen’s embarrassed expression somewhat.

"This matter is indeed our fault as Night Watch Knights," Jialwen sincerely said, "I apologize for the previous thoughtless comments made by the Knight Captain. However, there are still Undead Monsters in this area that haven’t been completely eradicated and we must collaborate to tackle them."

"Yes," Nora nodded, responding, "I’ll talk to Aske about it."

"That’s great." Jialwen breathed a sigh of relief, feeling a touch of unexpected emotion.

This nun is truly kind-hearted! So understanding!

Over the radio, after Nora relayed Jialwen’s words, Aske agreed saying:

"Alright. Sigrdrifa, quickly finish off the Ghouls at hand, then go support Eleanor. We’re finishing up the training."

"What, I haven’t had enough yet," Sigrdrifa complained verbally, but with one swing of her Axe, she killed the Ghoul.

Then she dashed towards Eleanor, where less than ten Ghouls still remained, futilely and stubbornly assaulting Miss Knight.

With her Long Spear piercing through the last Ghoul’s skull, Eleanor breathed a sigh of relief and pulled the spear tip out of the half-rotted corpse.

"I feel like I still haven’t practiced enough," she said over the radio to Aske, "Either in positioning or selecting my spot, there’s much room for improvement. Could the regular training regimen include added practice for this?"

"No way around it, you’ll have to learn through real combat," Aske replied.

In offline settings, professional clubs would have their own simulation programs (akin to private servers) that can spawn endless monsters at the press of a button, which is very convenient.

But in this world, you have to run more instances.

After all, the awareness of positioning and spot selection must be developed under the extreme pressure of facing multiple opponents at once. In one-on-one combat, positioning has too much room to be exploited to effectively improve.

"Take a quick rest; we’re preparing to fight the BOSS," Aske gathered the group of girls and announced.

"Ah, there’s a BOSS, too?" The girls eagerly exclaimed.

"Of course, there’s a BOSS after the minions!" Aske said as if it was obvious.

Seeing the Ghouls had been wiped out, the Night Watch Knights also breathed a sigh of relief.

Thus, the area’s Death Spirits were considered cleared, and Morning Star Team 3 could return to its station.

They hadn’t made much of an effort, but they hadn’t lost any members, which was truly a relief.
