Chapter 1700: Chapter 1694: Strategy
"I got it, big brother. Don’t you think this kid is a little different from other kids?" The man called Big Head asked the tall man.
"Maybe he’s just scared stiff. Don’t worry about it. He’s so small, what could he possibly do? If he tries to run, we’d catch up to him in a few steps. Kids like him aren’t any different. Stop overthinking it. Hurry up and get him something to eat. Poor kid held out until now before saying he was hungry." The tall man glanced at Yu Ze. For someone so little to last this long, he really had some backbone.
What they didn’t know was that Yu Ze came from a family of military descendants. Had they known, they might’ve thought twice about their actions.
"Hey, kid, here’s something to eat." Big Head handed a piece of flatbread to Yu Ze.
"Thank you, Uncle." Yu Ze wasn’t picky about food at the moment. Anything to fill his stomach was good enough. Even if the flatbread was a bit hard, he had to eat it, otherwise, he’d have no strength left.
"Oh? Polite little fella, aren’t you?" Big Head hadn’t expected such a tiny kid to be so well-mannered. If it weren’t for needing to draw Silver Wolf out, they wouldn’t have even considered bringing the child in. They were bad men, but not bad enough to harm kids—yet.
"Uncle is nice too." Yu Ze took a bite of the flatbread. It was tough, almost enough to break his few baby teeth.
"Kid, sweet-talking won’t help you. You’ve just got bad luck, that’s all. Don’t blame us for being ruthless—we’re just trying to get by." Big Head felt a pang of guilt as he looked at Yu Ze and muttered softly.
"Mm, I don’t blame you. But, Uncle, you’re so kind. Why don’t you try being a good person? Your grandma’s probably at home waiting for you to come back for dinner, right?
My grandma’s waiting for me at home too, but now I’m here because of you. How about coming home with me for dinner when you have time? My grandma’s cooking is delicious." Yu Ze looked at Big Head, noticing a flicker of struggle in his eyes. It seemed this man’s conscience wasn’t entirely dead.
Yu Ze hoped his words could soften the man’s heart. Whether it would work, he didn’t know. He just wished Big Head wouldn’t stray further down the wrong path. They hadn’t done much harm yet, and Yu Ze had voluntarily followed them. But if things dragged on or if they crossed a dangerous line, their crimes would escalate.
"Thank you, kiddo. If I ever have the chance, I promise to come and eat at your place. But for now, you need to behave, alright?" Big Head stared into Yu Ze’s clean, bright eyes as he gently warned the boy not to do anything reckless. If anyone were to get hurt, it’d likely be Yu Ze himself, since the others wouldn’t be as lenient as him.
"Mm, I understand, Uncle. Thank you, you’re really nice." Yu Ze was taken aback, surprised to hear Big Head offering him advice. It seemed there was still hope for him. Yu Ze vowed to help Big Head find his way back to the right path if given the chance.
"Big Head, what are you dawdling over there for? Come and eat, then take the night watch. If Silver Wolf shows up and we miss it, we’re screwed." The tall man called out to Big Head, noticing he was still lingering by the child.
They hurriedly ate, rotating shifts to keep watch through the night. Silver Wolf was not someone to be trifled with. When they took the child, they deliberately spread word, demanding Silver Wolf come alone to rescue him.
This was their best shot at taking down Silver Wolf. He kept ruining their plans, time and time again, and it was driving them mad.
"Big brother, I’m coming now," Big Head responded to the tall man before glancing at Yu Ze once more. Despite his hesitations, he was just a subordinate. No matter how much he may feel reluctant, he could only obey orders in the end.
