Chapter 32: Deceptions

The meeting ended, and Diane excused herself.

Selling her time to the highest bidder? It felt absurd, yet she knew her father’s mind was set.

She needed a strategy—a way to use the event to her advantage without compromising herself.

As she made her way to her car, she spotted Rachel waiting by the exit.

Diane didn’t pause to acknowledge her, but she felt Rachel’s eyes boring into her back.

Later that evening, Leon walked into the dining room of a five-star hotel.

Rachel was already seated, dressed in an elegant, figure-hugging red dress.

Some weird smile spread across her lips as she stood to greet him.

"Leon, darling," she purred, leaning in to kiss his cheek.

"I thought it would be lovely for us to spend some quality time together. Just us."

Leon offered a thin smile, taking his seat across from her.

"It’s rare to see you so... accommodating, Rachel. What’s the occasion?"

"Do I need a reason to spend time with my husband? I’ve missed you."

Leon didn’t respond immediately, instead motioned to the waiter to bring the wine.

Once their glasses were filled, he sipped his drink slowly, observing her.

"How’s Arthur?" Leon asked suddenly and casually.

Rachel hesitated, but only for a split second.

"He’s doing well. I visited him this morning."

Leon raised an eyebrow. "Is that so? And how was he?"

Rachel’s fingers tightened around her wine glass, but she maintained her composure.

"He looked fine... healthier than before. He even seemed like he might start talking soon. The doctors said his mutism from shock should end soon enough."

Leon’s lips curved into a smile, but it was far from warm.

It was a small, satisfied smirk, the kind that showed danger.

"That’s interesting," he said, leaning back in his chair.

"Because Arthur has been with Diane for quite some time now. He was discharged from the hospital weeks ago."

The color drained from Rachel’s face, and for a moment, her mask slipped.

She quickly recovered, forcing a laugh. "Oh, Leon, you must be mistaken. I saw him—"

Leon cut her off, sounding like steel.

"Enough. Don’t insult my intelligence, Rachel. You’ve never cared about Arthur, have you?"

Her eyes widened, and she reached across the table, placing her hand over his.

"Leon, that’s not true. He’s my son. I love him."

"Do you?" Leon asked.

"Y-yes."

"Because if you did, you wouldn’t have lied just now. You’ve barely shown interest in him since he was born. Diane has done more for him in a few days than you have his entire life."

Rachel’s lips trembled, but she had to find a way to somehow turn the situation to her advantage.

"Leon, please. You don’t understand. I’ve been trying to give him space to heal. I didn’t want to overwhelm him."

Leon chuckled darkly.

"Spare me your excuses. Do you know what I see when I look at you, Rachel? A woman who’s only ever cared about herself. You’ve spent years manipulating everyone around you, and I’ve been blind to it. But not anymore."

Rachel’s eyes filled with crocodile tears.

"Leon, you’re being unfair. I’ve been by your side through everything. I’ve supported you, loved you—"

"And stolen from me," Leon interrupted coldly. "Do you think I don’t know about the assets you siphoned away behind my back? Half of what I’ve built is tied up in your schemes."

Rachel’s tears stopped as quickly as they had started.

Her jaw hardened, innocence was slipping away entirely.

"Careful, Leon," she said in a low voice. "You wouldn’t want to make an enemy of me."

Leon met her stare as calmly as possible.

"Consider this a warning, Rachel. You may have fooled me for years, but those days are over. I’ll regain what you took from me, piece by piece, and when I do, you’ll have nothing left."

Rachel leaned back, her lips formed a sly smile.

"Oh, Leon. You talk as though you have the upper hand. But remember, my dear husband, in this game, it’s the one who strikes first that wins."

Leon gritted his teeth, but he didn’t respond.

Instead, he finished his wine and stood up.

"Enjoy your dinner, Rachel. I have more important matters to attend to."

As he walked away, Rachel was left alone at the table.

Her carefully constructed act had cracked, but she wasn’t out of the game yet.

If Leon wanted to play, she’d make sure it was a game he couldn’t win.

"I know you the best, my dear husband...you will not leave me, not when I have Arthur on my side."

She bit her thumb.

"That stupid Richard, couldn’t keep Diane in place, and now I have to clean this mess."

Meanwhile, Diane was in her office, poring over the details of the charity gala.

She kept drifting to Gabriel, to the auction, to the people who would be there—Rachel, Evelyn, perhaps even Adrian.

The stakes were higher than ever, and she knew she couldn’t afford a single misstep.

She glanced at her phone, debating whether to call Gabriel.

But the memory of his icy words still stung, and she hesitated.

Eventually, she was interrupted by a knock at the door.

It was her assistant, carrying a stack of papers.

"Mrs. Frost, these are the finalised guest lists and auction details you requested."

Diane took the papers with a nod. "Thank you. That will be all."

As she flipped through the documents, she couldn’t stop thinking of the possibilities.

The gala wasn’t just a fundraiser—it was an opportunity.

And if there was one thing Diane knew how to do, it was turn an opportunity into a weapon.

"Let them bid," she muttered to herself.

As she was about to leave to see Gabriel, she inhaled more air.

’What exactly did he remember?’ She thought to herself, and walked outside.

The driver soon enough took her to Gabriel’s clinic.

’As white as always...’

"Hi, is my husband here?"

"Yes, Mrs. Frost. He’s in his office."

’At least the receptionist is nice...’

Diane made her way, knocked on the door, but no one was answering.

She decided to let herself in, ’here it comes...’

The light from the hall filled Gabriel’s office, and made Diange gasp and drop your purse to the ground.

"Ga-Gabriel?"
