Chapter 33: Gabriel And Evelyn???
Evelyn had her arms looped around Gabriel’s neck, leaning in with a syrupy smile that would have melted most men.
But Diane wasn’t most people, and she wasn’t about to flinch at the sight.
She stopped in the doorway, picking up her bag, looking at both of them with a commanding stare enough to freeze both of them in place.
"Am I interrupting something?" Diane asked coolly, as if she had just stumbled upon a meeting rather than the scene before her.
Evelyn spun around, pretending to be surprised with a dramatic gasp.
She stepped back from Gabriel, her hands flew to her chest as though Diane’s arrival had startled her.
"Oh! Diane, I didn’t hear you knock."
Diane lifted her head, her lips curving into an almost predatory smile.
"That’s because I didn’t," Diane lied.
"Diane," Gabriel called sharply. "You shouldn’t be here."
Unbothered, Diane stepped inside, letting the door close softly behind her.
She looked at Evelyn, who was still trying to compose herself, to Gabriel, who looked as though her presence alone was a personal enemy.
"I’m sorry, am I intruding on a private moment?" Diane asked them with a mocking politeness.
She bent down to remove some dust from her thigh, "I thought we could have a conversation, Gabriel. About important matters."
"There’s nothing to talk about," he said flatly, dismissing her with a wave of his hand.
Evelyn, pleased by Gabriel’s hostility, smirked.
"It seems like bad timing, Diane. Gabriel and I were just... catching up."
Diane looked at Evelyn’s with the stare of a sniper.
"Catching up? Is that what you’re calling it these days?"
She took a small step forward. "How strange..."
Evelyn bristled but quickly smoothed her expression into something resembling pity.
"I suppose it’s natural to feel... insecure, given everything that’s happened between you two. But Gabriel and I—well, we go way back. Don’t we, darling?"
Gabriel didn’t respond, narrowing his eyes as he looked at Diane, who stared back at him without blinking.
"Insecure?" Diane repeated, arching an eyebrow.
N"Oh, Evelyn, darling. If I ever felt insecure, you’d be the last person I’d tell."
She turned her attention to Gabriel.
"Now, are you going to continue letting her play dress-up in your office, or will you actually give me the courtesy of five minutes?"
Gabriel leaned back against his desk, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Why are you here, Diane? To cause a scene?"
"A scene?" Diane let out a soft laugh. "I think you’ve already taken care of that."
She pointed at Evelyn with her head.
Gabriel exhaled sharply, his patience started fraying.
"Whatever it is you want to discuss, it can wait. This isn’t the time or place."
"Oh, I think it is," Diane countered, stepping closer.
"But if you insist, we can talk outside. That is, unless Evelyn here plans to tag along."
Evelyn opened her mouth to respond, but Gabriel cut her off. "Evelyn, leave us."
The color drained from Evelyn’s face. "Gabriel, I—"
"Now," his tone didn’t allow any more argument.
Evelyn hesitated, her hands balling into fists at her sides, but she plastered on a sugary smile for Diane.
"Of course. Don’t keep him too long, Diane. He has better things to do."
As Evelyn walked past Diane, she muttered under her breath, "I didn’t mean to...Gabriel is after me."
Diane smiled faintly, not even bothering to turn her head.
"Quite predictable."
The door closed with a soft click, leaving Diane and Gabriel alone.
"Well?" Gabriel asked, "What do you want?"
Diane studied him for a moment, not changing her expression.
"We need to talk about us," she said finally.
Gabriel’s shoulders tensed at the mention of the word, ’us.’
"You see, my dear wife, a day before, this could’ve been possible, but now...when I know the kind of snake you are. I just don’t wanna deal with you anymore."
"You didn’t even let me explain, Gabriel."
"Explain what? That you are planning to steal all my money and leave me broke?" He raised an eyebrow.
"I’m not planning this, matter of fact,I want to help you."
A loud chuckle escaped Gabriel’s lips, "help me?" He raised his voice. "You want to help me?" He repeated himself.
"Yes. I made some mistakes that I want to fix, and I’ll do my best to make sure it won’t happen again."
Gabriel looked at her for some time, not being able to believe her.
"Diane, do you know what I did in my previous life after you took everything from me?"
Diane gulped, but continued looking into his eyes, "I’m sorry...I was naive, and manipulated by Adrian-"
Gabriel slammed the table with his hand, loudly enough that the sound echoed in the hall.
Diane flinched a little bit.
The green eyes that were beautifully shining in the dark looked like a lion’s, ready to eat her.
"I wanted to kill myself..." Gabriel muttered under his breath.
"Wh-what?"
Hearing this directly from Gabriel made Diane’s stomach twist in circles. He was gigantic, with broad shoulders, commanding, and yet...so vulnerable right now...
"I wanted to kill myself not because of the money that I’ve lost, but because I was betrayed by you..."
"Gabriel, I didn’t mean to-"
"Be quiet, Diane. I’m not finished."
Diane looked at him gently, "then continue."
"In my past life, I loved you...I really wanted to be with you, to protect you, to have children with you, but you left me with nothing in my wallet. It was empty."
"I had no choice...I was fooled by this so called ’family.’"
"It doesn’t matter to me whether you were fooled or manipulated in your past life, my dear wife. Because look at this, your new life...hahaha..."
Gabriel ran his hand through his hair, and continued laughing hysterically.
"In this life, you went to my cousin, my fucking enemy to ask for his help!" Gabriel shouted.
"I didn’t know where else should I go...my father, he was-"
"Me! Diane! You should’ve come to me! Your husband!"
"Are you disappointed?"
"Yes..."
"Will you let me divorce you then?" Diane asked while tears covered her eyes.
"I will think about it."
"If you don’t trust me in this life, and you think I will betray you, then grant me a divorce, and then let’s be over each other...forever..."
"You know what, Diane? No."
