Chapter 31: They Will Bid

"Stay away from me! You thief! I remember everything...yo-you...."

"Gabriel, please, let me explain—" Diane reached out, but Gabriel shoved her hand away.

"Explain? There’s nothing to explain." His voice was so icy, each word felt like a dagger.

Without another glance, he turned on his heel and went to his car.

"Gabriel, wait!" Diane called.

But her pleas fell on deaf ears.

He slammed the car door shut, the engine roared to life, and within moments, he was gone, leaving a cloud of dust in his wake.

Micha, who had been observing the scene with keen interest, sauntered over, a grin appeared on his lips.

"Trouble in paradise, rabbit?"

Diane gave him a withering look.

"This is none of your concern, Micha."

"Oh, but it seems quite the spectacle. Care to share what’s got dear Gabriel so riled up?"

"I said, it’s none of your business." Diane left no room for argument.

Micha raised his hands as if he was surrendering.

"Alright, alright. No need to get feisty. Just thought we could... collaborate further."

"Our business is concluded. Now, if you’ll excuse me." Diane turned sharply, heading back to her house.

Once inside, she locked the door behind her, leaning against it as she tried to steady her heavily racing heart.

She needed time to think, to plan...

Without another thought, she ascended the stairs to Gabriel’s room, locking herself in and letting the silence envelop her.

’Gabriel couldn’t possibly remember the past...how?’ Her lower lip trembled, she bit it gently.

The next morning, Diane sat up in bed, her eyes felt heavy from a restless night.

The space beside her was cold and untouched; Gabriel hadn’t returned.

Pushing aside her worries, she dressed, choosing a navy dress that showed authority and elegance.

In the kitchen, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee was offered by the machine.

She poured herself a cup, savoring the warmth as it spread through her.

Her Birkin bag sat on the counter.

She placed her essentials inside, "I will go to him after work..."

Before leaving, she found Riot in the living room, playing with Arthur.

"Riot," she began, looking at both of them, "I need you to look after Arthur today. Ensure he stays here."

Riot looked up, shaking his head a little.

"Is everything alright, Diane?"

She offered a tight-lipped smile. "Just some business to attend to. I’ll be back later."

With that, she stepped out.

Upon arriving, she was greeted by the usual nods and murmurs of "Good morning, Mrs. Frost."

As she approached her office, Rachel was there with her perfectly coiffed hair and a smile that never reached her eyes.

"Diane, darling," Rachel purred, "I was hoping we’d have a moment to chat."

Diane’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Rachel. To what do I owe the pleasure?"

"Oh, just some minor concerns about the upcoming charity gala. I noticed you made some changes to the guest list."

"Yes, I did. Some of the previous attendees were... unsuitable."

Rachel’s smile tightened. "Those ’unsuitable’ attendees are significant donors."

"Donors with questionable ethics. I won’t have this family’s name associated with them."

"Is that so?" Rachel’s tone turned icy. "You seem to forget your place, Diane. Decisions like these should be discussed."

Diane took a step closer.

"And you seem to forget, Rachel, that I am the Hoffmans’ heir. I make decisions for this family now."

Rachel’s eyes flashed with anger.

"Don’t think for a moment that your lineage grants you absolute power. Remember who brought you into this world."

A bitter smile tugged at Diane’s lips.

"Oh, I remember quite well. And I also remember who tried to sell this company for their own gain."

Rachel’s face paled ever so slightly, but she quickly regained her composure.

"Careful, Diane. Accusations without proof can be dangerous."

"I don’t need proof when I have memories." Diane’s voice was colder this time.

The two women stood in tense silence.

Finally, Rachel broke the stare, adjusting her purse.

"Very well. But remember, dear, in this world-"

"God-mother," a smooth, young voice called for Rachel.

’Finally...’ Diane could recognise the voice even from hell...after all, she was the one who helped her to be reborn.

"Evelyn! What a surprise...what are you doing here?"

"I got a job! I’m so excited! I didn’t know you were the owner of this company."

"Well, Leon is my husband, so that makes me a-"

"She’s not," Diane cut her off and turned around.

Evelyn raised an eyebrow.

"And you are?"

"Leon Hoffman’s daughter, Diane. I’m also Gabriel Frost’s wife," Diane introduced herself without missing an eye contact.

"Oh-hahahaha!" Evelyn shifted uncomfortably.

’You will try to befriend me, be my best friend, act as if you care, and then help Adrian kill me...’

"I hope you will like working here. We have a strike policy to people who are late and irresponsible, I hope you’re nothing like that?"

"Of-of course, not..." Evelyn stuttered.

"Good."

"Diane, are you-?"

"I’m busy," Diane didn’t even let Rachel finish what she wanted to say. "Me and father have a business meeting to attend; so, if you please?"

Diane walked past Rachel.

’Not in this life...none of you...’

"So, it’s her?" Evelyn gritted her teeth, "the woman all men are suddenly obsessed with." She bit her thumb.

"Yes. You need to act quickly, and make Gabriel divorce her. I will turn Leon against Diane by myself. We need her to have nothing when we push her down."

"This should be so easy...after all, I’m Gabriel’s taste."

Both women grinned, and smirked, not knowing that the whole idea would be soon crumbled by Diane herself.

"Two blind donkeys are leading the wolf..." Diane smiled as she entered the office where the meeting was going to take place.

"I’m sorry for being late, we had a problem in our department."

"No, please, mrs. Frost. It’s our pleasure to be here even if you’re late." An old business man with a short mustache spoke.

"So, as you know, my daughter will be in charge of this event, and we will have Gabriel Frost attending also."

"Wait, what?" Diane turned to Leon.

"I sent him an invitation, he will be attending also."

’In my past life, Richard and Adrian were also there, while Gabriel left me alone at home. If I could use this opportunity to get closer to Gabriel, and-’

"Diane, are you okay?"

"Ye-yes, father...I was just thinking of a grand entrance. We need all eyes to be on this event."

"And that’s why; we have you, my dear daughter. We will run an auction to fund the cancer patient."

"Auction?" Diane raised an eyebrow.

"Yes...my secretary suggested that if we sell your time with people, we could gain a lot of money for funds, without needing to involve the investors."

"And what is that exactly?"

"Bids. The highest bidder will get to spend time with you."

’Crap!’
