Chapter 499 - 501 Arrival at the Witch Tribe

Chapter 499: Chapter 501 Arrival at the Witch Tribe

A few people rested for the night in the post house, and they continued their travels the next day.

Three days later, they finally reached the northernmost part of the Southern Frontier, which bordered West Ridge Country.

Having found an inn, they settled in, the Man in Black Robe no longer wore his black robe but had switched to green clothes.

The Southern Frontier was a very unique existence, under the jurisdiction of the West Ridge Country, yet independent from its control.

Although the people of the Southern Frontier lived there, they never obeyed the Imperial Court’s administration and would even resist it.

Every year, the Imperial Court sent troops to subdue the Southern Frontier, but they never gained any advantage.

"Now that we have arrived at the Southern Frontier, what else do you need me to do?" Shao He stopped the Man in Black Robe and asked.

This wasn’t their territory after all; whether acting or speaking, they had to be extra cautious, and it was an uncomfortable feeling.

"Come with me to a place tomorrow." After saying this, the Man in Black Robe entered the adjoining room with a woman.

Although Pei Huaian and Shao He were worried, they had no other choice but to follow the instructions of the Man in Black Robe, having come this far.

It was Shao He’s first trip outside the Great Yao Kingdom, and he couldn’t help being curious. After getting permission from the Man in Black Robe, the two left the inn.

"Why do you think he brought us to the Southern Frontier?" Shao He looked around to make sure no spies had followed them before he spoke.

"Now that we’re here, just be more careful from now on," Pei Huaian reminded him.

The Southern Frontier was vastly different from the Great Yao Kingdom, whether it was the local customs, the street food, or even the way people looked at them.

After a brief wander through the streets, the two returned to the inn.

The next day, before dawn had even broken, someone knocked on their door. The Man in Black Robe led them out to a valley.

Upon entering the valley, they could sense the air thick with the noxious miasma that would be too much for ordinary people to withstand.

"What is this place?" Shao He covered his nose; the place appeared beautiful, yet danger lurked everywhere.

"This is the home of the Witch tribe of the Southern Frontier. We live in the valleys surrounded by dense forests, and the whole area is shrouded in miasma that ordinary people dare not approach because the slightest carelessness could cost them their lives."

Shao He stopped in his tracks, surprised to have been brought directly into their lair.

At that moment, a conversation could be heard from within the valley.

"Brother, we can’t go on like this."

"What should we do then?"

"Why don’t we sneak out at night and come back during the day? That way no one will know."

"Isn’t that improper? Master has instructed us..."

"Stop talking. It’s decided!"

The two turned around to leave, and right at that moment, they bumped into the Man in Black Robe entering the valley.

Seeing him, the two obviously flinched, then offered a reluctant smile and said, "Great Elder? What are you doing here?"

"Why can’t I be here, unless you’ve been doing something dishonorable?" The Man in Black Robe said mockingly.

"No, no!" the two shook their hands frantically in denial.

The cold gaze of the Man in Black Robe passed over them, "Go see the Second Elder for your punishment."

The two could only leave with a sigh.

After they had left, the Man in Black Robe then led them further deep into the valley.

"Did you hear anything?" Shao He listened carefully, the area seemed alive with the sounds of insects and birds.

"Heard it," Pei Huaian also listened intently.

"There seem to be a lot of animals here," Pei Huaian pondered for a moment, then spoke leisurely.

They were now deep in the valley, surrounded by dense trees, not far in front of them stood a high platform, beside which stood a man in a black robe.

He stood with his back to them, hands behind him, quietly watching the distance as if he disregarded the whole world.

"Who is that man, and why do they always prefer to wear black clothes?" Shao He murmured softly.

"That’s the Third Elder, is he observing the celestial phenomena again?" the Man in Black Robe said indifferently with a nod.

"Observing celestial phenomena? Does that mean he can predict the future?" Shao He asked in surprise.

"Certainly not," the Man in Black Robe shook his head in denial, "This Third Elder specializes in divination, observing the sky at night."

"That’s amazing!" Shao He, who had heard of such abilities to conjecture the future from the heavenly signs, had never witnessed it firsthand.

The Man in Black Robe nodded but didn’t continue, as the Third Elder had turned to look in their direction, and they needed to remain quiet.

The Third Elder walked slowly to the other end of the platform and sat down, gazing up at the blue sky as if he had entered a particular trance.

The Man in Black Robe glanced at the Third Elder and hurriedly led Shao He and the others away.

About a period of time later, they finally arrived at their lodgings, where the Man in Black Robe settled them in before leaving.

"Why has he brought us here? What exactly is he trying to do?" Shao He couldn’t help but ask after the Man in Black Robe had left.

Pei Huaian knitted his brows, "I don’t know, let’s just stay put for now!"

After speaking, he opened the window to look out. There was a creek outside, and opposite the house was a forest, its tall trees blocking the sunlight.

This caused the area to have a gloomy atmosphere, with hardly any sunlight penetrating.

"Master, I’ve heard that the Witch tribe of the Southern Frontier are skilled at using Gu Poison, and the Gu insects they rear are formidable," An Shi had also heard of the Witch tribe.

This place isn’t under the control of the Southern Frontier, but they would not harm people without cause, nor would they allow just anyone to come and go.
