Chapter 490: Chapter 492: Turning Defeat into Victory
Ah Er looked at Pei Huaian with a malevolent grin, "Today, I will ensure your journey is one-way, to be buried in this sea of fire!"
"You beasts! The children here are innocent!" Pei Huaian roared in anger.
His expression was sinister as he glared at Ah Er, wishing he could personally slaughter this vile creature.
Ah Er snorted coldly, "You like killing, don’t you? I’d like to see who will slaughter whom tonight!"
"Keep firing!" At Ah Er’s command, a dense rain of arrows flew over.
"Retreat quickly!" Pei Huaian shouted.
Everyone scattered, but there was nowhere to hide in the courtyard, and the raging fire hindered their escape.
The flames licked the entire house as the rich smell of roasting meat spread, and the crying of children echoed through the village. A villager couldn’t stand it and stopped shooting.
Ah Er pierced his body with a single sword thrust. After pulling out the long sword, he wiped it off lightly and shook his head, "Tsk, tsk, tsk, how dare you defy my command? Don’t forget that your families are still in my hands. Do you really wish to swap your lives and those of your families for these children’s lives?"
The other villagers began to fear, glanced at the crying children, and ultimately, clenching their teeth, they closed their eyes and continued to shoot.
The village chief desperately shouted, "Ah Er, don’t continue in your delusion. If this continues, not only will you harm yourself, but you’ll also implicate everyone in the village."
The village chief’s advice was completely useless to Ah Er.
The fire kept spreading, and Ah Er was visibly thrilled.
Pei Huaian and Pei Hanze were dodging about with the children. Many soldiers sacrificed themselves to protect the children, their bodies still tightly shielding the kids underneath them.
"This won’t do," Pei Hanze, choked by the smoke, began to cough violently. If this continued, they would probably all perish in the fire. They had to break out.
"We’re breaking out."
Pei Huaian looked again at the children beside him, squatted down, and as he touched their heads, he said, "Stay here and don’t move. We’ll be back soon to rescue you all."
The children seemed to understand they weren’t bad people and nodded vigorously one by one.
Pei Hanze and Pei Huaian exchanged glances, while the surviving soldiers covered their escape.
Pei Hanze and Pei Huaian gathered their inner strength and slapped the courtyard door, which flew out on impact. Ah Er charged at them, throwing powder in the direction of the two men.
They quickly retreated and soon noticed their internal breath becoming unstable.
"I don’t advise you to use your inner strength again, or you will die with blood flowing from all seven apertures," Ah Er laughed loudly.
Just as he thought he had the upper hand, a group of people dressed in black suddenly appeared.
These people skillfully rescued the children from the fire and attacked Ah Er.
Clearly, all of them were highly skilled in martial arts, and Ah Er was forced to retreat step by step.
"Damn it!" Ah Er cursed under his breath and turned to run away.
"Capture him alive," Pei Huaian ordered.
The men in black rapidly gave chase, while Ah Er sprinted forward, completely ignoring the danger behind him.
Suddenly, a hidden weapon struck. Ah Er sensed the threat and dodged to the side, but the weapon grazed his shoulder, and a gush of bright red fluid flowed out.
Ah Er clutched his shoulder, his clothes now stained with blood, a gash evident at the site of his shoulder blade.
This also slowed down his escape, not to mention the unresolved danger pursuing him.
"Bang~"
"Ahh—" A piercing scream filled the forest as Ah Er’s left leg instantly broke, and he fell to the ground.
The men in black approached and kicked Ah Er over. Ah Er groaned and lay on the ground.
One of the men in black stepped on Ah Er’s chest while two others bound him with rope.
Pei Huaian approached, looking down at Ah Er from above, his cold eyes gleaming with a bloodthirsty light. He raised his right hand and fiercely slapped Ah Er’s cheek.
Blood trickled from the corner of Ah Er’s mouth as stars danced in his eyes.
"Heh, I really underestimated you," Ah Er clenched his teeth and stood up despite the pain.
He laughed wildly towards the sky, his green eyes shining with a bloodthirsty glow.
"Take him away," Pei Huaian said indifferently.
The men in black took Ah Er away; still, he screamed resentfully: "Someone will avenge me."
Pei Huaian knew who he was referring to. When Pei Hanze saw him with a worried expression, he patted his shoulder.
"That girl is very smart; she won’t let herself be in danger. Besides, that man in the black robe wouldn’t dare to act rashly in Capital City."
"Mmm." Pei Huaian snapped out of his thoughts; Shao He would do this to buy him time, it wasn’t the moment to feel sorrowful.
The two returned to the village, where the village chief knelt down before Pei Huaian to confess his guilt, and the other villagers knelt as well. The children were also rescued.
"We cannot let these villagers go scot-free; they are not innocent," Pei Hanze warned.
"Thank you, Imperial Uncle, for the reminder."
Pei Huaian was never one to be soft-hearted, and he ordered all the villagers to be captured.
Whether they were coerced or willing participants, they had harmed the lives of others—that was the truth.
The soldiers cleared out a courtyard to rest and settled the children down, providing them with a hearty dinner. After the meal, the children lay down to rest.
The moonlight emerged from behind the clouds, casting a silver glow over the courtyard.
