Chapter 491: Chapter 493: The Child Afflicted with Gu Poison
The pupils of these children were dilated, as if something was controlling them.
The soldiers on guard immediately reported the situation to Pei Huaian.
"Fifth Prince, Fifth Prince?"
A series of urgent knocks on the door woke Pei Huaian violently from his sleep, and he rose to open the door.
"What’s the matter?"
"There’s something wrong with the children."
No sooner had the words fallen than the people in the room walked straight out and saw the children
standing stiffly in the courtyard, their eyes hollow and empty, looking around.
Pei Huaian frowned and asked, "What’s wrong with them?"
"Your Highness, all the children were lying in bed just fine, and then suddenly they all sat up—even the smallest one! We had no choice but to come and inform you," the soldier said with his head bowed and a look of embarrassment on his face.
"Are you certain?"
"Absolutely certain, everyone double-checked the children, they are all unharmed, but now they seem as if they are possessed!"
Hearing this, Pei Huaian’s brow furrowed deeper, and he gestured with his hand for everyone to quickly get the children back to bed to rest while also ordering someone to call for an imperial physician.
The children were taken back to their rooms one by one, while Pei Huaian and the soldiers stayed outside, vigilantly aware of their surroundings.
"What exactly is going on here? They couldn’t really be possessed, could they?" one of the soldiers whispered to his companion, his tone full of bewilderment.
The other soldier shook his head, indicating he had no idea either, but warned in a low voice, "Stop talking nonsense here, or the Fifth Prince will hear you and you’ll be punished."
The soldier nodded understandingly and fell silent.
Inside the house, all the children lay obediently on their own beds.
"Children, don’t be afraid," Pei Huaian said, patting them gently and speaking softly.
However, this gesture had no effect, and the children remained rigidly lying on their beds.
Seeing this, Pei Huaian’s gaze turned to the Imperial Physician, and he asked in a deep voice, "What’s going on? Why have the children become like this?"
"Your Highness, this... I’m really not sure," the Imperial Physician said with a bewildered face, obviously also puzzled by what had happened.
Upon hearing this, Pei Huaian’s face grew even more serious.
Suddenly, the sound of urgent, chaotic footsteps came from outside, and the soldiers ran over.
"Your Highness, there are assassins!"
Pei Huaian’s heart skipped a beat, and he rushed out immediately.
In the darkness, two black-clad figures attacked the children with eerie speed. The tips of their swords glinted coldly, aiming for vital points with intense killing intent.
"Protect the children!"
Pei Huaian shouted angrily, drawing his worn sword to confront them.
The tall, slender figures fought each other fiercely, their blades whirling and flashing, chilling and deadly!
"Damn it!" Pei Huaian roared, his leg sweeping through the air like a whirlwind, powerfully knocking the man in the black robe back several meters.
After the Man in Black Robe regained his footing, he lunged toward the children again.
Seeing this, Pei Huaian roared and drew his sword to chase after him, his moves sharp and ruthless.
Though the Man in Black Robe was skilled in martial arts, he was still young and lacked experience.
Pei Huaian pressed forward step by step, his swordsmanship sharp and swift, each move lethal, aiming for the opponent’s deadly points and leaving him no chance to defend.
Soon, the two figures tangled together, with the Man in Black Robe starting to show signs of defeat, his moves thwarted at every turn.
Pei Huaian sneered, and his arm shot out, his wrist turning nimbly, and the sword’s edge, slanting slightly, cut through the air toward the chest of the man in the black robe.
The Man in Black Robe reacted quickly, managing to dodge to the side to avoid a fatal blow.
However, the sword’s path veered off course, slicing open his left shoulder and blood sprayed out.
Pei Huaian leapt in front of the Man in Black Robe, the tip of his sword pressing against his throat.
"Speak, who sent you?"
"Hmph..." The woman in the black robe grunted, a sinister cold smile curling her lips, and then she bit her tongue, committing suicide.
"Bastard!" Pei Huaian cursed.
At that moment, a group of guards surrounded another woman in a black robe.
Pei Huaian stood, hands behind his back, his cold, deep black eyes emitting a sharp, intimidating light.
"Your Highness, how should we deal with her?" the lead soldier stepped forward to ask.
"Lock her up in the woodshed first."
"As you command!"
The soldiers dragged the woman in the black robe away.
Pei Huaian turned to return to the house but suddenly remembered something and quickly called a halt.
"Do not confine her with the villagers."
"Understood." The soldier obeyed the order and left.
Pei Huaian left the children’s room and stood outside alone in silence.
After a while, the sound of light footsteps approached, and Pei Huaian glanced back before sinking back into thought.
"These children have been poisoned with Gu." Pei Hanze’s voice broke the silence and interrupted Pei Huaian’s thoughts.
Pei Huaian greeted the newcomer with a slight bow, "Imperial Uncle, how come you’re here?"
"This king couldn’t rest easy. I always felt the Man in Black Robe wouldn’t let this place be. It turned out as I expected," said Pei Hanze.
Hearing this, a complex look crossed Pei Huaian’s eyes as he replied indifferently, "Imperial Uncle is truly astute."
"What do you plan to do next?" Pei Hanze turned and asked.
"Find a way to cure the Gu Poison," Pei Huaian said, knowing it wouldn’t be easy, but he couldn’t just watch these innocent children continue to suffer.
