Chapter 474 - 476: Learning of His Misfortune
Chapter 474: Chapter 476: Learning of His Misfortune
Shao He felt a wave of melancholy, not knowing what had happened on Pei Huaian’s side; it had been two days since she last received any correspondence.
"Miss, don’t worry," Qingxia consoled. "The Fifth Prince might be too busy, and the epidemic might be causing quite the trouble."
Shao He let out a light sigh, "I hope so!"
Feeling somewhat dejected, she leaned back on the recliner, closed her eyes to rest, and silently prayed for Pei Huaian to reply soon.
Yun Qian sat by her side, staring at her profile. Her features were picturesque, and a hint of pallor on her cheeks made her look distressingly delicate and lovable.
Her appearance involuntarily reminded him of the first time he met her, fragile as a kitten, stirring an inexplicable emotion within him.
Suddenly, Yun Qian jerked awake; how could he entertain such strange thoughts?
Shao He opened her eyes and met his evasive gaze.
"What’s wrong with you?"
"Nothing!" Yun Qian quickly diverted his gaze, looking up at the deep blue sky.
"Are you feeling unwell?" Shao He watched him, puzzled. He had seemed a bit strange just now; was he sick?
"Not at all!" Yun Qian continued to deny it.
Shao He furrowed her brows, unable to understand why he had suddenly changed.
"I am tired; I’m going to rest," Yun Qian stood up and quickly walked toward the room.
Shao He watched his retreating figure and turned to the person beside her, asking, "Did I say something wrong just now?"
Qingxia had clearly seen the look of admiration in Doctor Yun’s eyes. Hearing the miss’s question, she wondered whether to speak up or not.
"Miss, haven’t you ever thought that Doctor Yun might have..."
"Shao He, Shao He..."
A series of urgent calls interrupted Qingxia, and Jhiang Yijia strode over hastily.
"What has flustered you like this? Did Fang Jue do something to wrong you?" Shao He teased.
Such an incident would certainly not occur; Fang Jue was known to be an exceptionally good man—domestic, protective of his wife, and always distant and polite to other women, never sparing them an extra glance.
Jhiang Yijia lightly patted Shao He, "And here you are jesting at me. Are you aware that something has happened in Jingzhou?"
"What?" Shao He’s complexion turned pale instantly upon hearing this.
"It is said that the Fifth Prince and his men have been missing for two days, and they have not been found yet."
Shao He’s vision darkened, and she nearly fainted, but fortunately, Qingxia and Jhiang Yijia caught her in time.
"The epidemic in Jingzhou is rampant; the Fifth Prince, in an attempt to save the people, took his elite soldiers to investigate and has not returned. Only Luo Cheng was left to guard the area, and now there are rumors starting in the court," Jhiang Yijia continued to explain.
"I understand, thank you."
Shao He decided; after settling everything tonight, she would set out for Jingzhou tomorrow.
Jhiang Yijia didn’t know whether this decision was right or wrong, but he just didn’t want the miss to be kept in the dark. She had the right to know.
That evening, Shao He used the token the Emperor had initially granted her to enter the imperial palace.
She knelt on the ground, holding her child, "I wish to go to Jingzhou to help treat the people."
The Emperor was momentarily taken aback by her words before he slowly said, "Do you realize how grave the situation is there? The epidemic is rampant, and you may never return."
Shao He, with utmost resolve in her eyes, said, "I am the Fifth Prince’s Consort. As a consort, I should do something useful for the people. I can’t just stand by and watch the man I have yet to marry venture into danger alone."
"I implore the Emperor to grant me this, even if it means death; I wish to die beside him!"
"Ridiculous!"
The Emperor walked over, picked up Xiao Linzhang, and said, "Would you really abandon this child?"
"I trust the Emperor will cherish him. Xiao Linzhang is a blessed child," Shao He said, her eyes brimming with reluctance.
But with things as they were, she had no other choice.
"It cannot be!" Pei Hanze burst in from the outside, speaking firmly.
The Emperor and Shao He were slightly surprised, but Pei Hanze could not care less. He grasped Shao He’s arms, his eyes bloodshot as he said, "I absolutely won’t let you be in danger again. I won’t let you disappear again. Never!"
Seeing his slightly out-of-control emotion, Shao He guessed that Pei Hanze’s old acquaintance might also have been a doctor who died of the epidemic, which was why he was reacting so strongly.
"Please understand, Prince," she appealed. "As a doctor, I cannot ignore the lives of the people in the city, and as a wife, I cannot disregard my husband’s wellbeing. So, I must go."
Listening to words so similar to his own, Pei Hanze felt a wave of emotion and finally slowly let go of her arms.
"I believe that your old acquaintance has become the brightest star in the sky, watching over you. He surely wouldn’t want you to live in despair; he’d want you to move past what’s happened."
"Easier said than done," Pei Hanze said, rising in dejection, finally understanding at that moment that Shao He was ultimately not the person in his heart.
"Well, if you’re set on going, take the Hidden Guard with you," he finally conceded.
In the end, the Emperor relented. Perhaps after this, no one would object further. The fact that she was the Fifth Prince’s Consort might garner them some additional leverage.
After expressing her gratitude to the Emperor, Shao He took one last lingering look at Xiao Linzhang before turning and leaving in haste.
She returned to Anji Hall first, looked at the little boy, and informed Yun Qian of what to be mindful of and how to care for him.
Yun Qian took notes diligently, fearful of missing even the smallest detail.
"I leave this child in your care," she said.
Yun Qian watched her, wanting to persuade her but stopping the words at his lips, ultimately sighing in resignation.
