Chapter 447: Chapter 449: Is Imperial Uncle Here to Save His Fiancée Too?
Shao He stood among the branches, looking down at the wild boar below.
Seeing itself ignored, the wild boar flew into a rage, charging forward with bared teeth and slashing claws.
Unfortunately, it was too fat; its clumsy movements made it utterly unable to leap onto the tree, and it could only stomp with its hooves.
Each of its attacks missed, and in its fury, it grew even more frantic, continually slamming into the rough trunk and leaves, even biting at the tree.
The wild boar’s strength was immense; within a few bites, it had gnawed away half of the trunk.
Shao He watched the wild boar’s actions heart in mouth, fearing that it might break the whole tree.
She reached to her waist, drew out a packet of powder, and scattered it down; dazed by the medicine, the wild boar’s eyes rolled aimlessly on the ground.
Its wails soon drew the attention of the pursuers; sensing trouble, they immediately leaped down from the tree.
Shao He quickly dove into the underbrush, and though the pursuers reached the scene, they were just a step too slow and saw only the boar howling incessantly.
"Where is she?"
"Don’t know."
"Damn it, she escaped again. Keep looking, she couldn’t have gone far."
With a command from the leader in black, his followers scattered, ceaselessly searching all around.
Shao He clamped a hand over her mouth, the pain from her shoulder turning her face deathly pale.
She didn’t know how long she could maintain this posture, her body growing stiff, before she finally dared to shift slightly.
As the sky darkened, Shao He cautiously emerged from the underbrush, walking through the night to which she was accustomed.
By then, the moon had climbed up the branches, bathing the ground in clear light; the surroundings were eerily quiet, apart from the rustling of wind through the grass, void of any other sound.
Shao He exhaled softly, slowing her steps as she continued forward.
After a long while, she suddenly heard footsteps behind her, startling her nearly to the point of falling.
"Don’t move!"
A deep, chilling voice reached her ears.
Shao He was stunned and turned around, "You... how are you here?"
After speaking, she felt it strange: "No, how did you know I was here?"
Pei Hanze’s gaze was as sharp as a knife, his tone icy and thick with sarcasm, "Idiot."
Shao He guarded herself as she watched him, even taking a couple of steps back, "Prince, don’t tell me you’re here to enjoy the breeze late at night?"
"What do you think? Did you think I had someone bring you here?" Pei Hanze stepped forward slightly, his heart ached a bit seeing the expression in her eyes.
He raised a hand to cover her gaze, unwilling to see her looking like this.
"Otherwise, what?"
Shao He could think of no other reason.
Pei Hanze didn’t reply, his eyes fixed intently on a tree branch behind her, his face deadly serious, "Don’t move. Whatever happens, do not move."
Shao He was not stubborn. She saw the severity in Pei Hanze’s eyes, and knowing the potential dangers of the forest, she complied.
And sure enough, right behind her on the tree branch, a small red snake was eyeing her neck, seemingly ready to pounce at any slight movement.
These snakes were known for their deadly venom that acted so quickly, one would die before finding a way to counteract it, essentially making rescue efforts futile.
Just as the snake launched itself, Pei Hanze grabbed it and threw it away.
Shao He staggered backward, falling into Pei Hanze who caught her by the arm, pulling her into his embrace.
At that moment, another hand appeared, seizing her arm and pulling her aside.
"Who?" Shao He exclaimed, turning to look at the person beside her.
Lit by the dim moonlight, she saw him clearly—the newcomer was Pei Huaian.
He wore black attire, striking and resolute in appearance, his eyes deep and dark, exuding an air of intense coldness.
He wrapped one arm around Shao He, while the other hand gripped Pei Hanze’s hand that was holding her arm.
"Pei Huaian?" Pei Hanze frowned in inquiry.
"Imperial Uncle, what a coincidence." Pei Huaian’s tone was chilling, laced with a hint of menace.
The two men locked eyes for a moment, before suddenly striking out at the same time.
Pei Huaian let go of Shao He, leaping into the air, his right leg sweeping fiercely, accompanied by a swooshing sound.
"Bang!" Pei Hanze dodged, his palm striking at Pei Huaian’s chest, sending him flying backward.
Staggering, Pei Huaian braced himself against a large tree, barely stabilizing himself.
"Huaian!" Shao He called out worriedly, wanting to rush over to check on him, but Pei Huaian motioned her to stop with a raised hand.
"It’s nothing."
Pei Hanze hadn’t used his inner strength, so although he was pushed away, he wasn’t injured.
"Why would Imperial Uncle be here?"
Pei Hanze’s face was stern, his eyes sharp, "Why you are here is why I am here."
"I came to rescue my fiancée. Is Imperial Uncle also here to rescue a fiancée?"
His tone was gentle, but the cold glint in his eyes did not lessen.
Pei Hanze laughed, turning to Shao He and spoke softly, "I am here to rescue a beloved."
Shao He couldn’t help but roll her eyes. A beloved? What did she have to do with him?
Upon hearing this, Pei Huaian’s eyes grew colder, his aura becoming ever more severe like a sharp sword ready to strike at an enemy.
