Chapter 445: Chapter 447: The Gift She Gave Me
Shao Zhengru frowned at him but didn’t answer, as she did not know if the person before her was trustworthy.
"Your son has been killed, don’t you want to seek revenge for him? Or are you content with his death remaining a mystery?"
The man’s casual words caused Shao Zhengru’s expression to change drastically. She violently grabbed the man by the collar and questioned him, "What nonsense are you spouting!"
"I can provide you with valuable clues about your son’s death," the man said still in a gentle and soft tone.
Shao Zhengru released the man’s collar and scoffed coldly, "Why should I believe you?"
"Because I can help you find the real murderer."
"Humph..." Shao Zhengru scoffed again.
The man did not continue to explain, instead, he took out a dagger and handed it to Shao Zhengru.
"Take it. As long as you do as I say, I can assure you the cause of your son’s death will be clarified."
Shao Zhengru stared at the man’s hand, motionless for a long while.
The man did not urge her, instead, he waited patiently.
After a long time, Shao Zhengru grasped the dagger and swung it at the man, who had anticipated this and quickly dodged, avoiding the sharp blade. He then kicked towards Shao Zhengru’s chest.
Caught off guard, Shao Zhengru was kicked to the ground.
"Since you’re unwilling to cooperate, then forget it," the man said as he dusted off his clothes, preparing to leave.
Shao Zhengru was stunned for a few seconds before reacting, "Wait."
The corners of the man’s mouth curled up slightly, anticipating his next words.
"What kind of cooperation do you want to talk about?" Shao Zhengru asked in a deep voice.
"It’s simple, do me a favor, and I’ll tell you who the murderer is!"
"What favor?"
The man walked over and whispered a few words into his ear, and seeing the shock on his face, continued, "If this is accomplished, not only can I help you find the murderer, but I can also ensure your rapid rise and return to the official circles."
Left alone, Shao Zhengru sat there in a daze, contemplating whether to trust this person.
But now he had no other choice. Rather than living in such a pitiable state, it was better to gamble everything.
On the other hand, after her wounds had been dressed, Shao He’s eyelids kept twitching, as if something was about to happen.
"What’s on your mind again?" Pei Hanze suddenly leaned in and patted her on the head.
When Pei Huaian arrived, he just so happened to witness this scene, and a surge of irritation welled up inside him, although he managed to restrain it with the last of his rationality.
"Shao He, are you all right?"
Seeing his flustered appearance, Shao He shook her head, "I’m fine, it’s just a small injury."
Pei Huaian looked at her with eyes full of guilt, pulling her into his embrace, "I’m sorry, I didn’t protect you."
"How could you blame yourself for that, it was my own carelessness, I’ll be more cautious next time."
Shao He leaned against his broad chest, listening to his strong heartbeat, feeling exceptionally secure.
Pei Zhengqin leaned back in his chair, unwilling to watch their intimate exchange and closed his eyes.
Pei Huaian’s gaze fell on the person in the chair. Pei Hanze, feeling the sharp look, slowly opened his eyes.
Their eyes met, both men showing a disdainful smile.
Pei Huaian withdrew his gaze and held the woman in his arms tighter, his deep voice filled with indulgence, "You should rest for a while, I’m going to speak with the Imperial Uncle."
Shao He stepped out of his embrace, following his gaze to Pei Hanze not far away.
"He came to my rescue when I injured my hand."
Although she had the capability to save herself at that time, the fact that Pei Hanze was injured in the process of rescuing her was undeniable.
Pei Huaian’s gaze returned to Shao He’s clear eyes, a strange emotion flickering in his own.
He stretched out his hand to stroke her soft hair, giving a gentle smile, "Mhm."
He turned and left, approaching Pei Hanze and bowed, "Thank you, Imperial Uncle, for saving Shao He."
Pei Hanze’s eyelids lifted slightly, the corners of his mouth forming a cold smile, "I saved Miss Shao, not you. She should be the one to thank me, not you."
Pei Huaian’s expression instantly darkened, sinister and terrifying, with a bloodthirsty red glow in his eyes, "The Imperial Uncle seems to have forgotten that the person you saved is my future wife!"
With every word, his voice carried a threat. Pei Hanze’s eyebrows rose, and instead of getting angry, he laughed, "Heh heh..."
Pei Hanze stood up, patting Pei Huaian’s shoulder, "Ah Huaian, you’ve just said it yourself, Miss Shao is your future wife. Since you’re not yet married, she’s not yet your wife."
"Imperial Uncle is mistaken, the Imperial Decree has been issued, and her position can only be as the Fifth Prince’s Consort," Pei Huaian said through gritted teeth.
Pei Hanze’s smile remained undiminished, his gaze deep and meaningful as he glanced at him, shaking his head with a laugh, "One can never predict what the future holds."
Having said that, he walked straight out.
Pei Huaian noticed the Jade Hairpin on his head and was momentarily taken aback, then quickly followed after him.
"Imperial Uncle!"
Pei Hanze stopped and turned around, facing the person running toward him, "Is there something else?"
"I wonder if I may take a look at the Jade Hairpin on the Imperial Uncle’s head," Pei Huaian said, staring intently at the hairpin, feeling his rationality slowly being eroded.
Pei Hanze removed the Jade Hairpin from his head and handed it over, his smile cool as he said, "This was a gift from Miss Shao, is there something amiss?"
Pei Huaian snapped back to reality, gave a faint smile, and handed back the hairpin, "Nothing at all, thank you, Imperial Uncle."
Pei Hanze took the Jade Hairpin and went on his way, in a particularly good mood, even slowing his pace more than usual.
