Chapter 383 - 384: Compensation in Silver
Chapter 383: Chapter 384: Compensation in Silver
Liang Rou hadn’t expected to cross paths again with her enemy so soon.
With fury, she looked at Shao He and said, "Just because you are the Fifth Prince’s Consort, you think you can act recklessly like this?"
"I’m sorry, it was my fault." Shao He had been walking too quickly and hadn’t seen her coming.
"A simple apology and that’s it? Look at my hand—it’s scraped!" Liang Rou, helped up by her maid, glared at Shao He with eyes full of hatred.
Since the last incident, the way her father had treated her made her feel out of favor, so whenever she saw Shao He, she couldn’t contain her temper and wanted to teach her a lesson, even if it was just gaining a verbal upper hand.
"If that’s the case, tell me how much silver you want," Shao He, knowing Liang Rou’s disposition and not wanting to argue with her, just wanted to leave the place quickly.
Liang Rou was startled; she had initially planned to manipulate this opportunity to extort some silver from Shao He, but to her surprise, Shao He offered compensation proactively.
With a haughty tilt of her head, and a glance from the corner of her eye, Liang Rou continued, "Silver, you say..."
"What happened here?" A resonant voice arrived, and with it Pei Haolan appeared before everyone.
Seeing him, Liang Rou approached and said, "Greetings to Your Highness. Doctor Shao struck me, and we were just discussing compensation in silver."
"Oh? And how does Miss Liang lack that bit of silver? Besides, surely Doctor Shao did not do it on purpose," Pei Haolan smiled as he spoke.
Liang Rou’s face soured. Now, taking the silver was awkward, but not taking it was just as bad.
Shao He curled her lip in a cold laugh, stepped forward, and said, "Miss Liang of the Liang Family indeed differs from others."
"What do you mean by that?"
"Exactly what it sounds like. Do you still want the silver or not? If not, I’ll be leaving," Shao He added, simmering with anger as she remembered how Liang Rou had framed her.
"Wait," Liang Rou called out suddenly.
Pei Huaian directly pulled out an ingot of silver from within his robe and tossed it, "Don’t overstep!"
Liang Rou, frightened by the warning look in his eyes, stepped back, the ingot of silver in her hand as hot as a burning coal.
"I advise you, Miss Liang, to cherish the time you’ve stolen for yourself," Shao He paused in her stride, spoke, and then continued walking.
Seeing her look, Liang Rou always felt that Shao He might already know everything.
But then she consoled herself, no, that couldn’t be. If Shao He knew, how could she let her off so easily? She would definitely seek revenge.
Yes, that’s right; she must be overthinking this.
This thought slightly eased Liang Rou’s feelings.
A maid approached from behind and asked cautiously, "Miss, are you all right?"
To Liang Rou’s further annoyance, she raised her hand and slapped the maid, "Useless! Why didn’t you support me properly just now? What use are you to me?"
The maid, covering her swollen cheek, dared not speak and could only cry silently.
Seeing her maid sobbing, Liang Rou grabbed her ear and said, "Stop your crying here, acting as if I have bullied you, when it was clearly your fault!"
"I am wrong, miss. I am sorry," the maid pleaded, in pain.
Liang Rou stopped only when she noticed someone approaching, she then straightened her clothes and said coldly, "Kneel outside tonight and reflect on your actions."
"Yes," the maid replied, her hand still covering her swollen ear as she bowed.
On the way back, Shao He had initially not planned to ride in the same carriage as Pei Huaian, but certain individuals stubbornly followed, leaving them no choice but to ride together.
The carriage was extraordinarily silent; Pei Huaian occasionally lifted his head to steal glances at the person sitting opposite him.
He had explained what had happened many times already, but Shao He still didn’t want to talk to him since the incident behind the rockery, not having spoken a word to him since.
Shao He didn’t want to avoid talking to him, it was just that she didn’t know how to begin.
"I really had no ill intentions, it was purely a natural reaction of my body when facing the woman I love. I couldn’t help myself," Pei Huaian said, his head drooping in resignation.
"Oh," Shao He responded indifferently, lifting the curtain to look outside.
The carriage soon stopped in front of the Fifth Prince’s Mansion. Shao He hurriedly jumped down and rushed into the mansion, heading back to her courtyard. Pei Huaian followed and was about to speak when the door suddenly slammed shut with a bang.
"Shao He, open the door, this matter is my fault. I apologize to you, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have taken such drastic actions, I should have controlled myself," Pei Huaian confessed, enumerating his faults from outside, not realizing that the person inside had long since left.
Qingxia saw her mistress looking flushed and expressed concern, "Miss, are you feeling unwell?"
"It’s probably just too hot," Shao He casually dismissed the concern.
Qingxia looked surprised. It was almost the end of summer, and the evenings were quite cool. Furthermore, her mistress wasn’t wearing much. It couldn’t possibly be the heat.
"Miss, if you’re not feeling well, it’s better to say so," Qingxia said, a bit worried.
Qing Shan, noticing their mistress’s distress, pulled the rambling Qingxia away.
Once out of the room, Qing Shan reprimanded, "It’s clear the mistress doesn’t want to talk about it, and surely this has something to do with the Fifth Prince. Why must you keep questioning?"
With that realization, Qingxia’s eyes shone with surprise.
