Chapter 368 - 369 Only You, One Wife

Chapter 368: Chapter 369 Only You, One Wife

Pei Chengye sat back down again and, lifting his eyes to stare at the person in front of him, seriously asked, "Why are you doing this?"

"I believe in Your Highness’s ability, that you can certainly bring peace and prosperity to the nation." Xia Zhaoshun smiled very happily, but the smile did not reach his eyes.

Upon hearing these flattering words, Pei Chengye felt extremely pleased, even starting to get carried away, not expecting someone to be so willing to follow him.

"Since the eldest son holds this prince in such high regard, then this prince will definitely do his utmost to assist the Emperor in accomplishing his grand aspirations." Pei Chengye spoke boldly as if he had already become the supreme ruler, the man who commanded the land and pointed out strategies.

Xia Zhaoshun’s smile deepened upon hearing this, "The Second Prince is indeed a clever man, unlike some others..."

At this point, Xia Zhaoshun’s lips curved into an ironic arc.

"Young Master is overpraising me, this prince is ashamed."

"Haha..."

The two looked at each other and burst into laugher, as if the unpleasantness from earlier had never occurred.

——

As night fell, in the small courtyard of the Fifth Prince’s Mansion, Pei Huaian leaned against a tree trunk, looking at the bright moon with a far-reaching gaze.

Suddenly, Ah Mo appeared and respectfully stood beside him, bowing his head and reporting, "Master, Xia Zhaoshun indeed has colluded with the Second Prince, the two conspired together in a tea house today."

Pei Huaian’s lips curved into a wicked smile, "Good, continue to monitor them."

"Yes."

Ah Mo turned and left, leaving Pei Huaian alone in the courtyard, staring at the pitch-black night sky.

Suddenly, footsteps sounded from behind him, and he casually plucked a leaf off a tree, ready to send it flying, but then he stopped upon seeing the newcomer and walked over.

"You haven’t gone to rest yet?" Pei Huaian knew she had been very busy these days, so he didn’t dare to disturb her too much when she came back at night, hoping she would have a good rest.

Shao He sat down on a stone bench and asked, staring intently at Pei Huaian, "Why did the Emperor suddenly decree an arranged marriage for me?"

"What’s so strange about that? Father has always known of my affection for you, we are both young and gifted, truly a match made in heaven." Pei Huaian said with a chuckle.

Yet Shao He spoke very calmly, "It was you who requested the decree from the Emperor, right?"

She was sure that, in the Imperial Court, no one but Pei Huaian could influence the Emperor’s will.

Hearing that, Pei Huaian didn’t deny it and simply shrugged and laughed, "Since you already know, then it saves me the trouble of explaining. Indeed, it was I who pleaded with the Emperor to grant the decree."

Shao He smiled faintly, "Are you so confident that I will agree to marry you?"

Pei Huaian suddenly stepped in front of her, grabbed her hand, and placed it on his chest.

"Shao He, do you feel my heartbeat? This heart has only ever beaten so fiercely for you. I believe it’s the same for you towards me, which is why I sought the decree from Father, to make you my principal wife."

Shao He’s cheeks flushed with a blush. She quickly pulled her hand away and turned around, her voice tinged with a hint of sourness, "That’s right, everyone knows I’m soon to be your principal wife, and immediately there are those sending me cards, wanting to become your concubines."

Pei Huaian sat there hurriedly, vowing earnestly, "I was unaware of this matter, but rest assured, I will only marry you as my wife in the future, there will be no other concubines in the house."

"What difference does that make? You’re a Prince, you could likely be made a King in the future, how could you have only one wife? And even if you agree, what about the Emperor, the Empress Dowager? Will they consent?"

Shao He felt it improbable, her heart soured at the thought, feeling somewhat stifled.

Taking her by the shoulders, Pei Huaian turned her around to face him, looking her in the eyes and said seriously, "I have already discussed this matter with the Emperor, and I have his approval."

"How can that be? Would the Emperor agree to such a ludicrous thing?" Shao He exclaimed in surprise, her eyes widening.

She doubted whether what he was saying was true or not.

Pei Huaian, seeing her skepticism, explained, "The Emperor once fell in love with my mother, but under pressure from the court, he had to take the Empress and other concubines. He has long since grown tired of the harem and the strife between the princes."

Many times, the Emperor turned a blind eye, not that he was unaware of the truth, but simply unwilling to delve into it.

"So that’s how it is."

Continuing, Pei Huaian said, "But the Emperor’s stance is that he does not object; however, in the future I must be able to persuade the members of the court and also guard against the loyal advisors who would die remonstrating."

"You mean the Emperor is leaning towards you for the throne?" Shao He blurted out directly.

Realizing what she had just said, she quickly covered her mouth. Although this was Pei Huaian’s residence, there could be prying ears, and she was afraid that eavesdroppers might relay her words, stirring up trouble.

Pei Huaian nodded, "The Emperor indeed has such intentions."

Shao He understood why the Emperor would make such a choice; after all, the other princes were incompetent.

Pei Siyang was disabled, Pei Chengye was not considered useful, Pei Haolan was indifferent to politics, and Pei Jingyi was too ambitious and easily swayed, unsuitable for the throne.

By this accounting, only Pei Huaian was most suitable.

"Unfortunately, because of your special status, coupled with the order of seniority, it might not be possible to quickly bring you into the house after the engagement." Pei Huaian considered this with some dissatisfaction.

He wanted to marry Shao He sooner.
