Chapter 367: Chapter 368: The Jade Pendant Token
At this time, a palace maid suddenly hurried in to report that the Second Prince requested an audience, and the Empress immediately ordered someone to invite him in.
Upon seeing the Empress, Pei Chengye got straight to the point, "Mother, I don’t want to marry Jiang Zhou."
He had heard more than enough rumors about this woman. It was bad enough that she was older, but she also failed to behave with propriety. There were rumors flying around that she had been improperly intimate with other men.
Although she had not been caught red-handed, there is no smoke without fire. If she really hadn’t done anything, why would people smear her reputation like this?
The Empress narrowed her eyes slightly and scoffed, "What do you know? Your father, the Emperor, intends to give up on you. We must make preparations early."
"How can this be!" Pei Chengye said, agitated.
He held a high position in the court, how could his father, the Emperor, bear to forsake him?
The Empress looked at him with disappointment in her heart.
If he had been more observant and proactive from the beginning, they would not have ended up in such a situation today.
Knowing his mother was angry, Pei Chengye did not argue with her but stood quietly, waiting for her anger to subside.
After a moment, the Empress sighed and said, "Cheng’er, you need to understand that power is the most important thing in this world. You need to see the situation clearly."
Pei Chengye frowned and said, "Now that the Zheng Family has fallen, if father gives up on us then..."
Pei Chengye dared not imagine what life would be like afterward. As proud as he had been before, now he was equally humiliated, and he wondered how he could bear it.
He had always believed he would ascend to the throne one day, and now his mother was telling him all was impossible. How could he accept this!
The expression on the Empress’s face turned dark as she said, "Since the Emperor has made his decision, then Don’t blame this foolish mother for not remembering past affections!"
A mocking smile appeared on the corner of the Empress’s mouth.
"Mother, what do you mean by this?" Pei Chengye sensed something unusual in her words and asked.
"Cheng’er, rest assured, even if your father abandons you, it doesn’t matter. We will find hope for ourselves."
The Empress stood up and handed Pei Chengye a Jade Pendant, instructing him with utmost seriousness, "This Jade Pendant is a token. In a few days, take it to Wanfu Temple to see the abbot."
"You must not let anyone notice, and during this time, you must keep your composure and maintain appearances." The Empress looked at her son and gave further instructions with concern.
This matter was of great importance. If not for the Emperor’s decision, she would never have resorted to such a desperate strategy.
After all, it was the Emperor’s heartlessness that forced her to take such a risky step.
"Mother, what is the purpose of this Jade Pendant?" Pei Chengye felt the cool touch of the Jade Pendant in his hand and asked, puzzled.
The Empress did not answer his question but instead instructed, "Just take the Jade Pendant and find the abbot. You need not concern yourself with the rest."
"Yes, I understand," Pei Chengye replied. Although he harbored many doubts, he ultimately followed his mother’s orders.
After leaving the palace and on his way back, he continuously toyed with the Jade Pendant, still uncertain of its purpose.
Just then, the carriage jolted suddenly, and the Jade Pendant fell from his hand onto the ground. As he bent down to pick it up, the carriage curtain was blown open by the wind.
Xia Zhaoshun, who was passing by outside, happened to see the bright green Jade Pendant.
He approached and respectfully said, "May I know if the occupant of the carriage is the Second Prince?"
Pei Chengye put the Jade Pendant into his chest and slightly lifted the carriage curtain, tilting his head to look at the person outside, "Who are you?"
"I am Xia Zhaoshun, at your service, Second Prince," he replied.
It was only then that Pei Chengye recalled that Xia Zhaohe, who had died a few days ago, was his sister.
"So, you are the eldest son of the Xia family."
"Would the Second Prince honor me with his presence for a cup of tea at the tea house ahead?" Xia Zhaoshun invited Pei Chengye for tea.
"This prince is tired and would rather not accompany you," Pei Chengye flatly refused.
Xia Zhaoshun seemed to have anticipated this response and smiled, "Second Prince doesn’t need to rush to refuse. I wish to discuss matters concerning the Fifth Prince with you."
Upon hearing this, Pei Chengye’s expression changed, and he immediately followed him to the tea house ahead. He wanted to see what kind of trick Xia Zhaoshun was playing.
At the tea house, Xia Zhaoshun ordered a pot of tea and two plates of pastries.
Xia Zhaoshun leisurely savored the fragrant tea, but his gaze was fixed on the restless Pei Chengye.
"I’m here now. If you have something to say, say it quickly." After waiting for a while, Pei Chengye was getting impatient.
"Since that’s the case, I won’t beat around the bush," Xia Zhaoshun said with a sly grin, his eyes gleaming shrewdly, "I’ve heard that the Fifth Prince’s Consort is named Shao He, a female doctor."
Pei Chengye frowned, "What of it?"
"I’ve also heard that the other princes have married legitimate daughters from various families as Consorts," Xia Zhaoshun continued.
"What does that have to do with this prince?" Pei Chengye scoffed disdainfully.
If he had known he was coming to hear such nonsensical talk, he would have gone straight back to his estate from the beginning.
"Of course, it matters. The bride appointed by the Emperor for the Second Prince happens to be the legitimate, elder daughter of the Jiang Family, Jiang Zhou," Xia Zhaoshun said, wearing a taunting smile, while a hint of scheming flickered in the depths of his eyes.
Having lost his patience to hear more, Pei Chengye stood up to leave, but Xia Zhaoshun said, "What if the Xia family is willing to support the Second Prince, along with the Jiang Family? Wouldn’t the Second Prince have an added advantage like a tiger with wings?"
"You wish to align with me?" Pei Chengye was genuinely surprised that he would say such a thing.
He thought to himself: Is this his idea, or Prince Jing’s? But regardless of whose it was, it was entirely to his benefit.
