Chapter 362: Chapter 363 What poison has been used on me
Shao He suddenly thought of something and asked, "Does this mean Jiang Zhou has always been by Xia Zhaoshun’s side?"
Pei Huaian flicked her forehead gently, "Smart. Although the Jiang Family claimed that Jiang Zhou was at the hometown taking care of the elders, she’s actually always been by Xia Chaosun’s side, deeply in love with him, and willingly serving as a nameless, statusless maid until Xia Zhaoshun returned to the Capital City. Only then did she go back to the Jiang Family."
After hearing this, Shao He was secretly shocked. The Jiang Family’s calculations were very precise!
"Why would The Emperor favor Jiang Zhou to be the Second Prince’s Consort?"
"Jiang Zhou is older and sensible. The Jiang Family has a good reputation, so it’s not a disgrace to the Second Prince’s status. Plus, the Jiang Family is weak and isolated, unlike the interconnected Zheng Family," Pei Huaian explained patiently.
Shao He nodded in understanding. She also guessed that The Emperor must be considering passing the throne to Pei Huaian, but due to kinship, The Emperor had not replaced the current Crown Prince.
After all, Pei Chengye had committed no serious faults; there was no reason to establish another Crown Prince at this time.
If The Emperor really did such a thing directly, he would likely provoke discontent among the court officials and give them a pretext to criticize.
The couple spent an hour finishing their meal. Shao He looked outside and saw people boating on the lake not far away, her lips curving into a slight smile.
Pei Huaian followed her gaze, paid for the meal, and, taking her hand, got up to leave.
"Where are we going now?" Shao He, feeling drowsy after eating, didn’t want to continue wandering.
Without a word, Pei Huaian led her to the riverside, rented a painted pleasure boat, and after seating her, told the boatman to row towards the center of the lake.
"Do you like it?" His voice, tender and deep, rose.
Shao He looked up at him, a smile in her eyes, "I do."
Shao He rested on Pei Huaian’s shoulder and took a short nap, but was soon awakened by the sound of flowing water. When she opened her eyes, she found the scenery before her dreamlike and strikingly beautiful.
"It’s so beautiful!" she exclaimed.
"Hmm," Pei Huaian nodded in agreement.
"I will take you somewhere even more beautiful," Pei Huaian said, his eyelids lowered as he gazed at her tender, pink lips. His Adam’s apple bobbed, and his voice grew husky.
Shao He felt oddly nervous under his gaze and instinctively wanted to retreat, but was caught in a pair of strong arms and heard a voice by her ear, seductive and alluring, "Shao He, what kind of spell have you cast on me, that every time I see you, I don’t want to let go?"
Shao He was etched in his mind like a brand, coming to him at every moment.
"Ahem... you said you were going to take me to a more beautiful place, where is that?" Shao He pushed at Pei Huaian.
The boat appropriately came to a stop, and the boatman outside called, "My lord, we’ve arrived at the Lake Center Pavilion."
"Let’s go," Pei Huaian suddenly released her and went out first.
Shao He paused for a moment before following. Standing on the shore and gazing at the shimmering lake, she felt refreshed. The air was filled with the scent of flowers, which was quite pleasant, and she breathed deeply, feeling her pores opening up.
"This place is indeed beautiful," she praised.
Turning around, Pei Huaian looked at her, his eyes deep and a faint smile on his lips, "If you like it, I can bring you here every day."
But Shao He shook her head, "No matter how beautiful a scenery is, it would become dull if one looks at it for too long."
"Then, whenever you feel like playing, just call me to accompany you. As long as you are happy, anything goes," Pei Huaian said indulgently as he rubbed the top of her head.
Shao He’s heart thumped, with her cheeks blushing, she quickly averted her gaze, "Let’s go sit in the pavilion."
Pei Huaian chuckled, took her fair, slender fingers in his, and interlocked them.
Shao He felt a moment of panic inside and struggled a few times but could not escape his grip.
The pavilion was elegantly decorated, with carved railings and jade detailing, surrounded by fresh flowers, and furnished with tables, chairs, stools, and various antique ornaments.
The boatman approached with tea and pastries, placing them on the table. "If the two of you need anything, just let me know."
"Thank you," Pei Huaian nodded slightly.
Pei Huaian helped Shao He to take a seat and poured her a cup of tea, "Have some tea to refresh yourself."
Shao He took a sip, "The tea is really good. No wonder so many girls like to enjoy tea and admire flowers. This truly is the largest lake in the Capital City."
"We can come here often in the future," Pei Huaian murmured.
Shao He suddenly looked up at him.
His handsome features were smiling, his gaze intense and focused as if he could melt someone.
Shao He lowered her eyes to avoid his burning look, "What do you think, if Pei Chengye found out everything about Jiang Zhou, what would he do?"
"He wouldn’t. Neither the Jiang family nor Xia Zhaoshun would let Pei Chengye know, not even the Empress might suspect that Jiang Zhou is Xia Zhaoshun’s woman," Pei Huaian said calmly.
Shao He grimaced, "A man who can send the woman he loves to another man’s bed: is that still love? How tragic for the woman."
Pei Huaian captured her reaction, "I will never push you into someone else’s arms; I will keep you trapped by my side."
Even knowing his side was not safe, he was still unwilling to let go of Shao He because he knew once he released her, he might never find her again.
