Chapter 580: Kissing Their Wedding Ring
Seeing them working hard made her remain motivated to do her best every day, even when she was beginning to lose focus from thinking about her husband’s absence.
"Your Majesty, a special letter arrived for you. His Eminence asked if you could head to the Magic Tower to open it there," Riley informed her. He even hesitated to speak because she was lost in thought.
Alwin was trying to catch up with all the work he couldn’t do when he was in Umbra, so he had been buried in the Magic Tower for more than a month.
Riley had been the one guarding her with Rendell.
"Special letter?" Arabella tilted her head. "And why do I have to open it in the Magic Tower?"
"His Eminence deemed it might be dangerous for you or your maids to open. It had to be opened with magic to ensure it doesn’t contain anything that may harm Your Majesty."
’Eh? Who would send me a letter this dangerous that Alwin had to ask me to open it there?’
She couldn’t help but wonder if she gained more enemies or whatnot. She gave one last glance at the merry people in the city.
’That letter is not some kind of bad news, right?’
"Alright. Let’s head to the Magic Tower," Arabella agreed feeling a little nervous about the letter.
Riley then teleported them to the Magic Tower.
"Are you alright?" was what Alwin said first when they arrived.
’Why is he asking me that? He’s the one who doesn’t look alright.’
Alwin had turned even paler than usual. He looked like he hadn’t gone out for a whole month.
"I’m fine. You are the one who looks worrisome. You look pale," Arabella pointed it out.
"Ah, I was so busy I barely noticed night and day. I did not even know an entire month had gone by," Alwin replied nonchalantly.
"Huh? You mean you just worked this whole time?" Arabella gawked at him.
"Yes. There are a lot of things only I could sign so the documents piled up. A lot of plans also got unimplemented without me, so I had to oversee everything myself until all of it was going smoothly."
’He has it rough too.’
She thought he did not have that much work to do since there were only a few magicians. Instead, it meant he had more work to do since there were a few people they could rely on.
Arabella was horrified to know his routine had been eating and working this whole month. He only had short naps every few days.
She eyed him from head to foot. He still looked perfectly fine aside from looking pale. His skin and hair were mighty fine.
If she was the one to do what he did, she would look horrible from lack of sleep.
"Shouldn’t you get some rest then?" Arabella suggested.
"I already did. I just woke up from a nap."
[Is she intentionally diverting the topic? I was the one who asked if she was fine. Just earlier, she was kissing her wedding ring.]
"Y-you saw that?!" Arabella felt the heat rise to her cheeks.
’Ah, so embarrassing. I thought no one was looking at me. I must be more careful.’
"Do you miss His Majesty that much?" Alwin inquired and Arabella glared at him, thinking he was making fun of her.
But when she looked at his face, he was simply asking an honest question.
Arabella glanced out the window, to the distant mountains, and sighed deeply.
"I do."
"You were fine with him not coming back longer than this in the past."
Alwin was referring to their past life.
"I wasn’t. I badly missed him back then."
She was never fine during those times. She missed him so bad she asked herself repeatedly why he married her in the first place if he would leave her alone most of the time.
"Then, does kissing your wedding ring help at all?"
’Is he mocking me?’
She eyed him again, but it was another honest question.
"It doesn’t."
"Then why kiss it?" Alwin had never longed for someone, so he did not understand.
’How should I explain to someone who never felt these feelings before?’ Arabella sighed deeply.
"I just felt like kissing it, so I did. It is what says I’m his wife no matter where he is."
Yes, her wedding ring was so important. She had been staring at it quite a lot these days when she was alone thinking of Ferdinand.
"But your aura right now is screaming that you are his wife. No matter where you go, everyone who would understand you’re his."
"What do you mean?"
"You reek of His Majesty’s mana," Alwin pointed out matter-of-factly.
"Ah right," Arabella forgot about that. Alvis thought about it too to the point he mistook that the one in the study was Ferdinand in his human body.
"But even so, this ring is still special. It’s my only connection with him when he’s not around," Arabella touched it affectionately.
"I see," Alwin nodded his head.
[So that was why my lord often kissed his ring back then. She’s even touching it the way my lord did to his ring.]
"Eh?! Ferdinand did? When?" Arabella perked up when she heard that.
"In the previous life. He often stared at his ring and kissed it. He caressed it every now and then too," Alwin revealed.
[It was how we knew he was thinking about her again. And he does it quite too often.]
"I see. I wasn’t the only one missing him back then," Arabella smiled. Perhaps, in Umbra, Ferdinand was also thinking about her right now.
She kissed her ring one more time.
"Ugh. Don’t do it in front of me. I kept seeing His Majesty kiss his ring in the past," Alwin was weirded out by it. He still didn’t understand how important it was to couples.
"I wish you’d fall in love with someone, so you’d understand," Arabella said in exasperation.
"No thanks. I don’t want to act the way lovers do. It’s so weird. I’m going to stay single my whole life," Alwin declared.
"Let’s wait and see. Who knows, you may fall in love harder than we do?"
"Never."
Alwin was disgusted by the idea.
