Chapter 486: Passing the Blame to Others to Feel Less Guilty
[That’s right. The knights can take the blame since it was their job to guard the whole duchy. Now all we need is to find a way to silence Dimo.]
Sonia and the Head Butler were both relieved that Duke Olivier thought of it as the knights slacking off in their job.
’That’s what you think. I’m not done yet,’ Arabella internally smirked.
She still had a lot to say to indirectly suggest that Sonia and the Head Butler may have something to do with what happened to Dimo.
"Oh, and by the way, does your family have a history related to magic?" Arabella asked Duke Olivier.
"No. Your Majesty. I haven’t heard of my parents or grandparents having any magic abilities. My son though, seems to be able to use magic, so perhaps, my late wife’s family may have had it in the past and it manifested in my son," Duke Olivier explained.
"That’s true. When we found Demetrius the burn marks on his skin were from his own fire. He’s able to use fire magic unconsciously. When he woke up, he was in a panic and was hysterical. He thought we were trying to kill him, so he begged for his life but at the same time released fire all around him," Arabella added.
"That was really magic?!" Sonia couldn’t stop gasping.
She did not know Duke Olivier served as the Princess’ guard and adviser in Medeus just to acquire books about magic from the King of Loranne.
"Yes. I heard Demetrius seems to have a lot of mana which was why it can be triggered by his emotions easily," Arabella added.
"I see. He did accidentally set fire to a huge part of the castle the day he ran away. He often had nightmares, so he probably had one that day... Oh my, could that be why he ran away? Maybe, he did not want to be scolded? But we did not even scold him when he accidentally set fire to his room just a day before that." Sonia wanted to make Dimo look bad.
"Dimo is that why you ran away? You don’t have to leave the castle even if you made a mistake," Duke Olivier eyed his son.
"No. I don’t even know I set fire to the castle," Dimo looked around, checking the walls and the roof.
There was no sign of the fire since Sonia already had everything repaired so it wouldn’t be evident that the fire began right outside the Head Butler’s room.
Dimo shrank back and made himself look smaller when he noticed Sonia’s gaze.
"Did you know your ability was magic?" Arabella inquired.
"No, Your Majesty. I heard it was dangerous," Dimo pouted.
After all, all he knew was he called a monster.
"I see. It is indeed dangerous when not controlled. But it can also be useful in many ways when utilized properly," Arabella rubbed Dimo’s back since he was looking grim again.
They need to leave this place soon so Dimo can relax. He was even holding in his breathing due to Sonia and the Head Butler’s presence.
"For now, His Majesty’s magician stopped it from going out of control. But this child needs to be educated about his ability soon. The more he grows, the stronger his magic will become so it’s better to teach him how to control it now or else it will be destructive in the future."
"Ah, yes. I thought so too, Your Majesty. So, I have recently acquired magic books after completing my tasks in Medeus. I was thinking my son may be able to learn from those," Duke Olivier revealed, and Sonia’s eyes widened.
[So, he cast away his pride and went and humbled himself to the King of Loranne to acquire magic books for Dimo? He could do that for him but not for Brent and Monica?] Sonia eyed her husband.
Arabella learned from Sonia’s thoughts that she once asked the Duke to use his connections so Brent and Monica could study in the best school for nobles in the capital of Loranne.
But Duke Olivier was prideful and refused. He insisted on having the two be tutored at in their duchy instead just like Dimo.
’How can she be so shameless and feel bad about that when she only wanted to send the two to the capital so she could stay there with the Head Butler?’ Arabella internally sighed since she heard Sonia’s complete thoughts.
Sonia did not even ask for that favor for the children but for her own selfish reasons. Simply because she could not spend as much time as she wanted with the Head Butler.
’If I hadn’t committed so many sins in my past life, I would not even think she deserves to be given a chance.’
[I knew it. I really must get rid of that boy so my Brent and Monica will have a future here. Even though he thinks that they were indeed his children, he’s always more worried about Dimo.]
Sonia thought that even if for instance, Brent and Monica were the Duke’s children, he would never love them as much as he does Dimo. She was passing the blame to others so she would feel less guilty for what she had committed.
’In the first place, the two were not even the Duke’s children. Why ask him to love them as much as Dimo when you know they were not his’. Maybe, with his instinct as a father, he felt it,’ Arabella thought.
But she recalled the Duke’s shocked face the day he was informed of Sonia’s cheating. And even more so when he was told that Brent and Monica were not even his children but his nephews instead.
Internally, the Duke did not want to believe it at first. He wanted to deny it. So, he thought that maybe, Dimo could have misheard.
But the evidence Alwin gathered proved it. There was a record of the Head Butler and Sonia talking about it.
