Chapter 390: Monster Attack in Palace Grounds
Chapter 390: Monster Attack in Palace Grounds
The venue of today’s celebration was a hall detached from the main building of the Grand Palace.
It was a grand hall with glass roofs in the middle that made it bright and sunny.
It also had wide glass windows for fresh air.
Magic was used to maintain a comfortable temperature inside so it wouldn’t be too hot or cold.
They were inside the palace walls which had never been breached by outside attacks. Thus, everyone was assured this place was safe.
They did not expect monsters to pop up inside the walls.
Monsters had never been sighted in the palace itself.
The monster sightings in Medeus lately were on the outskirts so they did not expect it would happen in the palace grounds.
Those who had not seen monsters before thought the sound they heard was merely from huge beasts that were probably captured by knights or hunters and had escaped.
It still sent them fear though since they barely encountered beasts with such loud roars.
While everyone was frozen by the loud roars, Ferdinand was up on his feet in a second and Arabella followed suit.
Her husband wrapped an arm around her waist, and it was tighter than usual.
His free hand touched his ring that could turn into a sword. He was prepared to fight in case necessary.
Icarus, Benjamin, Andrew, and others who had experienced fighting monsters were quickly on their feet as well. They were on alarm too and were ready to engage in battle.
Meanwhile, everyone else scrambled to the hallways and windows to check what the loud roars were about.
Screams of terror followed as they saw the monsters outside.
Most royals and nobles had never seen monsters. Except for those who directly went to the frontlines during battles and expeditions and encountered monsters.
Thus, most of the attendees were in a panic.
The hall became chaotic in a matter of seconds.
Ferdinand’s arm around Arabella’s waist tightened as he looked around.
He was able to sense where monsters were without having to see them.
[They have surrounded the venue.
It seems whoever sent them planned to trap us here.
Are they trying to kill everyone while we are gathered like this?
How cowardly.]
"Arabella, we need to get out of here."
Ferdinand checked if she was calm enough to walk and she nodded.
She glanced at the exit which Rendell and Alwin had already secured.
’Will my family be able to get out safely?’ Arabella wondered as she looked around for her parents.
What if they could not?
What if they get trapped in here and die from the monster attack?
Arabella did not want to regret anything anymore.
She was finally speaking with her parents again after two long decades. She didn’t want to lose them now.
Benjamin was standing in front of their parents prepared to fight the monsters in case they were able to come close.
She heard from his thoughts that he had repeatedly experienced fighting monsters who attacked her before.
They glanced her way, also worried about her.
She tensed when she saw her mother looking so pale.
[They are not here to attack Arabella again, right?] her mother thought.
Arabella gulped when she recalled her older brother thinking about it before.
Monsters had been repeatedly attacking her since she was a child, but she had no memories of it.
It was among the reasons they decided to marry her off to Ferdinand, who was known as the strongest man in Eliora.
Her mother feared that the monsters were here for her again since she almost died from monsters repeatedly in the past.
Yet, Arabella still had no memories of it.
But why would these monsters be here to attack her?
Ferdinand clearly thought that whoever sent these monsters thought of killing everyone here, not just her.
Monsters didn’t attack her in Riva either, so these monsters were not here for her.
This attack would either be from Fynnia or Griffith. And their goal was probably to weaken Eliora by killing the rulers who were gathered here.
But since Lindon, who had summoned monsters like this as Hayden, was from Fynnia, Arabella could figure it must be one of his companions.
’They must be here for him.’
Alwin had imprisoned him, and they must have finally noticed he did not return, nor reported anything the past few days.
Or they have finally heard that Jacob, whom Lindon had occupied, was executed and Lindon did not come back.
Maybe, it took some time to reach them, so they were only acting now.
"Don’t worry. Riley will keep your family safe," Ferdinand assured her when he noticed her looking at her family.
"Thank you," Arabella was relieved he thought of her family too.
Ferdinand gestured and Rendell, Alwin, and Riley walked to them.
Alwin and Riley were both disguised as knights.
Ferdinand began giving instructions.
Arabella remained silent and just listened.
"Riley, stay with my wife’s family and ensure they are safe no matter what happens.
If you can keep them close to us so I can see them, then all the better.
Try not to reveal to everyone here that you are a magician."
As far as everyone here knew, Alwin was Ferdinand’s only magician.
"Yes, Your Majesty," Riley bowed and headed in her parents’ direction.
Arabella was grateful that her husband even prioritized giving instructions for her family’s safety before anything else.
"Alwin, you stay with me and Arabella. But only act when necessary."
"Yes, Your Majesty."
{Do not leave His Majesty’s side no matter what happens.
I can’t have you getting hurt again and making His Majesty panic.}
Alwin gave her a warning while looking outside.
{Of course. Where else would I go in a situation like this?
I can’t do anything about this so of course, I’ll stay where I am safe.
I’m not an idiot.}
Arabella raised a brow at Alwin, and he told her not to look in his direction since Ferdinand was on alert right now so his senses were more heightened and would likely notice.
"Rendell, you will fight with the knights and show off. I want everyone to see what you can do."
"Yes, Your Majesty," Rendell bowed and began walking to the exit again.
This made both Benjamin and Icarus frown.
[Why is he making her guard leave?]
Benjamin pondered over Ferdinand’s reasoning. He had never seen Ferdinand in a fight before so he did not know what he could do even if he had heard he was strong.
[Is he making her guard leave so he can protect her himself?
He’s still trying to show off at a time like this?] Icarus wondered.
He thought Ferdinand was being childish instead of prioritizing her safety.
However, Icarus understood that these monsters were easy to kill for Ferdinand since they had fought monsters together before.
Icarus wanted to go near Arabella to ensure she was safe but his younger sister was here so he walked in his sibling’s direction instead.
He knew Ferdinand could protect her anyway.
’Why did Ferdinand want Rendell to show off?’ Arabella watched Rendell who met up with Valeria’s Grand Knight Commander at the exit.
Ferdinand sent the commander instructions through telepathy.
"Let’s head out too," Ferdinand pointed in the direction of the exit.
But what about everyone here?
Arabella saw the monster through Alwin’s eyes, and they were huge. Just like the biggest ones that Hayden, or rather, Lindon had sent to attack when they were in Safiro.
All the attendees here were royals or nobles with high standing in their respective kingdoms.
The Kings and Queens, and even some of the Crown Princes like Benjamin were here as well.
It would be a big blow to Eliora if a lot of them died here.
Was it alright to just save themselves and leave everyone else?
Alwin and Riley could easily protect everyone here. She understood that much now.
"C-can we get Sera with us? She’s pregnant," Arabella asked in a not-so-confident voice since she felt somewhat embarrassed to ask another person to be protected by them when she could not do anything herself.
She at least didn’t want a pregnant woman who wanted to get along with her to die here. Thus, she had to ask even if she felt shameless.
"Ah, Alwin will get her if her husband cannot protect her."
Ferdinand glanced at Sera who was already in a panic and was sobbing in Andrew’s arms.
’Right, Andrew had also fought monsters before.’
She didn’t know how strong he was exactly and if he could kill monsters as huge as the ones outside, but the knights of Lahar would do their best to protect them.
"Don’t worry too much.
You have seen me and the knights fight monsters before, right?
There’s nothing to fear," Ferdinand assured her.
"Yes, of course. Everyone is so strong," Arabella nodded her head.
"We have joined the Council so our knights will fight the monsters with theirs.
We will also help those who cannot protect themselves.
The royals here have mages disguised as knights as well."
Ferdinand looked around and she followed his gaze.
Knights had already gone to their lieges and Ferdinand said among them were magicians in disguise just like Alwin and Rendell.
"Right. Of course, everyone had prepared measures against things like this," Arabella was relieved.
Ferdinand and their knights did not need to protect everyone if they could fend for themselves.
She’d rather be the only one here that cannot do anything in a situation like this.
