Reborn as a Mind-Reading Empress -
Chapter 389: Last Dance
Chapter 389: Last Dance
After the announcements, the musicians began playing songs for dancing.
The newly engaged couples were the first ones to dance this time as a form of showing off their ties and making the engagement official.
After they were done, everyone was invited to join.
Ferdinand was busy conversing with other rulers, so Arabella busied herself as well.
She wanted him to be her first dance today since it was the last day of the Assembly.
However, even though she was conversing with other queens, there were those who came to ask for a dance.
Arabella had no choice but to dance with them so she wouldn’t seem haughty because she was an Empress loved by her husband.
She internally complained when Ferdinand saw her dancing with others and did not react.
He didn’t mind her having her first dance today with someone else.
He simply kept conversing with the kings.
But then again, it was the last day of the Assembly, so she figured there must be things they wanted to settle.
Arabella herself had gone to say her well wishes and goodbyes to the other queens.
And since Valeria had joined the Council, they promised to send her letters.
She agreed since maintaining communication with other queens would help her stay updated with the happenings in each territory.
"Shall we dance, Your Majesty?" Andrew asked to dance with her next.
Andrew was smiling politely so she felt extended her hand to him next.
It was better to dance with him than the others since Andrew was not thinking about lewd thoughts about her while they danced.
She had tried not to dance with those who were eyeing her with lewd thoughts about her, but she could not say no to all of them.
Andrew was already the tenth person she danced with tonight, yet her husband was still busy.
"You have been glancing in your husband’s direction since earlier," Andrew noticed.
"Oh my, was it that obvious? My apologies. I didn’t mean to be rude."
Arabella was relieved Andrew was no longer into her and simply mentioned it because he noticed.
"It’s alright. And I don’t mean just now. Since earlier while you were dancing with the others. I figured you must be exhausted but your husband is busy to come to get you, so I thought I’d dance with you and escort you back to your seat."
Andrew didn’t dance much and was on his table with Sera which was why he noticed.
Sera could not dance much since her pregnancy was a bit sensitive, so they only dance a bit and returned to their seats.
Andrew didn’t dance around with the others since he was worried Sera might get dizzy or nauseous with the food or the scent here.
While the couple were conversing, they noticed that Arabella hadn’t sat down once ever since she was invited to a dance.
And that she had been glancing at Ferdinand, but her husband was occupied.
Thus, Andrew decided to help her get a short break since her foot must be aching.
He was still considerate of her.
Arabella wanted to tell him he didn’t need to worry about her anymore.
But her foot was indeed starting to ache.
Due to attending balls quite often, she could still dance ten more times or so, but she would rather sit down and take a break indeed.
"Thank you. You are so kind. I hope you asked your wife first," Arabella worried that this might make Sera feel bad.
"It’s alright. She was the one who urged me to help you since she also understood how tiring it was to wear shoes like yours and dance for a while."
"Oh, then please send her my thanks. I was indeed beginning to get tired," Arabella glanced at Sera and the latter smiled.
Arabella smiled back and gestured her thanks.
’She’s so kind. Would she be alright if she’s this kind to someone who was once her lover’s ex?’
She was the one who was beginning to worry for Sera.
Andrew had other exes aside from Arabella after all.
If he was this kind and considerate to all of them, would Sera still be fine with it?
She learned from Sera’s thoughts that she wanted to maintain a good relationship with her and likewise show everyone they were on good terms.
The dance with Andrew was finally over and he was about to send her back to her seat when another hand was extended to her.
"I figure, you must be tired. But may I dance with you for a bit? I promise I will send you back to your seat once the song is over."
Arabella and Andrew glanced at each other.
Andrew wasn’t sure what to do since the one who asked her was Icarus.
Icarus had a much higher rank than he does.
’Did he overhear what we talked about?’
Arabella did not notice him approach.
She smiled at Andrew, and he nodded, understanding that he could return to his seat.
She then extended her hand to accept Icarus’ invitation, but a familiar hand grabbed her wrist.
She felt an arm snake around her waist.
It was her husband.
Ferdinand was still with the other kings earlier but now he was here beside her so quickly when Icarus approached her.
She thought he wasn’t looking her way, but he must have been pretending not to be looking every time she glanced his way.
"No. My wife is already exhausted. She will dance with me and not dance with anyone else anymore," Ferdinand replied for her and had another glaring contest with Icarus.
’Here they go again,’ Arabella internally sighed as she felt everyone’s eyes on them.
She was pondering over a way to break the two apart when someone else came to her rescue.
It was her father.
"Then, may I dance with my daughter instead? I won’t be able to dance with her for a while once she returns to Valeria."
Ferdinand and Icarus both instantly fixed their expressions and smiled politely when her father came.
And they both agreed to let him be the one to dance with her instead.
Still, when her father was not looking, they glared at each other one last time before returning to their seats.
Arabella sighed in relief and thanked her father for helping her out.
Her father also sighed.
He was clearly troubled about it too since it might affect how the two responded to issues in the Council in the future.
Arabella also hoped it wouldn’t cause problems in the future either.
Rather, she hoped Icarus would fall in love with someone else and get married.
In the past life, because he could not get over her, Icarus faked a marriage with one of his ministers. A duchess from of the most powerful dukedoms in Reverio.
Icarus offered power if she could serve as queen and accept the first son of Icarus’ younger sibling as the next king.
The duchess only wanted to increase the power of her household, so she was fine with the arrangement.
They pretended that the duchess had miscarried repeatedly and thus they both decided to adopt the first son of Icarus’ younger sibling as their son and be the next heir.
Once all the ministers had agreed and the prince had shown prowess and gained enough supporters, the two divorced as agreed upon.
The duchess got married to someone else after two years and had children.
Icarus, meanwhile, just focused on raising his nephew as the next king and ruling over Reverio.
This was why when Arabella went to seduce Icarus, he was free to do as he pleased since he was back to being single.
Arabella thought it was rather sad for Icarus to be alone in this life again, yearning for a love he was not able to grasp.
She hoped he would find someone else to fall in love with and marry.
He deserved to be happy too after all.
. . .
Arabella’s father returned her to her seat once their dance was over.
Ferdinand held her hand and searched her eyes.
"You almost danced with Icarus," he complained once her father had left.
"It’s just a dance. I had been avoiding him during the whole Assembly. I didn’t notice him this time since I was tired. I was surprised when he was already beside me and asked for a dance," Arabella explained to her sulking husband.
He brightened up upon hearing she had been avoiding Icarus.
"I see. Let’s dance later when you have rested," Ferdinand kissed the back of her hand.
"Yes. I had been waiting for you," it was Arabella’s turn to pout and pretend to sulk.
[She was?!!]
"I’m so sorry. I wanted to dance with you as soon as the music began but I had matters to discuss with them," Ferdinand clasped both her hands.
"I know. That was why I was waiting," Arabella smiled, and her husband was relieved she wasn’t angry he made her wait.
But they didn’t have the chance to have that dance.
Arabella was about to pick up a wine glass when all of a sudden, the ground shook.
And she heard the now familiar sound of monsters roaring.
