Reborn as a Mind-Reading Empress -
Chapter 282: A Wish for Rest
Chapter 282: A Wish for Rest
Arabella and Ferdinand were kissing on the couch when someone knocked to deliver their food.
Soft foods were prepared for Arabella since she hadn’t eaten anything in three days. Meanwhile, Ferdinand’s was mostly meat as usual.
She ate slowly since they were not in any hurry this time and she was not yet allowed to do work anyway. Her husband could be quite stern when it comes to her health.
"Your body is too weak so you have to take it easy for a few days. I just realized it recently but you seem to be a workaholic. You do not let a day pass without getting some work done. But I won’t let you do that for now," was what Ferdinand said to her.
He thought that human bodies were too weak and if he didn’t stop her from working, she might exhaust herself to death.
’I’m not a workaholic. I’m just used to doing my job as an Empress every single day for two decades. It had become a habit.’
But likewise, in this life, she had to prove herself worthy of being Valeria’s Empress. Only this way can she gain power and trust so the people would listen to her. Only then will her words have value and real authority.
If she doesn’t work hard, she would just be Ferdinand’s beautiful wife. She would have no real power and authority over the people. If she continued to just be the pretty princess that caught their Emperor’s eye, she would not be able to gain their trust.
All her actions would be limited to being Ferdinand’s wife. In the case that Ferdinand and Raymond were both not around, she would still be protected but her voice and opinions would not be listened to. It would be bad during emergencies.
And most especially, if she truly wanted to repent for her crimes and do good in exchange, she needs to be influential enough to be able to help Valeria and the people that she had once made to suffer.
"Can I look out the window now? I’m full and well rested," Arabella said once they were done drinking tea after their meal
Ferdinand nodded and offered his hand this time. He escorted her to the window as if someone would pop out of nowhere even in his room and take her away.
It’s not bad to be taken care of this much though. It just sometimes makes her worry that everything was going too well.
After all, once you get a taste of a bit of happiness, you begin to fear it will be taken away from you.
Now that she thought about it, she got poisoned and almost died when everything was finally going well between them.
It was so scary to be complacent and think the future would be just fine. Because it was usually in the most unexpected times that trouble comes.
Still, it’s not bad to pamper herself sometimes and just enjoy not doing anything.
They were finally by the window and she was wide-eyed at what greeted her.
"Wow! Are we in one of the highest rooms? The view here is so good," Arabella gasped as she took in the sight before her.
"Yes, I like high places."
Ferdinand’s palace that she had seen in her dream was gargantuan and vast. And she was currently in one of the highest rooms which had a good view of the island.
If this was the human realm, the vast land near the palace would be occupied by a lot of houses and other buildings.
But this place wasn’t. The land near the palace was rich with greenery instead. It was a forest with towering trees on most parts. However, the areas closest to the palace were beautifully designed gardens. She was able to spot fields of flowers as well.
And most importantly, the blue sea that surrounded the island was beautiful and mystic. If she would live here one day, she would be able to watch the sea every single day.
The blue sea was such a calming sight. The sunset and sunrise here would surely be breathtaking. It was indeed tempting to just live here now.
The air felt different as well. It was fresher and sweeter.
This place felt ideal for raising children. Fermin was quite a playful child. He would love exploring here and there. He wouldn’t have to avoid the nobles as well who would be eager to get some kind of influence and control over the heir of Valeria early on.
’Did Ferdinand play with Fermin here? Which part here did they have their training sessions?’
Now, Arabella was even more curious about the details of her past life that she did not know about. And Alwin was the only other person who remembers.
"Ferdinand, you won’t go back to Medeus yet, right?" Arabella just had an idea. This was their chance to continue their conversation from the last time.
"I won’t. I have already sent Raymond to take care of things."
"I see, then can you tell me more about yourself and this place? I want to know more about you," Arabella asked. They haven’t had the chance to talk about it further ever since he admitted he was a dragon.
"Alright," Ferdinand kissed the back of her hand and led her to the balcony where they could continue marveling at the view.
Her husband then continued his tale from the time they were in the carriage when they were on their way to Medeus.
"This may seem quite impossible but this is the truth. As I told you last time that I was a pureblooded dragon. And I wasn’t just any dragon. I was among the first creations of the God of Dragons."
Ferdinand finally told her that the Former Emperor and Empress were not his real parents. That he was never conceived but created instead. He was among the first generation of dragons that the God of Dragons created.
The First Generation comprised of only ten dragons and Ferdinand was among them. At first, all they did was sleep, eat, and hunt.
They were made territorial as well so they didn’t like other creations getting near them. They had no emotions or will, but a strong instinct. They fought whoever got close to their abode.
They were not as strong at first since they took longer to grow over time. They experienced a lot of difficulties and defeats but it was what made them stronger.
When they grew and matured, they became top of the food chain and became the most dangerous predators in each of their territories and the neighboring lands. And when they encounter each other they fight until one of them was not able to fight anymore or one decides to leave.
Aside from their natural affinity with fire, the dragons learned magic based on the environment they were in. The more they left they expanded their territory, the more magic they learned as they experienced all sorts of things.
But as thousands of years passed by, despite learning various things, unlike other creations, the dragons never procreated.
No new generation was born out of them despite the God of Dragons creating five males and five females.
All the dragons did was fight and compete with each other even when they finally learned to use magic and learn to shift to various forms including that of humans.
Humans and other races had already flourished and greatly increased their population but the dragons did not have even one offspring. None of them decided to live together as well since they were fine on their own.
The God of Dragons realized he made a mistake when creating them and didn’t include the desire for reproduction to prolong their race. And he made them too strong and too long-lived that they didn’t really need to reproduce.
Due to this, the God of Dragons created a second batch which he ensured to be like humans and other races which had emotions and sought to reproduce. He also greatly lessened their lifespan compared with that of the first generation.
The second generation was a success. Though it still took time, when they grew up and reached maturity, they copulated and had children. Thus, a new generation of dragons who were conceived were born.
The dragons still had the longest lifespan when compared to other races though. Even after thousands of years, their population did not grow much due to their long lifespan.
Dragons usually just had one to three children as well.
Still, due to their strength, knowledge, and experience gained through their long lives, dragons ruled the world.
With the strongest ruling, there was peace among the various races due to the fear of triggering the wrath of dragons.
Meanwhile, the First Generation of Dragons were forgotten by their creator and left to their own devices. They had grown immeasurably anyway and had become too strong and powerful due to their long lives.
They grew to have emotions as well but it gradually faded over time.
Soon, the First Generation reached a point where they realized they had already done everything they wanted in this world. They grew bored and weary.
After witnessing the destruction and creation of other races several times, they realized they had nothing more to do. It was tiring to keep watching the over the world when they had no purpose.
After all, they had watched several generations of dragons die but they were still alive when they should have been the first to go.
The world seemed to be a repetitive cycle of death and rebirth to them. So many of the dragons and beings they knew had already died. Yet, they were still here.
Why?
They wanted to rest and simply vanish as the others did.
They no longer wished to exist.
