Chapter 206: It’s Dimo [Bonus Chapter]
[Her lap?! I’ve seen lovers do it before. They looked like they were enjoying it. Was it that good?] Ferdinand was curious.
’Enjoyment is not the point. You just use my lap as your temporary pillow,’ Arabella wanted to say.
Ferdinand maneuvered so he could lay his head on her lap.
[It feels so nice! So this is why they like doing this. I feel an odd sense of comfort and safety, as if I’m home. Even my room in Estrella didn’t feel this good. It’s as if she was wrapping me in her arms. She smells so good too. Her scent is enveloping me and I can feel the warmth and softness of her body.]
"Get some sleep. This will help," Arabella covered his eyes with an eye mask she was supposed to use so he would not be distracted by other things.
"But, what about you?"
[I’m not really sleepy. I just want to keep watching her and enjoy her company.]
"I will read a book," Arabella covered his eyes again when he tried to remove the eye mask. She had brought several books with her to read during the journey.
[She prefers a book over me?] Ferdinand wondered but he silently obeyed and went pondering over things.
[Two years ago, I was tired of all the routine work I had been doing here in the human realm. I wanted to go home and sleep for all eternity since there was nothing left to do for me. But I met her that one time and I knew, I wanted her with me for the rest of my life.]
’He truly already felt that way when we had just met?’ Arabella gulped.
Ferdinand recalled wanting to be with her just a bit longer so he uncharacteristically offered to escort her to Lobelius. Ferdinand, Raymond, and Alwin apparently missed a lot of work they were scheduled to do because of that.
But Ferdinand didn’t want to leave Arabella with her "weak" knights who cannot even protect her from "weak" monsters so Alwin and Raymond agreed.
Arabella’s knights were not weak at all though. They were among the elite knights of Lobelius. And according to her knights, the monsters they encountered were so much stronger than they usually were.
Ferdinand and his knights’ strength were simply on a whole different level.
When they reached Lobelius, Ferdinand apparently wanted to accept Arabella’s offer for tea and a thank you party for them just so he could be with her more but Raymond warned him he was not in his real appearance.
Raymond emphasized that Arabella might take a liking to Elmir instead of him so Ferdinand had no choice but to return to Valeria.
’I should not mention I had a crush on Sir Elmir then,’ Arabella reminded herself so Ferdinand would not have any reason to be jealous of Elmir too.
To the sixteen-year-old her, Sir Elmir was akin to a hero who saved her when she was in dire need.
It was akin to the love stories in books; a damsel in distress saved by a knight. Her maids were so excited about it.
But everyone soon forgot about Elmir since they never met again. Her knights never forgot about it though since it was the greatest challenge they had in their career.
Her knights even searched for the three in Hazania but never found them so the reward her parents were supposed to give them were sent to Hazania’s Knights Order.
[I still don’t get how this works, but being away from her is so painful. I was an idiot for leaving her side of my own volition. Being this close to her feels nice. I wish we could have more times like this.]
Arabella stroked Ferdinand’s hair and he liked it, though he was so surprised at first that he tensed. He gradually relaxed and enjoyed it. Soon he was yawning.
[This is so relaxing. It feels too good that it’s making me sleepy.]
Soon, his thoughts became silent and his breathing became even. She knew he fell asleep.
A smile crossed Arabella’s lips and she focused on reading a book, checking every few minutes if Ferdinand was comfortable and still sleeping soundly.
However, about two hours later, the carriage stopped and Ferdinand suddenly sat up.
"What’s going on?!" he looked around in alarm.
[I fell asleep?! Was I that exhausted?]
"How long was I asleep?"
"Just about two hours," Arabella held his hand since he seemed so alarmed.
"I see. My apologies, it must have been hard for you to move," Ferdinand glanced at her lap.
"It’s alright. I was just reading a book anyway," Arabella assured him and Ferdinand sighed in relief.
"Rendell, why did we stop?" he inquired next. They were not supposed to stop here yet. There was a scheduled stop at an inn.
"There is an unconscious child in the middle of the road, Your Majesty," Rendell explained.
[That’s unusual. I thought no one was supposed to be on this road and the places nearby while we are traversing.] Ferdinand frowned.
"A child?!" Arabella was more focused on that. "Is he alright? Why is he lying in the middle of the road?"
"He seems to be injured. Alwin is currently checking, Your Majesty."
When it was verified that it was just a child who had passed out due to exhaustion and injuries, Arabella wanted to see for herself so they got out of the carriage.
The child had burn marks, one eye was swollen, and one of his arms was broken. He was not wearing any shoes too so both of his foot was bleeding. His clothes were bloodied and singed too.
"How horrible! Who would do this to a child?" Arabella’s brows knitted. She was reminded of Marie’s child back in Prudencia whom she witnessed getting whipped.
"He seems to have run quite the distance despite his injuries," Alwin said as he supported the child and healed him.
The maids brought towels to clean the child’s face which was covered in soot. Arabella was wide-eyed when she saw his clean face. Especially when he opened his eyes.
"Dimo?!"
He was still a child but she was sure this was Dimo.
[Isn’t that the name of the mage she had with her in the past? No, this is indeed him!] Alwin frowned and scrutinized Dimo’s face.
Arabella covered her mouth the instant she realized she said it out loud. But it was too late.
"You know him?" Ferdinand inquired.
"I... I have met him before. I forgot where but I think I’ve met him before," Arabella reasoned.
[Is that really so? She looks tense. Is it because the Young Master was close to this age when he died? Or, could it be... Does she also have memories of the past?] Alwin was wide-eyed at the realization and Arabella turned pale.
