Rebirth to take revenge -
Chapter 137: Sister
Chapter 137: Sister
At her words, both Josh and Alex stiffened, caught off guard. "Kind" was not a word typically associated with Josh, and it brought a complex look to his eyesInitially planning to leave, he paused, turned, and walked back toward Claire’s bedside.
Alex, observing this shift, felt a prickling sensation at the back of his neck. He massaged his temples, feeling a wave of irritation.
Josh pulled a chair next to the bed and sat down, his expression turning serious. "There’s something I want to tell you," he said, looking directly at Claire."What’s wrong?" Claire blinked her big eyes and asked.
Josh fell silent for a moment at her words before speaking slowly, "I am your brother."
Claire was stunned and instinctively turned to look at Alex. Seeing Alex turn his head to the side, as if agreeing with Josh, Claire’s eyes widened in surprise.
"B-Brother? How is that possible? Are you crazy?"
Josh’s lips curled bitterly at her words, and he said, "I’m not crazy! I just want to tell you that you are a member of the Greg family."
As he spoke, his eyes flickered with an indescribable emotion, difficult to read.
Claire stared at Josh blankly, not knowing what to say for a moment. She had thought that Josh only saw her as a tool, but she never expected him to reveal that she was a member of the Greg family. But how could that be possible?
In her memory, her mother had only one daughter—herself—and only gave birth to her after marrying into the Smith family. Her father should be Sebastian, so how could she be part of the Greg family?
Claire grew nervous and voiced her confusion. Josh’s smile turned ironic as he replied coldly, "At this point, you’re still questioning the information my Greg family investigated?"
Claire’s eyes widened in shock. "What?"
Josh glanced at her and continued, "The person your mother loved was my father, but my father already had obligations and couldn’t be with her. So, she chose to leave and raised the child on her own."
Claire’s heart raced, her disbelief evident. "Are you saying that my mother married Sebastian while already pregnant with me?"
A mix of unwillingness and anger flashed across her face, but sadness overwhelmed her. Josh didn’t deny it, but added indifferently, "She was a kind person, but it’s a pity that kindness doesn’t always extend to everyone."
Hearing this, Claire felt a wave of nausea. Her fists clenched tightly, nails digging into her palms without her noticing. Seeing her pale face and red eyes, Josh frowned and asked, "Are you feeling unwell?"
Claire shook her head. "I just... I just thought of something from the past."
A strange look flashed in Josh’s eyes. "The past?"
Claire pursed her lips, took a deep breath, and tried to control the emotions churning within her. She looked up at Josh and asked, "Mr. Greg, what’s your purpose in telling me all of this? Does the Greg family plan to accept an illegitimate child like me?"
Josh was taken aback at her words, his gaze flickering with an inexplicable light.
After a moment, Claire finally began to recover from the shock. She looked at Josh, probing carefully, "Mr. Greg, are you joking?"
Josh raised an eyebrow at her. "What do you think?"
Claire’s heart sank. "You must have made a mistake. My father’s name is Sebastian Smith. Haven’t you checked?""She was a kind person, but it’s a pity she didn’t treat everyone well."
Hearing this, Claire felt a wave of nausea in her chest. Her fists clenched tightly, nails digging into her palms, though she didn’t realize it. Seeing Claire’s pale face and red eyes, Josh frowned and asked, "Are you unwell?"
Claire shook her head. "I just... I just remembered something from the past."
A strange look flickered in Josh’s eyes. "The past?"
Claire pursed her lips, nodding. She took a deep breath, trying to control the emotions churning in her heart. She looked up at Josh and asked, "Mr. Greg, what are your intentions in telling me this? Do you mean that the Greg family would accept an illegitimate child like me?"
Josh was slightly taken aback by her words, his eyes flickering with an unreadable expression. Finally, he gritted his teeth and replied, "You don’t have to worry. I’ll help you."
Claire’s lips curled into a sarcastic smile. "Don’t bother."
A flash of surprise crossed Josh’s face. "Why, you don’t want to?"
"Heh..." Claire sneered. "What you said is ridiculous."
Josh fell silent.
"The Greg family is so powerful, yet even they have to lower their heads and mind their place. I’m just an orphan. How could I possibly aspire to such heights? Mr. Greg, spare yourself!"
Josh’s face darkened. "I’m not joking."
Claire’s conviction only grew stronger. Josh must have a hidden agenda. "Mr. Greg, don’t forget, I’m already the young mistress of the Miller family."
"My future is already set; I have wealth and status, and I don’t need to rely on anyone else. Isn’t that right?"
Josh frowned at her response, while Alex, standing nearby, couldn’t help but smirk briefly before quickly regaining composure. This girl was clever.
"What you don’t want, I won’t force upon you," Josh replied. "However, since Miss Claire has the blood of the Greg family, my family will never treat you poorly."
Though she said nothing, Josh sensed a faint resistance in her heart. A serious look appeared in his eyes as he continued, "The Greg family has always been fair in matters of justice and loyalty. No matter what, you are still part of our family. When my father saw you, he only wanted to know one thing:
Claire’s eyelids twitched, and a flicker of panic crossed her eyes. "You mean, there were others who killed my mother?"
Josh heard her words but remained silent, his expression confirming Claire’s suspicion. Seeing his response, a chill crept into her heart. "I see. Thank you, Mr. Greg."
A complex look flashed in Josh’s eyes. This woman seemed too calm, not like someone blinded by hatred. He’d thought he was harsh enough toward Claire, but clearly, there was someone even more ruthless.
As Josh continued to stare at her in silence, Claire began to feel a growing sense of unease. She bit her lip and said, "Mr. Greg, is there anything else? If not, I’d like to rest."
Josh nodded and slowly turned to leave. After he left, Claire collapsed onto the bed, covering her chest as she gasped for breath, sweat forming on her forehead. No, she couldn’t afford to panic. She couldn’t be afraid, she reminded herself firmly.
Just then, a warm hand touched the top of her head. "Heal peacefully. I’ll take care of everything else."
Alex’s gentle voice soothed her, slowing her frantic heartbeat. She took a deep breath, adjusting her breathing, and looked up at the man standing before her.
He wore a perfectly tailored black suit that emphasized his striking features. His face was handsome, with sharp, narrow eyes that slanted slightly at the corners, lending him an air of mystery and charm. Claire stared at him, momentarily lost.
"Fool, what’s wrong?" Alex asked, smiling as he reached out to ruffle her hair. His smile widened when he noticed her dazed look.
Claire quickly snapped out of her thoughts and shook her head. "N-nothing," she stammered, turning away from his intense gaze.
Seeing her reaction, Alex’s lips curled slightly. "Good." He pulled a delicate silver key from his pocket and held it out to her. "Take this. It’s from my mother, for you."
Claire was momentarily stunned, staring at the key. "This... this key is..."
Alex handed it to her, speaking calmly, "This is your key to the Greg family mansion. You’re welcome there anytime. I think she would be happy to see you."
"But she refused to see me before," Claire whispered, her voice trembling.
"I think she had her reasons," Alex replied, a hint of sadness in his eyes.
Claire’s eyes welled up with tears as she bit her lip. "I understand. Thank you."
As she clutched the key, pain surged through her heart, as if it had been sliced open. She took a deep breath, struggling to hold back the tears. The memory of being banished from the mansion still stung. And now, with Cole dead, Emma had summoned her, and Alex had given her the key.
She couldn’t help but laugh bitterly. All of this—could it really be Emma’s doing?
Seeing Claire’s pale face, Alex felt a pang of concern. "Our new home has been chosen, but while it’s being renovated, we’ll have to stay at the old Miller family mansion for a bit."
"But if you’re uncomfortable, you don’t have to force yourself. I can take you and Leander elsewhere."
"Are you sure about going on a trip?"
"No need, I promise," Claire quickly responded.
Alex saw her reply and felt a wave of satisfaction.
"Alright, that’s settled then. I’ll arrange everything as soon as possible."
"Okay." Claire wasn’t sure what else to say to Alex, so she simply pursed her lips, stood up, and walked toward the door.
Alex watched Claire’s slender figure disappear, and his eyes narrowed slightly, feeling a sharp pang in his chest.
