Rebirth to take revenge
Chapter 136: Half sister

Chapter 136: Half sister

"I understand, but I want to see her with my own eyes."

"Why?" Alex’s voice grew cold. "I’ve already thanked you for your kindness to Claire. In what capacity does Mr. Greg need to see my wife?"

Josh fell silent at his words.

"Mr. Greg, Claire is my wife. She is my responsibility and obligation. Do you understand?"

Josh remained silent, his gaze lowered. What right did he have to see Claire now? He didn’t even have the courage to stand in front of her.

Seeing Josh’s desolate expression, a surge of anger suddenly rose within Alex. He reached out, grabbed Josh’s shoulder, pinned him against the wall, and said coldly, "Josh, I don’t care what feelings you have for Claire. Maybe she doesn’t love me, but she is my wife now." Alex’s voice was deliberate, each word a declaration.

Josh looked up, a mocking smile curving his lips. "Alex, everyone knows this. You don’t need to repeat it to me." Alex’s face shifted at the remark.

"What do you mean?" he asked through gritted teeth.

"Alex, you are Claire’s husband. She loves you, and that won’t change in this lifetime." A faint smirk tugged at the corner of Josh’s mouth. "Then why are you still...?"

"I’ve never lied, and I don’t need to explain myself to you," Josh replied, unflinching.

"I want to see Claire. The feelings I have for her are those of family," he said with resolve.

For a few seconds, Alex was the first to look away. "Mr. Miller, you’re a smart man. You should know the impact of your actions," he said quietly.

"I know." Josh chuckled lightly. "But I don’t care. I do have ulterior motives—not only because Claire saved me, but also because I owe her too much. I owe her my life."

Alex looked at him, his face becoming increasingly grim. He hadn’t expected Josh to admit this so openly.

But in this world, there are no "what-ifs."

"She is my half-sister, born from the same father but a different mother," Josh said slowly.

"What did you say?" Alex’s eyes widened in shock.

"Claire is my father’s daughter, not Sebastian’s," Josh continued. Alex stared at him, visibly shaken.

"Are you playing me?" he demanded.

"No!" Josh shook his head. "I have no reason to lie about this. Years ago, my father sacrificed Claire and her mother to secure his position as chairman. I don’t want history to repeat itself."

Josh paused, then continued with conviction, "At the very least, I don’t want them to suffer injustice."

"They are innocent, Alex. You shouldn’t burden them with all the sins," he said firmly.

"What are you trying to say?" Alex frowned.

"Don’t you understand?" Josh looked at him.

"I don’t!" Alex shook his head.

"I want to give her everything she deserves. After all, she is a part of the Greg family," Josh explained.

"But she doesn’t need any of that," Alex sneered. "Josh, what makes you think you have the right to give Claire happiness?"

"Do I not have the right?" Josh sneered at his words. "Alex, just because you married her, does that mean her life is any better now?"

"Since you married her, have you cared for her, respected her, or loved her? What have you given her? Only pain and exploitation!"

"You make Claire live in constant fear. You lock her in a room, imprison her freedom, and turn her into a mere possession!" Josh’s voice rose with each accusation.

"I don’t understand what you’re talking about!" Alex snapped coldly.

"Alex, can you honestly say you haven’t used her?" Josh looked him in the eye, the sneer never leaving his face.

"Alex, ask yourself—if I’m not mistaken, you were behind the Smith Group’s bankruptcy!"

"How you did it, I know better than you," Josh said, then turned and walked out of the hospital room, ignoring Alex entirely.

Alex stood motionless for a moment before collecting himself. He hadn’t expected Josh to uncover the truth. He had thought this secret was buried deeply. But even if Josh knew, it wouldn’t affect his relationship with Claire. Thinking this, Alex felt a bit of comfort.

He turned and headed back to Claire’s room. When he entered, Claire lay on the bed with her eyes closed, appearing to rest.

He walked over and sat beside her. Claire seemed to have expected him and opened her eyes, giving a weak smile.

"Are you awake?" Alex asked gently, reaching out to touch her forehead.

"Yes, you’re here," Claire replied softly.

"Are you hungry? I’ll go get you something to eat."

"No need to trouble yourself," Claire said, shaking her head. "What about Leander? Did you bring him here?"

Alex shook his head. "I had someone take him home."

"Is Cole gone?" Claire asked, her voice cautious.

Alex nodded.

"I see. But be careful. Cole had a powerful network behind him. I’m worried they may try to come after you or the Greg family soon."

Alex smiled and gently brushed her hair. "Don’t worry. I have people monitoring Cole’s associates. They won’t dare to act recklessly."

Claire sighed with relief, though a shadow of sadness passed through her eyes.

Noticing this, Alex spoke gently. "Don’t overthink it. Focus on resting and recovering. I’ve already sent people to investigate your grandfather’s case."

Claire forced a small smile. "Thank you."

"Silly girl, you’re my wife. There’s no need to thank me," Alex said tenderly.

Claire said nothing, burying her face in the pillow. Alex felt a pang of sadness, then reached out and wrapped his arms around her. Claire, comforted by his familiar presence, felt a wave of calm wash over her.

News of Cole’s death had surfaced.

"I’ve made arrangements with the hospital. You just need to rest, and I’ll look into Cole’s other people location," Alex assured her, holding her close.

"Alright," Claire said softly.

They chatted about other matters for a while when suddenly, there was a knock at the door. The muffled sound of bodyguards blocking the entry quickly followed.

"Mr. Josh, you cannot enter," one of the guards announced from outside the room.

Josh looked displeased, giving the bodyguards a cold glance. "Is this how A Military Commander treats their savior?" he asked icily. "Step aside!"

Josh’s words made the bodyguards hesitate, but they still gritted their teeth and stood firm, saying, "Sorry, Mr. Greg, but we have orders from General Manager Miller. During Miss Claire’s recovery period, no one is allowed to disturb her."

Upon hearing this, Josh’s expression turned even colder. He glanced back at the men behind him, who immediately stepped forward to remove the bodyguards blocking the door.

The sounds of the dispute naturally reached Claire and Alex inside the hospital room. Claire looked toward the door, puzzled. "Josh? Why is he here?" she asked softly.

Alex glanced in the same direction, his mouth twitching with impatience. After a pause, he said, "He donated blood to you."

Claire’s eyes widened in surprise. Her blood type was rare, and she hadn’t expected Josh to share it.

"I didn’t expect him to also have Rh-negative blood..." she murmured, still trying to process it.

Hearing this, Alex’s gaze darkened. Thinking about what Josh had mentioned earlier, he struggled internally before looking toward the door and saying, "Let him in."

The bodyguard outside was surprised but obediently stepped aside, allowing Josh to enter. Claire watched as he walked in, his presence commanding and intense. Dressed in a black windbreaker, his handsome face carried an air of natural arrogance. His narrow, piercing eyes flickered as he looked at Claire lying on the hospital bed, a complex expression passing over his face.

"Mr. Greg, thank you for donating blood to me," Claire said, gathering herself and smiling.

Josh, however, didn’t respond to her gratitude. Instead, he walked over to the table, picked up a water jug, filled a cup, and handed it to Claire. "Drink some water," he said, his tone faint.

Claire blinked, slightly taken aback, but accepted the cup and drank it in one go. After setting it down, Josh spoke again, his tone a bit stiff. "How is your recovery going? If you need more blood, I’m here."

Josh’s seemingly caring words left everyone in the room momentarily stunned. Claire couldn’t help but pull the corners of her mouth into a faint smile, feeling puzzled by Josh’s unusual attitude. She looked up at him, but Josh quickly averted his gaze.

"I’m fine. Thank you for your concern," Claire said, sounding both grateful and a little helpless.

Josh nodded, looking slightly uncomfortable. "Since you’re awake, I’ll take my leave now."

He turned to go, but Claire quickly stopped him. "Mr. Greg, wait a minute. Thank you for donating blood to me!"

Josh paused, turning back to face her. "Why thank me?" he asked, a touch of hesitation in his voice.

Claire smiled softly. "Of course, I need to thank you. Without your help, who knows what would have happened to me!" She chuckled lightly. "You know, you seem much kinder now. Can I think of you as my lifesaver? If that’s the case, then I must repay you well. Don’t worry; I’ll take full responsibility for Mrs. Greg’s illness."
