Rebirth to take revenge -
Chapter 135: Coma
Chapter 135: Coma
"...I’m fine," Claire struggled to lift her head and smiled at Alex.
Seeing the smile on Claire’s face, Alex’s heart ached, and he couldn’t help but hold her tighter.
"Silly girl, don’t do such foolish things again in the future," he said softly. "I will protect you and your son. I will make sure no one ever bullies you again!"
Claire leaned on Alex’s shoulder, tears streaming down her face. She knew he meant every word.
---
Meanwhile, at the Greg family villa, Josh sat on the living room sofa, listening to a report from his subordinate. His expression shifted constantly as he processed the news.
He glanced down at the information about Claire in his hand, a complicated look crossing his face.
"Young master, there is new information," the subordinate said cautiously. "Miss Claire was caught in the explosion and is being rushed to the hospital."
Josh snapped back to attention, the hint of panic in his eyes betraying his composure.
"Who did it? Cole?" he asked sharply.
The subordinate nodded, confirming Josh’s suspicions. A wave of regret swept over him. If only he had known Claire’s true identity sooner, none of this would have happened. He wouldn’t have let her leave the Greg family in the first place.
But there was no going back now.
"Send someone to track her down immediately. Find Claire!" Josh ordered.
"Yes, sir!" the subordinate replied.
---
Alex wasted no time and quickly got Claire to the hospital.
Outside the operating room of the Western Medical Clinic, Alex stood anxiously at the door. Shortly after, the lights in the operating room went off.
"Doctor, how is she?" Alex asked, his voice filled with urgency.
The doctor glanced at Alex and sighed, shaking his head. "The patient suffered a severe blow to the head and has intracranial bleeding. Although we acted quickly, if the patient has a strong will to live, there is still a chance for recovery."
The doctor finished speaking and turned to leave. Hearing this, Alex felt a flicker of hope in his heart.
"Claire, we will be okay!" he said firmly. "We will survive!"
Upon hearing his words, Claire’s lips curled into a faint, weak smile. Her eyelids grew heavier, and eventually, she fell into a coma.
"Claire!" Alex shouted in shock, immediately checking her breathing. Her breath was shallow, and his worry deepened.
"Hurry, get her to the ward!" Alex ordered, lifting Claire gently and heading toward the ward.
Once there, Alex sat by Claire’s bedside, holding her hand and whispering softly, "Claire, you must hold on!" His face was worn, his eyes bloodshot, and a hint of blue stubble marked his chin.
Grief clouded Alex’s eyes. How could something like this happen to Claire? He dared not think about the worst outcome. If something happened to her, he didn’t want to live without her. He would rather die himself!
At that moment, two nurses approached. "The patient’s condition is critical, and she needs a blood transfusion. Who is the patient’s family member?" one nurse asked.
"I am her husband," Alex quickly responded. "What do you need? I can donate blood."
The nurse shook her head. "No, she needs RH-negative blood."
"RH-negative?" Alex froze. This was the first time he’d heard of such a rare blood type. "I don’t have RH-negative blood," he said, frowning.
"If you don’t have it, please contact your friends or relatives. Time is of the essence," the nurse urged.
"I’ll find it right away," Alex promised, heading off to handle the procedures.
Just then, a voice came from behind him. "I have RH-negative blood. Use mine."
Startled, Alex turned to see Josh standing behind him. Josh’s gaze was cold as he addressed Alex.
"Claire is my grandmother’s attending physician. I don’t want anything to happen to her," Josh said coolly. "Since you can’t help, step aside."
Alex clenched his fists, trying to contain his anger. After Josh’s words, he turned and left.
Alex took a deep breath and resumed his wait outside the operating room. Inside, Claire was prepped for surgery. Josh’s blood was a perfect match for her. Though her injuries weren’t life-threatening, the blood loss had been severe, and the rarity of her blood type made the situation even more dire.
After careful consideration, the doctor decided to use Josh’s blood for the transfusion.
"Sir, please cooperate for the blood transfusion," a nurse said as she approached Josh with a syringe in hand.
Josh nodded and extended his right arm. The nurse swiftly inserted the needle, and fresh red blood began to flow through the tube.
Josh gritted his teeth, staying still throughout the procedure. Only when the nurse removed the needle did he breathe a sigh of relief. He tossed the used syringe into the trash and rolled down his sleeve, revealing his sturdy, wheat-colored skin. His gaze drifted to Claire on the operating table, and a flicker of emotion passed through his eyes.
He hadn’t expected that his blood would save her life. His feelings were conflicted—relieved that he could help but also pained by her condition.
Time passed slowly, each second feeling like an eternity. Half an hour later, the surgery was still ongoing, and sweat had started to form on Josh’s forehead.
"Sir, you should take a break," the nurse suggested.
Josh looked up at her and quietly replied, "No, I’ll wait until she wakes up."
The nurse, seeing his determination, didn’t push further. Time continued to drag on, and before long, the nurse pulled the needle from Claire’s body. Josh’s vision blurred, and he fainted.
When he woke, he found himself lying in a VIP ward. He glanced at the sky outside the window, noticing it was already evening. Slowly, he got up and walked over to the window, gazing at the bustling traffic below. He realized he had fainted from sheer exhaustion.
"Mr. Greg, you’re awake!"
A male doctor, dressed in a white coat, entered the room.
"Yes," Josh answered, then immediately asked, "Doctor, how is Claire?"
"The patient’s condition has stabilized, but a full-body examination is necessary to ensure her recovery. Once the results are clear, we can be more confident," the doctor explained.
"Understood," Josh nodded.
The doctor then added, "Mr. Greg, your phone has been ringing nonstop. It’s your family. Would you like to answer?"
"No, thank you," Josh replied curtly, his focus entirely on Claire’s well-being.
As Josh stood there, his thoughts were filled with uncertainty. Claire had always been a strong person, and he hoped her will to live would pull her through this.
Josh refused.
"But..."
"It’s okay."
"Okay," the doctor stopped speaking.
"Could you please bring me a glass of water? Thank you," Josh requested.
"Sure," the doctor nodded and left the ward.
Josh looked around the empty room, feeling inexplicably lonely. His mood was low, and he was overwhelmed by uncertainty. His emotions were in turmoil. He didn’t know how to face Claire when she woke up. Lying on the hospital bed, his mind swirled with countless thoughts, leaving him unsure of what to do.
"Knock, knock, knock."
At that moment, there was a knock at the door.
"Who is it?" Josh asked.
"It’s me, Alex," came a low voice from outside the door.
Upon hearing the familiar voice, Josh’s eyes widened. It was Alex.
The door to the ward opened, and Alex walked in, holding a cup of warm water.
"Thank you for donating blood to Claire," Alex said, offering the cup to Josh.
Instead of taking the cup, Josh asked, "How is Claire now?"
"The doctor said her injuries aren’t serious, but she’ll need to stay in the hospital for a few days for observation," Alex answered truthfully.
"That’s good," Josh nodded, sighing inwardly. He didn’t notice the scrutinizing look in Alex’s eyes.
"My intuition tells me you donated blood to her not just because she’s Mrs. Miller’s attending physician," Alex’s voice was cold and indifferent.
Josh smiled slightly at his words. "That’s right. I admit, Claire holds a special place in my heart, but that doesn’t change the fact that I donated blood to save her."
Josh’s words were firm. He didn’t deny that his feelings for Claire played a role in his decision to help. But he also hadn’t forgotten that Claire had nearly lost her life protecting him. He already owed her too much.
Josh wasn’t the type of person to repay kindness with ingratitude, so donating blood to Claire was the least he could do. She deserved it.
Alex studied him for a moment before letting out a soft laugh. "Mr. Greg, you should know that she’s my wife."
"Yes," Josh nodded.
Seeing Josh’s calm expression ignited something in Alex. Anger flared in his chest. He wanted to lash out, to punch him.
But reason told him that doing so would be unfair to both of them.
"Thank you, Mr. Greg!"
"This is what I should do!" Josh replied.
The two looked at each other and both smiled bitterly.
"Is Claire... still alive?" After a long silence, Josh suddenly asked.
"She’s still alive," Alex responded.
"That’s good," Josh nodded. "After she wakes up, I want to see her."
"She’s still in a coma, so it may not be convenient," Alex hesitated before replying.
