Chapter 38: Times Up

(At the forest)

Andre notices that it’s almost noon and he start thinking about returning to the camp sight. He pauses and the thought of his family pops up in his head, he clenches his fists before making a decision.

After staring at the sun, he finally turns back and returns to the camp site. He’s hesitant on leaving but knows that he has to keep his end of the deal and return by noon. He takes a while to get back to the site. When he arrives, he finds Simon and Fredric finishing with packing their equipment.

’’It’s about time you made it, we were about to leave you.’’

’’I’m guessing you haven’t found any leads either.’’

’’Unfortunately, no.’’

’’Okay than. We’re ready to go.’’

They all leave the site and are going back to Algoria. In no time they arrive in Algoria and start at the Wachter headquarters to tell them their results about the results. After visiting the headquarters, they went to the Andino residence to deliver the bad news.

Chloe and Sophia start crying after hearing the description of Nana’s death. They carry on explaining about how they couldn’t find the boys.

’’Bullshit!’’

Mr. Andino grabs a vase that’s on the table next to the couch and throws it across the floor, his wife and Chloe are both startled, and she tries to calm him down while his eyes are filled with red.

’’Mr. Andino but we did everything we could-’’

’’The hell you did! If you did so, my son would be here! but he’s not, is he?!’’

’’Honey, I think you should calm down. Nothing’s going to change if we you shout at them.’’

’’You know what? My wife is right, I’m wasting my time trusting fools like you. It’s better if I do it myself.’’

’’Sir with all due respect, that’s prohibited by Algoria law. If you do that without the guild’s license, you’ll-’’

’’I don’t give a fuck about what you and everyone else in your stupid little guild do! I’ll fucking find my son!’’

’’Alex!... Honey, please calm down.’’ Sophia tells him in a commanding tone. ’’Thank you, guys, for telling us about this situation, you may leave now.’’

Two of them leave but Andre remains behind.

’’What are you still doing here? Didn’t my mother say leave?’’

’’I... I wanted to make a request, if you were still interested in searching for your sons?’’

’’What do you want?’’

’’I’m willing to help you search for them with you if you allow me to.’’

’’What? Why?’’

’’Because this is also the reason why I became a Wachter, to help families and people in need. And I’m also a father of two daughters, so I understand the worries of a parent. By the way, compensation won’t be needed I’m willing to do this for free.’’

Andre leaves the room after shaking his hand.

’’ Dad, are you sure about this? You know the government doesn’t take lightly to doing their job for them.’’

It’s sunset and they have everything set to go for their search.

’’What’s your name, by the way?’’

’’Andre Schmidt.’’

’’Alright Mr. Schmidt, let’s get going.’’

The sun is about to set, and they leave the city through the same path that they believe was taken by the boys. After a while in the evening, they find the place where Nana’s corpse is, and they immediately start investigating for more clues.

’’Mr. Andino, may I say we’ve already looked through these parts.’’

’’Doesn’t matter we’ll look again you might have missed something.’’

’’Are you sure sir? I’m pretty sure we were very thorough-’’

’’Are you going to help me or not?’’

He doesn’t bother arguing and starts searching. Alex goes through everything in sight he even looks through Nana’s corpse that being eaten by insects and surrounded by flies. He covers his nose and mouth with a handkerchief and looks around the body to find any clues that might help with their search.

’’I heard that she was a very member of your family, I’m very sorry for your loss.’’

’’Did you find anything?’’

’’No nothing yet.’’

’’Then focus on that please.’’

Andre can see that Alex is trying to act unbothered about it but doesn’t want to press on the situation and let him be. After searching for some time, they couldn’t find anything that would lead them to finding them so move on to another place.

’’This where we decided to turn back.’’

They arrive at the camp site Andre’s crew had set before and rest there.

’’I’ve search North already yesterday, so I just suggest we either go west or east from here. If we want to find anything.’’

’’Did you go and ask the Scyl if they saw anything?’’

’’I doubt they did, since they barely allow outsiders.’’

’’Doesn’t matter whether they were allowed in or not, but someone must’ve seen them around these areas, and they are known to be around here.’’

’’ I don’t know sir; do you really think the Scyl would want to talk to us? What if they just take our belongings or kill us for them.’’

’’I don’t care... but for now, let’s split up, you’ll go look if you find anything west and I’ll go search south.’’

’’Yes sir.’’

Alex drops his bag and pulls out a flare gun and hands it to Andre.

’’When you find them, or your life is in danger shoot this I’ll come to you. I’ll do the same. But if you don’t find anything by sunrise come back to the site and we’ll go ask the people from the Scyl.’’

’’Okay.’’

’’Okay good Mr. Schmidt, we’ve already lost time, get moving. And remember since we’re close to the Scyl they might have traps or wild animals running around so move from above.’’

’’Come on now sir, this isn’t my first rodeo.’’

’’Apologies Mr. Schmidt, let’s get searching.’’
