Chapter 510: Chapter 122: Wang, Don’t Go!_1
But who exactly is the Nether River Patriarch? Ordinary beings, ordinary humans, even a Great Golden Immortal, might not have the opportunity to enter his blood pool for reincarnation.
This time, the Nether River Patriarch set his sights on the garrison of Fenghuo City. He sent someone to kill all the people and took their soldier spirits back with him. The purpose was to create a batch of Asuras to his liking."
Upon hearing this, Qin Shou cursed outright, "Damn! Just because he fancies them, he goes and kills them? Even if he wants the soldier spirits, couldn’t he have waited a few more freaking days? Those old soldiers were clearly not going to last a few more years, and for him, isn’t that just the blink of an eye? Besides, if he wants the soldier spirits, why kill those innocent civilians? Did this bastard get his brain bitten by Dog Xiaotian?"
Zhong Kui, upon hearing this, quickly covered Qin Shou’s mouth and whispered, "Rabbit, be careful, trouble comes from the mouth!"
Qin Shou rolled his eyes but said nothing more, though his heart was truly unsatisfied with the Nether River Patriarch! Those old soldiers had defended their country for decades, yet in death, they couldn’t even die on the battlefield as they wished, instead, they were forcibly taken away—this was utter nonsense! And those innocent people... With these thoughts, Qin Shou’s mind flashed with images of the desolate lake in the city, the women pushing carts towards the battlefield, the children crying at the doorstep as they watched their mothers leave home, and the infants wailing in their cradles...
If it wasn’t for the Nether River Patriarch meddling in this affair, they might still be alive.
But now...
"Crap!" Qin Shou couldn’t help but curse again.
Zhong Kui gave a wry smile and said, "Rabbit, it’s fine to swear here. But once you leave the Netherworld, never curse recklessly. Outside of the great formation, the Nether River is omnipresent. A single word from you could very well bring about a fatal disaster."
Qin Shou glanced at Zhong Kui without making a sound.
Zhong Kui felt a chill down his spine from Qin Shou’s stare, checking himself from left to right, and asked in return, "Rabbit, what are you looking at?"
Qin Shou shook his head and said, "Nothing, hehe..."
Seeing this, Qin Shou understood that Zhong Kui was not the stooge that Cai Yulei had found. He didn’t even know Qin Shou’s identity, let alone that the seemingly omnipotent Nether River Patriarch would not only not actively seek out Qin Shou but would rather never see Qin Shou in his lifetime if possible.
Having determined that Zhong Kui was not a stooge, Qin Shou essentially took Zhong Kui’s words for truth.
To save the old soldiers, it seems he really must make a trip to the Nether River.
Thinking of the Nether River, thinking of the Nether River Patriarch, Qin Shou, though angry, couldn’t help but feel a bit unsure. After all, the other party’s infamy was too great...
Zhong Kui, seeing Qin Shou’s silence, then said, "In half a month, it will be the seventh month and a half, the day when Hell’s negative energy is at its peak. The Netherworld will open the Ghost Gate, letting out some of the negative energy to maintain the balance of negative energy within the Netherworld."
Qin Shou was startled and said, "The seventh month and a half? Isn’t that the Ghost Festival? Isn’t it the birthday of the nether official?"
Zhong Kui chuckled and replied, "Now it is indeed the Ghost Festival, the birthday of the nether official. But it wasn’t always called that; there wasn’t such a festival in the distant past. The main reason was that Hell’s negative energy was too intense, making it easy for extreme Yin to generate Yang, and that’s when the most unpredictable events could easily disturb the peace of the Netherworld.
So, to save trouble, the Netherworld releases some negative energy every year on the seventh month and a half.
Later on, people noticed that after the negative energy was released, it would briefly affect the mortal realm for one night, a night very conducive to ghostly activities. We figured since the gate was open anyway, why not just let those ghosts who had been virtuous in life have a holiday to visit back home?
It was just an idea at first, but later the nether official came up and talked about it, so we went along and agreed.
Afterwards, as the issue gained attention, and the Heavenly Court found out, the Jade Emperor very much appreciated this decision. Hence, it became a universally celebrated day..."
Hearing this, Qin Shou was speechless. He had originally thought it was the Jade Emperor’s benevolence, but now it seemed it was nothing more than going with the flow. Fairy tales are deceiving, and he concluded it’d be better to believe in them less from now on...
When Zhong Kui mentioned this, Qin Shou suddenly thought of a question and asked, "You said the seventh month and a half is when the negative energy is heaviest. You’re not suggesting to me that the Nether River Patriarch opens the blood pool exactly at that time for those soldier spirits to go for reincarnation, are you?"
Zhong Kui chuckled, and Qin Shou, catching a glimpse, instantly understood—he had guessed correctly!
Qin Shou sighed and said, "Isn’t there half a month left? Give me some time to think..."
Zhong Kui didn’t rush him but nodded, gesturing for Qin Shou to take his time thinking. He then went off to fuss over his beard...
After leaving the Punishing Division, Qin Shou’s mind was a battlefield. According to his nature, he would absolutely not risk it; but when he thought of those old soldiers, he could hardly bear it.
Zhong Kui had left some things unsaid, but even without those words, Qin Shou could guess what an Asura was, right? To put it nicely, an Asura could be called the ultimate warrior! To put it crudely, it was nothing but the Nether River Patriarch’s personal humanoid weapon!
It was just like throwing a living person into a furnace to forge a weapon; once transformed into an Asura, they essentially lose their sense of self completely.
"Being a humanoid weapon for a while isn’t too bad... anyway, once dead, you still have to come out and be reborn," Qin Shou muttered to himself.
At that moment, a group of people approached him head-on.
It was none other than Black and White Impermanence, Li Zhenying, Lady Diyong, and the oaf Kui San, as well as the bronze dragon he was dragging along.
Upon seeing Qin Shou, the group immediately came over.
Black and White Impermanence greeted Yishui courteously, but Yishui, completely oblivious, didn’t even look at them, leaving them both looking rather awkward. However, they were clearly used to it and didn’t mind.
Li Zhenying had a gentle demeanor, yet for some reason, she turned incredibly cold when she saw Yishui.
Although Yishui was inarticulate, she wasn’t stupid; seeing Li Zhenying’s coldness, she simply decided to ignore her as well.
And so, the two young girls stood there staring at each other with bulging cheeks, both turning their eyes to Qin Shou.
Feeling his scalp tingle from the girls’ stares, Qin Shou’s eyes darted around and locked onto a figure sprinting away in the distance. He shouted, "Old Wang! Don’t go! It’s me!"
Then Qin Shou took off running, meanwhile calling out, "Kui San, keep an eye on them for me, wait here! I’ll be right back."
Upon hearing this, Kui San nodded vigorously, "Mhm! Okay!"
Almost in unison, Yishui and Li Zhenying started to chase after him, but Kui San spread his arms to block them, saying with a dopey look, "Rabbit said to wait here for him."
"Idiot, he’s running away!" Li Zhenying and Yishui cried out in unison.
Kui San looked back, then shook his head firmly, "Mhm, he ran. But you can’t run; he told me to watch you."
Left speechless, the two girls didn’t know what to say to the oaf.
With this delay, Qin Shou had already dashed out of Fengdu City, nowhere to be seen.
Feeling helpless, the two girls had no choice but to give up the chase.
Li Zhenying puffed her cheeks and said, "Sister, Kui San, back to the hotel!"
Not to be outdone, Yishui also called out, "Hei, Bai, let’s go home!"
