Chapter 142: Escaping! The Terrifying Desmond!
"But sister, you know that the Elven Tree is dying. If all three of us use it to teleport, it could potentially be destroyed," he said, then glanced at Kranos with a look of regret. "I think we should leave him behind."
Kathryn immediately frowned, while Kranos’s expression shifted drastically. Leave him behind? What kind of idea was that? A cold killing intent flashed through his eyes for a brief moment.
He turned to look at Kathryn, waiting for her decision. At the same time, he was prepared. If they truly intended to abandon him, then the moment she activated the teleportation portal, he would freeze Kevin in time and use the chaos to escape.
Just then, Kathryn’s voice rang out clearly.
"Brother, what kind of suggestion is that? If I hadn’t brought Kranos here, none of this would have happened. It’s my responsibility to protect him," she said, then threw Kranos an apologetic glance.
"I’m sorry for my brother’s words. Don’t worry. All three of us will leave safely," she continued with a gentle tone. Then, turning her attention to the green portal shimmering ahead, her expression shifted again into something more playful.
At that moment, Kevin’s voice echoed in her mind.
Excellent acting, sister. As expected of you. Toying with his emotions like this is truly delightful.
Kathryn’s grin deepened as she heard Kranos speak from behind her.
"Thanks," Kranos said, his emotions returning to their prior calm. He studied Kathryn, who was now muttering incantations at the portal, then sank into deep thought. Dozens of simulations began playing out in his mind as his time points decreased rapidly.
A few minutes passed as he remained lost in calculation. Then Kathryn’s voice came from ahead.
"The portal is open. Let’s head in."
As soon as she spoke, she appeared in front of Kranos, helped him up gently, and brought him to the portal. Without hesitation, the two of them entered.
Kevin followed right behind her.
None of them noticed the faint shadow that crept up behind them and slithered through the portal as well. Within the mind of the hidden figure, thoughts moved rapidly.
So, Kranos, you’re still alive. This is perfect. It’s just like killing two birds with one stone. Who would have thought I’d be able to gain rewards from the Heavenly Dao and uncover Kranos’s secrets at the same time?
It feels as though I’m one of those beings Master always spoke about. What were their names again?
Ah, that’s right.
Sons of Heaven.
Haha
He chuckled silently.
...
After what felt like a long passage through twisting spatial currents, Kranos and the others appeared in a dense forest. Kranos took a moment to regain his balance, still dizzy from the transition. During that time, Kathryn placed him beside a massive tree and began observing their surroundings carefully.
It seems we’re back in the Immortal World. That’s better. It’s much closer to the Divine Soul Treasure, Kathryn thought with a faint smile.
Just then, Kevin’s voice rang out in her mind. His tone was unsure.
Sister, why don’t we just use the starship and jump to another immortal world? With your ship, we don’t need to hide like this. We could go anywhere and lay low for a while.
The starship only has one more teleportation remaining. I want us to use that to retrieve the Soul Treasure and turn Kranos into my puppet. Besides, there are materials nearby that can be used to repair the ship. From there, we can travel across the stars, Kathryn responded.
However, in truth, there were still two teleportations left on the starship. She was honest about the first part, but she withheld the second charge for herself as a personal escape measure if anything went wrong.
"What now?" Kranos asked from where he lay resting under the tree, looking up at her.
"Now?" Kathryn responded. "We find somewhere safe to rest. We need to lay low and wait until the right time to go after the treasure and finish healing you."
"I see. So where do we start? Or do you know any safe place nearby?" he asked with a raised brow.
"We can only search carefully. I can already sense the auras of fierce beasts and demons in the area," she said, glancing around the thick underbrush.
With that, the trio began to move together, heading cautiously through the forest.
...
Just as they searched for a shelter, none of them noticed the abnormal shift in the shadow of a nearby tree. That shadow stretched unnaturally, flickered once, and a figure within it whispered to himself.
"Good thing I asked Master for this Transmission Jade."
The Transmission Jade, used by the Scarlet Moon Organization, allowed long-distance transmission of thoughts through mana-infused waves. It was one of their most reliable information tools.
The spy allowed wisps of his mana to enter the jade and immediately transmitted Kranos and Kathryn’s location to the black-masked men, who were still locked in a high-stakes battle with Rodrick.
Upon receiving the intelligence, the masked men acted without hesitation. They forwarded the information to all assassins below the God Realm. They couldn’t afford for Rodrick to notice any drastic drop in the auras of those onboard. That would alert him to the deception, and the anomaly might slip away.
Hundreds of assassins were immediately teleported away.
Due to their cultivation level, long-range teleportation was not difficult. Though their landing spots would vary due to spatial nodes and interference, it didn’t matter. Their numbers were enough to capture Kathryn swiftly.
Desmond received the feedback and smiled faintly before merging deeper into the shadows.
He decided to wait for at least a hundred assassins to arrive before making a move. He still remembered the last time he underestimated Kathryn’s terrifying power, and he had no intention of dying again out of carelessness.
Camouflaged within the shadows, he stalked the trio who remained unaware of the threat tailing them.
...
Meanwhile, the group continued walking for several hours. Still, they had yet to locate a settlement or even a proper cave to shelter in. Kathryn frowned, trying to determine where they had landed. The environment was unfamiliar, the terrain too vast, and the mana flows in the surrounding space were too scattered.
Just then, none of them noticed the subtle shift in the atmosphere.
From the darkness of the trees, a black shadow lunged straight at Kranos.
His eyes widened in shock, and all he could see was a massive claw racing toward his face with terrifying speed.
