Chapter 131: Chapter 131: The Treasure Snatching Gourd
After binding the Red Eagle, the Devouring God Tree returned to calmness, its branches hanging low, presenting a picturesque scene brimming with vitality.
If one did not look at the Cultivators hanging upside down like fruits, they would not notice the lurking dangers beneath this seemingly peaceful landscape.
"Yun Yi, is there a way to directly approach that gourd?" Even as he watched Red Eagle powerless against the Devouring God Tree’s assault, Mu Can still wanted to snatch the bottle containing the Life Divine Water.
"If it were me, I’m confident I could. For you, it would be very difficult." Purple Cloud shook her head, not afraid to dent Mu Can’s confidence.
Mu Can’s thick-skinned nature wasn’t harmed by Purple Cloud’s words. After all, he couldn’t beat Purple Cloud right now, so he thought, let her say whatever she wants.
"Devouring God Tree." Mu Can muttered, continuously pondering what weakness this type of tree could have. If it had no weaknesses, wouldn’t such a tree be invincible? Mu Can refused to believe that the Great Power who created the Death Space would place such an unbeatable being within it.
"I got it!" Mu Can suddenly thought of something he was good at. Even if the Devouring God Tree were incredibly strong, at the end of the day, it was still just a tree. And if it’s a tree, then it must surely fear fire.
"What?" Purple Cloud asked with a puzzled look, not understanding why Mu Can suddenly appeared so excited.
Mu Can grabbed Purple Cloud’s hand, "I’ve figured out the Devouring God Tree’s weakness!"
"What weakness?"
"Since it’s a tree, it must naturally fear fire." Mu Can said excitedly, as he was still quite skilled at controlling flames.
Despite Mu Can’s excitement, Purple Cloud maintained her cool.
"Even if, as you say, the Devouring God Tree fears fire, it surely won’t fear ordinary flames," Purple Cloud shook her head as she spoke.
She always felt that this peculiar tree wasn’t so simple. If it merely feared ordinary flames, it probably wouldn’t have been deliberately planted here.
This Death Maze is fraught with danger. Red Eagle was a formidable being capable of reaching the top five, but even in this mysterious maze, he had no power to fight back.
"I want to try." Mu Can looked at Purple Cloud with determination, not swayed in the slightest by her words.
In fact, there was something Mu Can hadn’t mentioned. He wanted to obtain the Life Divine Liquid not only for his elders and friends outside but also for Purple Cloud in front of him. Having just reformed her body, Purple Cloud was now in need of Life Energy, and Mu Can was willing to do something for her, even if it meant facing danger.
"Then be careful, I’ll rescue you if there’s trouble." Knowing Mu Can’s temperament and that persuading him was futile, Purple Cloud stopped trying to stop him. Instead, she quietly readied herself, determined to intervene the moment Mu Can faced any peril, even if her soul and body were still not fully merged.
Mu Can gave Purple Cloud a reassuring look, then turned and leaped out of the opened door.
Like a graceful little cat, Mu Can touched down on the ground without making a sound, silently approaching the Devouring God Tree.
Despite moving directly toward it, Mu Can’s guard was up, vigilant as ever. Seeing Red Eagle still hanging there with his fate unknown, being anything less than cautious would be a grave underestimation of the Death Maze’s inhabitants.
Slowly inching closer to the Devouring God Tree, Mu Can’s calm exterior belied his true feelings.
Strangely, even as Mu Can approached the gourd filled with Life Divine Liquid, the Devouring God Tree exhibited not the slightest response.
It was as if it had sunk into a deep slumber, the only sign of life being the slight rustling of its hanging branches and leaves.
"Could it be resting because it just devoured Red Eagle?" Mu Can wondered, eyeing the gourd less than ten feet away.
Indeed, Mu Can’s guess wasn’t far from the truth; the Great Power behind the creation of Death Space would never place invincible creatures within the Death Maze. The Devouring God Tree’s most evident weakness was that it would fall into a dormant state while assimilating new prey, a state that would not be interrupted unless faced with extreme provocation.
This was why Mu Can could approach the gourd so effortlessly.
"I’ll risk it." With his coveted prize so close at hand, how could Mu Can resist seizing it?
Casting a glance at Red Eagle hanging nearby, Mu Can gauged the distance.
"If I take the gourd and the Devouring God Tree awakens, I might have just a fraction of a second to react. In that time, I must rescue Red Eagle and return to the previous chamber."
With that thought, Mu Can grabbed the gourd and stored it in the Reincarnation Pearl, then bolted, unfurling his Flame Wings in a flash, soaring straight towards Red Eagle in the air.
"Oh no," Purple Cloud’s face fell upon seeing the wings rise from Mu Can’s back.
This disobedient youngster—if he had just taken the gourd and left, he might not have enraged the Devouring God Tree. But igniting fire near a tree with its own intellect, even one asleep, was sure to awaken it.
Before Mu Can could even touch the branch holding Red Eagle, a gust of wind assaulted him from behind. Turning his head, a branch narrowly missed his face, shooting past and leaving him in cold sweat.
With no time for thought amidst the urgency, he swung his Immortal Level Longsword, severing the branch that held Red Eagle and caught it, not looking back as he flew toward Purple Cloud.
The awakened Devouring God Tree, realizing its freshly captured prey was being stolen, not to mention its painstakingly gathered Divine Liquid by Mu Can, flew into a rage.
Anger made the Devouring God Tree lose its senses, its branches flailing wildly in the air. Previously, it had deployed a mere hundred or so branches to capture Red Eagle, but now, all branches on the Devouring God Tree swung violently, homing in on Mu Can’s location, showering down attacks like rain.
Mu Can felt as if he had angered a millennia-old demon. With no chance to look back, he pushed his Flame Wings to the limit, leaving faint afterimages in the air as he narrowly evaded the Devouring God Tree’s attacks. But suddenly, he found a massive branch blocking his only path back—the same move used against Red Eagle.
"This is trouble." Even with Mu Can’s considerable increase in strength, he was no match for such a bizarre tree.
Stopping in his tracks, he suddenly saw a towering inferno erupting on the tree trunk ahead, revealing an entrance.
"Sister Yun," it turned out Purple Cloud had activated her Dan Fire.
The appearance of the True Dragon Heavenly Fire unleashed by Purple Cloud burned a massive hole through the Devouring God Tree’s branch.
"What are you waiting for? Hurry over," Purple Cloud hastily admonished upon seeing Mu Can still in shock.
