Chapter 830: Chapter 830: What’s the Deal with That Girl?
"No," Nan Feng smiled. "This hairpin is very important to me. I can’t give it to you. If you can’t make change, then I will have to find another place to stay."
"But within dozens of miles here..."
Nan Feng pocketed the banknote and was about to leave without another word when that same man stood up, "Hey, Lady, it doesn’t matter if you don’t have silver. You can stay with us brothers; we won’t charge you for the room."
Nan Feng couldn’t be bothered with them and continued on her way.
However, the innkeeper said, "Let it go, let it go. Just stay for now. We can talk about the silver tomorrow. It’s getting dark, and it’s very easy for a young lady like you to encounter danger. I’ll just make a friend, and next time you can repay me when you stop by."
After some thought, Nan Feng realized she had no other choice.
...
When the innkeeper brought the dishes, Nan Feng also took out the silver needle the Emperor had given her. This needle could test for poison or whether there was any substance like a knockout drug. If there was poison, the needle would produce smoke; if there was a knockout drug, the needle would turn white.
After checking, everything was fine.
Nan Feng then dug into her meal. This was the worst inn she had stayed in, and the innkeeper was the worst cook she’d encountered. Not only was the food unappetizing, but he had also skimped on the salt, and without enough salt, the fishy taste became very noticeable.
Speaking of the fish, it might have been made with dead ones, as it certainly wasn’t fresh.
But when traveling, since it was provided out of kindness, Nan Feng felt she shouldn’t be too picky and ended up eating all the food that was served.
The blankets at the inn were also unbearable for Nan Feng; they had a damp smell and it was apparent they hadn’t been washed in quite some time. Nan Feng could only take off her own cloak to use as a makeshift blanket and just tolerate the covering for the time being.
About the group of men downstairs, being a woman traveling alone, she had to be extra cautious. So she secured the windows tightly. After some thought, she still wasn’t reassured, so she tied all the windows and the door shut. That way, if someone attempted to push the door, she would be immediately alerted.
Additionally, before sleeping, she tied her clothes over her nose as a makeshift mask, in case those men decided to use a knockout drug.
After taking these precautions, she fell asleep. Besides not breathing comfortably, everything else was fine.
After Nan Feng fell asleep, the group of men downstairs hadn’t returned to their rooms but continued cracking peanuts and seeds. Later, when they saw the innkeeper coming down, the leading man asked, "Grandson, what’s the deal with that little chick who just went upstairs?"
The innkeeper shook his head, "Who knows? A girl her age traveling alone, there are usually two reasons: either she’s running away from a marriage, or she’s meeting a lover."
"She must be from a rich family, huh? Carrying banknotes and traveling alone."
The innkeeper added, "Why bother with so many others’ affairs? Have you all eaten your fill? If so, start cleaning up the bowls."
"Us, clean? You’re joking, right? You’re in business, and I’ve paid you. And now you want us to wash dishes? Is there no justice?"
"How am I supposed to wash dishes for thirty or forty of you by myself? When will I finish?" The innkeeper seemed quite innocent.
"What does that have to do with us? It’s your fault for not hiring help."
The innkeeper was utterly speechless, "Fine, you won’t wash them? Then, no breakfast for you tomorrow."
The group of men looked at each other. They hadn’t brought any provisions, and without breakfast, they would likely starve until they got to the next stop. After weighing their options, they had no choice but to help the innkeeper with the dishes.
And the innkeeper kept complaining, "Be careful, don’t break the dishes!"
...
When Nan Feng awoke, it was already daylight.
And the first thought upon waking was that it was time to leave in search of Wild Brother.
