Chapter 829: Chapter 829: The Unscrupulous Inn (2)
"Is the Inn full? If it is, I can go to another place to eat," Nan Feng was about to leave.
"Wait a moment, Lady," the waiter stopped Nan Feng, "Our Inn is the only one within hundreds of miles, and night is upon us. There could be wild animals at the foot of the mountain. You’d better stay here for the night and leave tomorrow. If you dislike that there are no seats available downstairs, I can cook the dishes and bring them up to your room."
"You still have rooms?" Nan Feng asked doubtfully.
This Inn seemed quite small, probably having only five or six rooms at most, but shouldn’t there already be thirty or forty people here for a meal?
"Yes, we have," replied the waiter. "Each group at a table gets one room, and we happen to have one left."
The waiter’s tone was filled with disdain for the men sitting there, which was why he seemed particularly welcoming to Nan Feng.
His words were overheard by a man at a nearby table, who suddenly became angry. "Hey waiter, what are you saying? Do you think we’re not spending money? Doesn’t this full table of dishes cost anything? Besides, the weather is getting cold now, what’s wrong with ten of us squeezing into one room?"
This waiter seemed quite principled, completely disdainful of engaging with these people, and only said to Nan Feng, "Lady, what would you like to eat?"
Nan Feng remained highly vigilant, feeling that neither the other guests nor the waiter seemed decent.
"What do you have to eat?" Nan Feng asked.
"We have home cooking, meat dishes including hunted game, fish, and chicken, as well as seasonal vegetables."
"One Braised Fish, a plate of greens, and a bowl of rice," Nan Feng ordered.
"Right, Lady, please pay a deposit first," said the waiter.
"A deposit? Don’t I settle the bill when checking out tomorrow?" Nan Feng asked.
"Lady, it’s the rule of the inn, to prevent some people from eating without paying," the waiter said while glancing at those nearby people.
It was the same man from before, "Hey, why are you looking at me again? Didn’t I just give you the deposit? Keep looking and I might punch you!"
The waiter retorted, "Thirty-something people eating and paying only one tael of silver, what kind of deposit is that?"
"Oh come on, you think one tael of silver is too little? Fine, come here, ’grandpa’ will add more for you right now!" the man gestured to the waiter.
The waiter was not afraid and went straight over.
After fumbling around in his bosom for a while, the man finally pulled out two lumps of silver and slammed them down in front of the waiter, "Here you go!"
The waiter reached out to take it, but the man covered it and said, "Call me ’grandpa’ and I’ll give it to you."
"Grandpa," the waiter called out immediately, so promptly that the man was taken aback, "That quick? Kid, if you call me ’grandpa,’ does that make you my grandson?"
The people nearby started to jeer.
The waiter swiftly picked up the two lumps of silver from the table, "I really don’t see what’s so great about being a grandpa, dying decades before a grandson."
"..." The man became angry, "Hey, kid!"
The waiter didn’t bother with him and looked back to Nan Feng, "Lady, your deposit, please."
Nan Feng took out a silver note and placed it on the counter, "I’ll put down a thousand taels of silver note as a deposit, and you can give me change when I check out tomorrow."
The waiter was immediately troubled, "Lady, let it be, you know my small Inn is situated in a wild area, where would I get the money to give you change?"
"How should we proceed? This is all I have, I don’t have any small change," said Nan Feng.
The waiter was still troubled, "I really don’t have any small change in the inn to give you. How about you give me that white jade hairpin in your hair? It’s worth at most two taels of silver, which is enough to cover food and lodging."
